AIBU to think that if our elected representatives can’t decide, the people should have the final say?

After all, that’s partially why we had the Referendum in the first place. At that point, relatively few people had feelings one way or the other about the EU. But we were asked. Now that there’s evidently no consensus in Parliament as to how we should leave the EU, shouldn’t it go back to the people again?

And the crowdfunded has raised over £120 000 in less than 24 hours...

crowdfunder!

AutumnCrow · 17/02/2019 18:57

Yes I think it's a fair point. We should decide.

HazardGhost · 17/02/2019 19:05

OP you are very, very, VERY reasonable.

Gth1234 · 17/02/2019 19:08

YABU

The people HAVE had their say. The problem is that many MPs don't want to deal with it.

Better hope they never have a referendum on the death penalty, because there would be a landslide in favour.

sorry, but this is crazy. Very few people had feelings? The truth is that most people who wanted to leave never thought they would get the opportunity to leave.

ginghambox · 17/02/2019 19:10

We have had a vote and leave won.
Why have you posted this here and not in the BREXIT echochamber.

HazardGhost · 17/02/2019 19:12

www.peoples-vote.uk/march_accessibility

^^Link for those with disabilities to attend....

I do wish they could do a video link for those who are housebound, have screen up with everyone who can't get there.

dragonsfire · 17/02/2019 19:13

Nope - the people decided to leave, the people then voted the party they wanted to lead it.

The people don’t need to vote anymore the people voted need to get their fingers out their arse, work together and do their jobs.

Plus the public will muddy the waters even more - imagine the fact a small pool in government can’t decide, would be worse with the millions in the public.

yolofish · 17/02/2019 19:15

Actually, it's not a case of 'Leave Won, Get over it'. It's more a case of Leave won (by a very small percentage) and now Leave appears to want everyone to jump off the cliff, like lemmings.

OP YABVVVV reasonable. I do believe a People's Vote is the only solution to the current clusterfuck the politicians have put us in.

badlydrawnperson · 17/02/2019 19:18

^This - OP you can get MNHQ to move this to the Brexit area. Please do.

yolofish · 17/02/2019 19:20

Msg to MNHQ: please do NOT move this to the Brexit topic. Not only is it very important, the OP is NBU to ask the question. Get really pissed off with people saying 'take it to Brexit', like it should be in Style&Beauty or something...

twofingerstoEverything · 17/02/2019 19:22

YANBU. All this 'the people voted' stuff is a bit moot considering that two and a half years after that vote, we still don't have a plan. It was a narrow win on something that cannot be implemented without damaging the country. Most of the people who voted didn't give a second thought to Northern Ireland etc in 2016. Now that we have more information it is democratic and right that the people should be allowed to express their opinion based on what they now know.

ginghambox · 17/02/2019 19:24

Oh look it has been posted in the BREXIT section.
www.mumsnet.com/Talk/eu_referendum_2016_/3510056-Put-it-to-the-People-March-23rd-March?pg=1

Trying to be clever by not putting BREXIT in the title.

HazardGhost · 17/02/2019 19:25

Reasons for a vote..

  1. The last one has illegal spending and fuckery
  2. Arron Banks is a knob
  3. Democracy
  4. Nigel Farage is a knob
  5. David Cameron is a knob
  6. There's lots of knobs and they have knobbed everything up
  7. Do the people who want leave want a deal or not? Cos you lot never said with your last vote....could you have not written in the margins explaining what you actually wanted? Leave means leave but do you want to jump out the window to leave, use an actual exit or stand there while Scotty beams you up?
  8. I enjoy making facists annoyed with democracy
  9. I want access to DPs meds
10. And food...I like food.
yolofish · 17/02/2019 19:26

gingham ODFOD. Nothing clever about it, rather just bringing an important topic to the section, and there is nothing unreasonable about the question the OP asked.

GlassOfPort · 17/02/2019 19:27

Why have you posted this here and not in the BREXIT echochamber

I don't know, maybe the OP has posted here because she is interested in the views of those who live outside the echochamber.

Contrary to popular belief, most remainers are interested in reasoned arguments coming from leavers.

What I don't understand is why some leavers are so offended by anyone who questions Brexit and wish this was only discussed in corners of the website they never get to see...

lboogy · 17/02/2019 19:31

Yanbu unreasonable to ask. I was a 'the people voted Brexit, let's get on with it ' person but tbh the way the government and opposition have messed things up, I think a vote should be on :

  1. no deal
  2. current deal

I think that will go a long way towards resolving this clusterfuck

HazardGhost · 17/02/2019 19:33
  1. Cross over day.
twofingerstoEverything · 17/02/2019 19:34

No responsible government should include 'no deal' as a choice in any future vote. It's simply too damaging. Thank goodness, most sensible parliamentarians understand that and are saying so.

borntobequiet · 17/02/2019 19:34

Why would anyone, Leaver or Remainer, not want a say if Parliament can’t make up its mind? Because the way we leave is as important as leaving. I’d prefer we didn’t, but if we do, I don’t want a catastrophe.

OP posts:
SquiddyMcSquidford · 17/02/2019 19:37

@HazardGhost & @borntobequiet you make excellent points.

TheClaifeCrier · 17/02/2019 19:39

Yes we need another vote.

It's all well and good saying that leave won blah blah blah, but the way that we leave was not defined.

In fact, as this video of clips of prominent leave campaigners shows, many, including Nigel Farrage, were advocating for a "soft Brexit", i.e. single market access, before the vote:

Now they've turned into swivel-eyed loons who want us to leave with no deal with only one month to go (because they have investments in disaster capitalist funds).

Voters were lied to. They were misinformed. Now we know better what no deal Vs soft Brexit Vs remain would entail we need to have a say. Especially as parliament is incapable of anything.

HazardGhost · 17/02/2019 19:39

Last March some celebs paid for coaches so keep an eye out if your low on funds but want to go...
