To be mildly irritated by slimming world (kind of lighthearted!!)

I am trying to lose weight. I eat really healthy vegetarian food- homemade soups & stews, veg chilli, stir fry’s, oats & fruit, loads of greens - everything cooked at home from scratch. I eat eggs but no dairy at all- no chocolate etc.

My friend does slimming world and eats absolute shite- like proper beige food- I have never seen her eat anything green- slimming world choc bars for breakfast, cans of fizzy drinks, tons of meat & pasta, tons of sugar.

She has lost 2 stone and I have lost 2lbs Envy WTF!!

Aibu- am sure it’s easy to do slimming world badly and I am sure a lot of people eat really healthily but it does irritate me 😂

You are only seeing a snapshot of her food though. The slimming world way is that you fill a third of your plate with speed food (veg). As for the fizzy drinks, so? Lots of people drink fizzy drinks, on diets or not on diets. That’s not a slimming world thing, you don’t have to drink them Grin

HJWT · 14/02/2019 17:04

Slimming world is really bad because most people don't take the concept of 'half a plate of speed (veg) quarter protein & quarter carbs' but it helps it does make you think about what your eating and 'syns' if you pick up a chocolate bar in the shop, you cant eat it because it would be way over syns.

redandyellowandpinkandgreen99 · 14/02/2019 17:06

She has lost 2 stone (allegedly) in what length of time?

Blackcelebration73 · 14/02/2019 17:08

@red over about 3 months. You can deffo tell but she really does eat absolute shite

redandyellowandpinkandgreen99 · 14/02/2019 17:14

She has lost TWO STONE in 3 months, by eating shite? (Chocolate, carbs, fizzy drinks, meat, tons of sugar.)

Doesn't make sense sorry.

Blackcelebration73 · 14/02/2019 17:16

@red honestly, she has, using slimming world apparently

Did you watch the secret life of slim people the other day? It basically concluded it's all about calories. In theory you could eat 1000 calories of chocolate a day and lose weight (but probably shouldnt) have you worked out how many calories you're actually eating/burning?
I also personally think you feel more satisfies eating what you fancy rather than that what you feel you should so if you fancy a cheese sandwich and a bag of crisps for lunch you'll probably feel more satisfied than eating a salad of the same amount of calories.

PinkiOcelot · 14/02/2019 17:17

Slimming world advocates eating plenty of fresh vegetables and fruit. I’m not doing SW at the minute, but when I was, I was never told to eat shite!

Blackcelebration73 · 14/02/2019 17:20

@pinki I think she just does the bare minimum- I think it’s easy to cheat

The 'chocolate' bars are high fibre bars, so not as bad as they seem calorie wise, but they are very synthetic. yeah, as people say above, SW does work if you stick to the third veg, third carbs and third lean protein, as well as avoiding fat and sugar.

Also, dairy and meat are not the devil diet wise. You do sound quite jealous of your friend, but it's hard to judge unless you see what she's eating for every single meal and snack.

As a PP pointed out too, SW is good for making people realise just how many calories are in some foods. Avocados, nuts and oats are high in calories, but also high in nutrients, vitamins minerals etc so many people think they are a health food.

A calorie is a calorie no matter what way it's dressed!

SynchroSwimmer · 14/02/2019 19:38

I am totally with you on this OP.

I eat really healthily just like you...homemade soups/lots of veg/lean protein, salmon, eggs - adding in 4 miles of swimming plus yoga and walking every week, but never losing weight, in-fact having no energy to complete the fitness, sort of crashing half way through a swim session and just feeling weak doing say 3 hours of exercise on an empty stomach and one healthy meal a day (But still obese).

My body just won’t give up energy/fat in response to heavy exercise.

It seems I wasn’t actually eating enough.

So I am doing a 12 week Slimming World trial, using it as a means of learning and re-educating myself going forwards.

But as part of the plan I feel I am adding in all sorts of things that seem alien and counter intuitive, but are on the SW plan nonetheless (cans of tinned mushy peas) - and it is actually working!

I was alarmed that I was being “pushed” by SW towards lots of foods that I had spent 2 decades removing from my diet: non-natural processed foods, foods with additives, and yes, fizzy drinks, sweetend yogurt and so on.

Basically I am just making a list of good natural foods and healthy meals that I like and researching how they will fit into the plan - or not.

Astonishingly, I just tried a sample in class today where someone “made” the fake Ferrero Rochers (Nutella mixed with crushed Ryvita), I don’t like chocolate, but despite my scepticism, I would say these tasted better than the real thing. How weird.

Happy with weight loss so far and will carry on and see how it goes (in between the all-inclusive hotel visits with the unlimited coconut ice cream and mojito cocktails 😎 )

I’m being kind of light hearted too!

Nomdejeur · 15/02/2019 06:56

It’s about enjoying your food too, if you went on a diet or healthy eating plan that was hard to understand, the food was bland and boring or you had to weigh absolutely everything, you wouldn’t stick to it.
Slimming world have these tweaks so you can enjoy nice things like sweet and sour chicken (diet tango) or bbq pork (diet cola) but these things aren’t the backbone of slimming world.

OwlinaTree · 15/02/2019 07:03

Oh hooray, another thread bashing slimming world. It must be a whole week since the last one.

Hmm
Nomdejeur · 15/02/2019 07:11

owlinatree look on the upside, the more people that don’t go to slimming world, the more amount of fat people there will be, the thinner you will look when standing next to them Grin

OwlinaTree · 15/02/2019 07:16

nom Grin

TimetohittheroadJack · 15/02/2019 07:18

What did your friend eat before starting slimming world? If she’s now eating ‘beige food’ I’d bet her diet previousto SW was heavy on takeaways and junk, and now she’s changed to healthier options she is losing.

There’s not that many ‘beige’ options on slimming world.

Petalflowers · 15/02/2019 07:22

I agree with you. I struggle to loose weight, even though eating healthily.

moanymoaner · 15/02/2019 07:29

Tons of sugar? I can't see how she's losing , SW certainly doesn't encourage any sugar. I've been doing it for 6 weeks and only lost 6 pounds , but that's fine. SW is about control of what you're eating . I eat bad when I don't plan but SW is helping control the amount of rubbish i put in my body. It also encourages 1/3 veg with every meal. Something most don't do. Maybe your friend is only showing you the bad stuff she eats?

Poodloo · 15/02/2019 07:30

I don't see how she can be eating a beige diet on slimming world. Bread would be a healthy extra B (and only certain breads) and otherwise synned. Only allowed 15 syns a day (maybe more for some people)
Slimming world massively encourages plenty of speed food and actually helped me to know how much of each category I should be eating. I actually think the 15 syns is good as it helps people stay on track. If I cut all junk out, I'd fail quicker.

Pippa12 · 15/02/2019 07:32

Tbf she must be doing something right if she’s lost two stone... in the nicest poss way this sounds like sour grapes.

Why don’t you try SW for abit. I loosely follow it, I lost 2.5st after having my son. Yes you can eat mugshots, etc but it’s not the law. Also, you know if you eat shit loads of pasta your not going to have a great loss etc. We eat lots of fruit and veg, every meal from scratch.

The way I see it it’s a change of lifestyle, so there has to be some treats/convenience food because life, at times, needs beige food!!!

Pippa12 · 15/02/2019 07:34

And fwiw I tried loosing weight on my own, I ‘thought’ I was eating healthy, but i wasn’t!!!

Have you tried my fitness pal, that’s an eye opener Grin

RJnomore1 · 15/02/2019 07:35

Look up James smith or Richie howey on slimming world, very informative

Poodloo · 15/02/2019 07:36

Also she won't be eating loads of sugar... 1 syn is about 20 cals..So Unless she's using up her whole 15 cals on sugar then I think you are wrong!

Sunnysidegold · 15/02/2019 07:36

I've lost 2 stone ish with slimming world. I am.eating loads more fruit and veg and have definitely decreased the amount of processed food I eat. But on Facebook pages and blogs I see loads of people posting pictures of the aforementioned beige food. I think maybe these are the fakeaways they use and while i don't make many of those to guess they help people who maybe existed on takeaways.

Hazlenutpie · 15/02/2019 07:49

I didn’t like SW. We have lost weight by reducing portion size, using smaller plates and cutting out all naughty snacks.
