I am seriously worried. Politics across the West is an utter mess - thanks Putin, nice work - and I can't see that this will help. It will split the left vote and right-wing ideology will continue stomping its way to more power. We are asterisked all ways from hell to breakfast.

I don’t think she’s allowing it, they’re giving her no choice. She’s their puppet.

ShatnersWig · 20/02/2019 14:31

We raised the nonsense about Hatton the other day.

Glad to see others are backing me up when I said @KateAdiesEarnings was talking bollocks.

I don't always agree with Soubry. I rarely agree 100% with any politician, but she has impressed me with a lot of what she has said over the last few years and the vitriol she has received for saying it has been disgraceful. Interestingly, although her constituency voted Leave, her Tory Association has (up until now) backed her. She's right - her constituents may have voted to Leave but she is there to represent their best interests and if she strongly believes that their best interests are not served by Brexit she is right to speak out as she has. Her letter of resignation absolutely sums up the state of the Tory party at present. ERG is trying to run the show just as Momentum are trying to run Labour.

PostmanPatIsIncompetent · 20/02/2019 14:32

God, wasn't Heidi Allen's speech a breath of fresh air. I've never voted Tory in my life and suspect I never would, but that was refreshing. And for the first time in British politics for ages, actually quite invigorating.

N0rdicStar · 20/02/2019 14:37

That’s what I thought- breath of fresh air.

Had started to just take the status quo as regards politics as a given. Quite shocking re how bad it’s got- the de- selecting thing.ShockA lot of us don’t have a clue re how bad it is behind the scenes. We only see the shit show fed to us from the front.

First time I haven’t felt depressed and resigned when watching the news in ages.

Sanguineclamp · 20/02/2019 14:44

Yes I understand TM is beholden to them in terms of votes Alsohuman but I still don't understand the depth of their influence and how they came to be in this position and the extent of their influence. I believe they are publicly funded and the group also receives monies paid to MPs. However, no one is obliged to state whether they are a member or not (a bit like Opus Dei!). I think that's correct anyway. It'd be grateful for further information though.

HelenaDove · 20/02/2019 14:50

"God, wasn't Heidi Allen's speech a breath of fresh air."

Makes a change from her crocodile tears over UC and food banks i suppose.

KissingInTheRain · 20/02/2019 15:05

The three ex-Tory women MPs’ press conference was very impressive, IMO.

The IQ of the Tiggers doubled when they joined.

BejamNostalgia · 20/02/2019 15:05

TIG have confirmed they are anti-renationalisation, will keep tuition fees and are opposed to a rise in tax for the highest paid.

Just boring same old, same old. Just the same as New Labour and red Tories.

PostmanPatIsIncompetent · 20/02/2019 15:06

Makes a change from her crocodile tears over UC and food banks i suppose

She cited those as part of her reason for leaving the Tories

derxa · 20/02/2019 15:16

Just boring same old, same old. Just the same as New Labour and red Tories Good

Alsohuman · 20/02/2019 15:20

She did, but never let the facts get in the way of a good prejudice.

derxa · 20/02/2019 15:21

Today at PMQs sitting behind Jeremy were Emily Thornberry and Dawn Butler. They're usually very vocal but today they looked utterly defeated.

borntobequiet · 20/02/2019 15:29

longwayoff Bannon is stirring it in Italy. Ed Stourton reporting for R4 From Our Own Correspondent - first 5 min or so

BelleSausage · 20/02/2019 15:31

God, I also long for New Labour.

I would take Red Tories any day if the week over Corbyn’s crap or May’s bumbling.

I suspect that you’ll find the new party fairly middle of the road- like most voters.

I give not a shiny shit about re-nationalisation at this stage. But I would like more money for the NHS and Education and UC scrapped. That would be a fantastic start.

PostmanPatIsIncompetent · 20/02/2019 15:32

TIG have confirmed they are anti-renationalisation, will keep tuition fees and are opposed to a rise in tax for the highest paid.

This surprised me, given they're aren't a party and don't have any policies yet, so I checked.

You rather overstate it.

You're repeating an Owen Jones tweet.

The source he cites is an interview with one of the original 7, who said, on whether the potential 50% top tier tax was a good idea, "it depends on what you do with the revenue and impact on economic growth" So, not what you said.

Even if they did though - seriously, who cares what anyone thinks on tuition fees right now? There are huge issues more important than whether the top rate of tax is up or down a few percentage points: a) Brexit and potential economic catastrophe, b) political extremism and collapse of the party system, and c) whether as a country we plough on with horrendous austerity or start spending proper money on public services again.

But obviously Owen Jones thinks his time is best spent propping up b) and making sod all difference to the other two

PalmTree101 · 20/02/2019 15:35

@derxa Emily Thornberry had a discussion with a pretty articulate constituent on the radio yesterday:

www.theneweuropean.co.uk/top-stories/emily-thornberry-on-lbc-radio-talking-labour-and-brexit-1-5898288

“It’s your duty as the opposition to oppose. It’s your duty as the MP for Islington to stand up for the majority of your constituents who voted Remain, to stand up for them.

“You’re our MP you’re not Jeremy Corbyn’s MP. I voted for you. I voted for Remain as did the majority of your constituents, and what we’re hearing as our MP is you saying ‘we just have to get out because it’s what the people wanted’.

“Well the people wanted a Tory government, we don’t expect you to sit back and do everything the Tories say they’re going to do because the people voted for them, Emily.”

Jsmith99 · 20/02/2019 15:37

If both Owen Jones and Jacob Rees-Mogg oppose the Tiggers, they must be on the correct path.

Skirmisher · 20/02/2019 15:39

I had a peek at Owen Jones timeline today. I suspected he'd be getting himself in a tizz.

ShatnersWig · 20/02/2019 15:46

@BejamNostalgia So you're another one talking bollocks.

Alsohuman · 20/02/2019 15:48

He’s so averse to opinions who disagree with him he’s blocked me on Twitter.

PostmanPatIsIncompetent · 20/02/2019 15:52

He’s so averse to opinions who disagree with him he’s blocked me on Twitter

Badge of honour, surely Grin

I stopped following him ages ago because he was driving me mad, but I like to check in occasionally to see how far into the political meltdown spiral he's gone

ShatnersWig · 20/02/2019 15:53

Owen Jones is an insufferable arsehole.

Skirmisher · 20/02/2019 15:56

Insufferable, pompous, and self righteous.

With an extra sprinkling of pompous.

Alsohuman · 20/02/2019 15:57

I used to like seeing his latest ridiculousness, my mistake was responding.

PostmanPatIsIncompetent · 20/02/2019 16:03

I really want to know what you said now...
