It’s a National Non-Emergency: Trump thread 91

Here we are in February 2019 - Trump has declared a National Emergency to funnel the funds for his border wall, he’s just come off a ridiculous SOTU that contained more lies than not, and he’s just tweeted this:

Donald J. Trump @realDonaldTrump 2h2 hours ago
More
“These guys, the investigators, ought to be in jail. What they have done, working with the Obama intelligence agencies, is simply unprecedented. This is one of the greatest political hoaxes ever perpetrated on the people of this Country, and Mueller is a coverup.” Rush Limbaugh

But here’s a reminder he’s not one of the sharpest tools in the box.

Blue states band together looking to bypass Electoral College
thehill.com/homenews/state-watch/432061-dem-states-move-to-bypass-electoral-college

A plan to circumvent the Electoral College is gaining momentum among blue states after Democrats suffered two crushing defeats in presidential elections over the past two decades.

The plan has been given new impetus after Colorado Gov. Jared Polis (D) said this week that he will sign a bill to have his state become the 12th state along with the District of Columbia to join the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact.

The states making up the compact, which already includes New York, Illinois and all the New England states except for New Hampshire, would commit to awarding their electoral votes to whoever wins the popular vote nationally, regardless of the results in the Electoral College.

Yikes.

Shock

So, this would end up with different parts of the US effectively having different electoral systems contributing to the election to the same national post, ie president? Er... that will be fun.

There was a visiting poster a while back who claimed that people only object to electoral anomalies when it's their guy or gal being disadvantaged by them.

I CBA to say so at the time, but nope, I don't play like that.

I thought the electoral college system was bonkers for a modern democracy when I first learned of it, which must have been during one of the Obama wins. I still think it's bonkers for the modern US (ie with easy travel and telecoms ).

Unlike the UK parliamentary system, US voters directly elect their head of government as an individual – except, oh no, they don't, because of this cutout layer called the electoral college.

But despite criticising it, I'm Shock that the US could end up with a half-way reform which only some states participate in, to a elect to a national post.

New from me: Fox News HAD the story of Trump's hush money payoffs to Stormy Daniels BEFORE the election but killed it because the reporter said she was told, "Good reporting Kiddo, but Rupert Murdoch wants Donald Trump to win. So set it aside." Reporter sued, is bound by an NDA.

A stunning story that is absolutely crucial to UK also. Because you know what else Murdoch wants? Brexit. Or as he put it: "When I go into Downing Street they do what I say. When I go to Brussels they take no notice." @michaelgove in his pocket. @nigel_farage now on the pay roll

Excerpt:

Trump has made the debate a point of pride. He recently boasted to the Times that he’d won it despite being a novice, and despite the “crazy Megyn Kelly question.” Fox, however, may have given Trump a little help. A pair of Fox insiders and a source close to Trump believe that Ailes informed the Trump campaign about Kelly’s question. Two of those sources say that they know of the tipoff from a purported eyewitness. In addition, a former Trump campaign aide says that a Fox contact gave him advance notice of a different debate question, which asked the candidates whether they would support the Republican nominee, regardless of who won. The former aide says that the heads-up was passed on to Trump, who was the only candidate who said that he wouldn’t automatically support the Party’s nominee—a position that burnished his image as an outsider.

PerkingFaintly · 04/03/2019 13:27

Well. That is interesting.

Let's see if much – more – turns up to corroborate that Fox sat on the Trump/Daniels story.

It's certainly how the Murdoch media operate in the UK. I learned an awful lot more from the phone-hacking scandal and Leveson Inquiry than that News of the World's guy hacked phones.

Team Trump Keeps Pushing Deal to Send Nuclear Tech to Saudis
Congress raised ‘grave concerns’ about the Trump administration’s past attempts to send nuclear technology to the Saudis. But Team Trump isn’t done trying.

BTW, re my comments above. The structure of America's electoral system is, obviously, up to Americans.

My thoughts merely those of a startled onlooker.

...would commit to awarding their electoral votes to whoever wins the popular vote nationally, regardless of the results in the Electoral College.

This has me confused. I though that the EC had the final word and could override the popular vote. I guess it's been too many years since my 'civics and government' class!

As far as the 'list of 81....cast a wide net to catch a big fish!!!

cozietoesie · 04/03/2019 19:17

The EC wouldn't though. Wink
