The people of Swindon: do they regret voting for Brexit?

With the closure of Honda - closing their Swindon plant, with the loss of 3,500 jobs, which the firm has attributed to Brexit, I wonder if the people of Swindon are having regrets since they were from the leave camp.

Reminds me of those who voted for Trump knowing his policies were targeted at them but felt they somehow were exempt. Like the Mexican man and his US wife voting for Trump then crying on the news he had been deported/couldn't get back in when he was out of the country.

I'm finding it really difficult sympathising with those who voted to leave by not looking at their own circumstances, but rather, other people. Majority of the people I have heard from who voted leave (from fb, and so on) they only cared about immigration. They thought leaving meant a 'clear up' taking hardly into account their own future and that of their children.

I'm sorry to the people in Swindon, but they did it to themselves.

And before people say "there wasn't enough information" there was enough to determine that we did not know what the 'deal' was.

I can't link article for Honda but it's everywhere on news sites.

PlainSpeakingStraightTalking I took the info from the Honda in the UK manufacturing website.

Honda of the UK Manufacturing is a highly flexible production facility with the capacity to build a range of products. Our engine plant has two assembly lines. The petrol line produces the 1L and 1.5L VTEC turbo engines for the tenth generation Civic, whilst our Diesel line produces two 1.6L i-DTEC engines, a mid-power and a high-power variant.

Not all people who voted for Brexit hate immigrants. Huge generalisations being made.

StoneofDestiny · 18/02/2019 19:37

And it's only just started............so many EU grants that support cultural, art and environmental projects will get pulled soon .......

greendale17 · 18/02/2019 19:38

@MadgeMidgerson

Bore off with your pity party. Thousands of people will losing their jobs but you don’t care about that

MadgeMidgerson · 18/02/2019 19:38

I don’t care what feels unpleasant to people in Swindon

if you are a migrant it has felt more than unpleasant these last two plus years

deal with it

NCjustforthisthread · 18/02/2019 19:39

I know people in Swindon who voted to leave but do not regret their vote, even after today’s news. They didn’t vote because they hate foreigners btw - they voted for other reasons.

PolarBearDisguisedAsAPenguin · 18/02/2019 19:39

45.3% of Swindon voters wanted to remain in the EU. what about the 28% of registered Brits who did not bother to vote at all? Or the numbers that didn’t even bother to register, let alone vote? Why are you pointing the blame at the 54% or people in Swindon who registered and voted to leave?

You voted for this, @greendale17

Maybe you will be able to buy groceries and pay the mortgage with your xenophobia!

well, you’ll certainly find out!

MrsSchadenfreude · 18/02/2019 19:40

Yes, and if anything goes wrong with Brexit, it will be the fault of the EU...

MadgeMidgerson · 18/02/2019 19:40

you’re getting what you wanted, enjoy it!

sunlit uplands, here you come!

GhostofFrankGrimes · 18/02/2019 19:41

No but being on the same side of a campaign that gave us the breaking point poster isn't going to help is it?

Kazzyhoward · 18/02/2019 19:41

If they were moving production to an EU country, then yes, perhaps Brexit related. But they're not. So how can it be Brexit?

PolarBearDisguisedAsAPenguin · 18/02/2019 19:41

I’ve spent the last two years in every gathering with Brits wondering which of you hate my guts for being a migrant and wish me ill, people I work with. Statistically, there are certainly some.

Forgive me if I couldn’t give a shiny shit if 54% of Swindon or 54% of those who came out to vote chose leave. You can all suffer as far as I am concerned

my well of empathy is dry

Maybe it’s your personality that people don’t like Madge and it has nothing to do with you being a migrant?

Chloemol · 18/02/2019 19:41

It’s nothing to do with Brexit, although the bbc would have you believe it is, two words. Project Fear. No one said leaving would be easy, and it will be tough but having seen the true behaviour if the eu bosses would you really want to stay, I would be happy with a common market, which is what we originally signed up for but not for anything else. And let’s not forget they brought this on themselves. David Cameron asked for some concessions, they said piss off so we did,

ColourMeStoked · 18/02/2019 19:42

I feel sorry for those who work at this plant and voted remain...

Tanith · 18/02/2019 19:42

Dear me, Madge - you’re beginning to sound just like a Brexit bot with your “Deal with it!” polarisation.

TearingUpMyHeart · 18/02/2019 19:43

The good thing about being stupid is that you don't notice cause/effect ... so the brexit voting masses of Swindon will be happily unaware they voted for their own unemployment

W0rriedMum · 18/02/2019 19:43

List of Brexiteers now leaving the UK

  • Sir Jim Radcliffe (UK's richest man) is moving to Monaco
  • Dyson is moving his business to Singapore
  • Jacob Rees-Mogg has moved funds business to Ireland
  • Farage's children have German passports
  • Nigel Lawson lives in France and has or is applying for residency.

Why can't people wake up and see that this "make Britain great" gig that they've been sold is nonsense.

MadgeMidgerson · 18/02/2019 19:43

they are getting what they wanted. they were told, and they didn’t care.

hey ho

TaimaandRanyasBestFriend · 18/02/2019 19:46

They'll say it's nothing to do with Brexit and then blow up when they can't get another job and wind up on UC but the dumb arses will still vote Tory.

SardineJam · 18/02/2019 19:46

I think if people actually understood the impact of leave then maybe the result would have been different Madge, but this isn't what happened and not Swindon's fault...

MadgeMidgerson · 18/02/2019 19:47

I guess like all the Americans who misunderstood what trump was selling

Like fuck they did, they heard the dog whistle and thought our ship has come in!

GhostofFrankGrimes · 18/02/2019 19:48

No one said leaving would be easy

Actually they did. Easiest trade deal in human history.

greendale17 · 18/02/2019 19:48

@MadgeMidgerson

I voted remain.

Maybe it’s your personality that people don’t like Madge and it has nothing to do with you being a migrant?

^This. You have an attitude problem.
