To be mildly irritated by slimming world (kind of lighthearted!!)

I am trying to lose weight. I eat really healthy vegetarian food- homemade soups & stews, veg chilli, stir fry’s, oats & fruit, loads of greens - everything cooked at home from scratch. I eat eggs but no dairy at all- no chocolate etc.

My friend does slimming world and eats absolute shite- like proper beige food- I have never seen her eat anything green- slimming world choc bars for breakfast, cans of fizzy drinks, tons of meat & pasta, tons of sugar.

She has lost 2 stone and I have lost 2lbs Envy WTF!!

Aibu- am sure it’s easy to do slimming world badly and I am sure a lot of people eat really healthily but it does irritate me 😂

Ultimately

Calories in VS calories out . Simple

If you can eat at calorie deficit , eating junk food , you will lose weight

In the hierarchy of importance calories are above macro nutrients ...

Flowerfae · 15/02/2019 08:05

I can't lose weight on slimming world, tried 6 times over the years and I lose a bit , like half a stone then it starts coming back on again without me changing back from the plan, I kept going until I'd gained the half stone back, just incase it it would start coming off again. I do a lot better with low carb, The Dukan Diet is working better for me. A friend of mine is trying to get me to come back to SW because she doesn't think The Dukan Diet is a good way to lose weight, I know SW won't work for me, I follow people on instagram though who it's worked brilliantly for, and I know someone who has been going to SW for five years and lost naff all and just goes to socialise. I think different diets suit different people.

Orchiddingme · 15/02/2019 08:06

This isn't an either/or situation.

You could carry on eating your nutritious food but get an app like MyFitnessPal or another calorie counter and find out how much you are really eating, calorie-wise, it may be far too much (two bowls of pasta as opposed to one) or too little and then the weight clings.

Your friend is (you say) eating beige food and losing weight- but weight isn't the only determinant of health. There was a study just the other day that showed that eating processed food increases early mortality. So I wouldn't go down that route just to lose weight, as you could lose weight eating your type of food if you knew what the calories were.

I'd keep eating what you eat- sounds delicious, but calorie count for a week just so you can see what you'd have to do to actually lose weight rather than maintain (and maintaining is good as well, not getting bigger!)

pelirocco123 · 15/02/2019 08:11

losing weight insn't about eating healthy foods versus eating crap , At the end of the day it's about how much you eat , calories in versus energy used .

LagunaBubbles · 15/02/2019 08:15

You actually sound really judgemental and jealous. Fact is if she has lost 2 stone then she has been in calorie deficit, eating less calories than her body is using. It's not rocket science. So not sure why you say you think she is "cheating". She is losing weight and that's great. People like all sorts of different things, nothing wrong with meat just because you don't eat it so not sure why you call her diet biege either.

HeresMe · 15/02/2019 08:16

You say you are eating fruit, how much,? You can put weight on of eating fruit.

You say site foods what does that even mean chicken, califlower are beige and good for you

losing weight is calories in Vs calories out basically and slimming world is a variation on this.

You may be underestimating what you are putting in, it may all be healthy but if you are eating too much you won't lose weight.

coffeeforone · 15/02/2019 08:17

She probably eats more protein than you do which fills you up for longer, so needs to eat less calories overall - hence more weight loss.

I'd try to up your protein intake.

Cornishclio · 15/02/2019 08:22

I have never done slimming world but if what you say is correct then that sounds strange. I have been on calorie controlled balanced diet for 10 days (1400 calories a day) and lost 4lb. If you have only lost 2lb something doesn't add up. I am a meat eater though so aim to keep protein, carbs, fats etc balanced and sugar and salt low. Do you do portion control?

swingofthings · 15/02/2019 08:24

So many factors comes into it. For a start, what were your respective weight to start with. If she was 20 stones and you 10, then you'd expected to lose more in the same time period. Then there is the totsly number calories. Despite what many say, you can it too much of the good thing. Take peas and lentils for instance, very healthy, but about 80 calories for 100g, so if you decide to have a big plate of it, that could end up being over 300 calories, which would be more than a big protein bar.

Then there's the level of exercise and let's not forget age! I could lose 1/2 a stone in 2 weeks in my 20s, in my late 40s, it takes me about 2 months if not more!

Cornishclio · 15/02/2019 08:33

Also has someone else said fruit is actually really high in sugar albeit natural sugars. Rice pasta bread and potatoes need to be measured as eating too much of that will put on weight even if you are having with vegetables. Not sure about oats but I guess you should watch that too. As others have said protein keeps you fuller for longer so meat, eggs, cheese, fish make up around one third of my plate. Could also be down to exercise if your friend is very active. Personally I am keeping off anything sugary but am miffed have come down with a cold in spite of eating healthily.

Acrasia · 15/02/2019 08:56

The thing is, cheating on a diet means you are cheating yourself out of weight loss, not that you can miraculously eat the same load of shite you were eating to gain the weight, but somehow now miraculously lose it. She is not doing SW correctly, that is true, but she is probably eating fewer calories than she uses in a day.

Everything is relative, does she have a lot more weight to lose than you do? If so she will be able to eat significantly more than you and still lose weight, but that will change as she gets closer to your weight.

Have you just changed to eating less processed foods or are you calorie counting too?

I know this is lighthearted, but it is good to remember that “comparison is the thief of joy”, you cannot change the fact that she has lost more than you, but don’t let it derail your own efforts.

BarbaraofSevillle · 15/02/2019 09:00

For a start, what you have described is not Slimming World, unless she eats nothing but fruit and non starchy veg for dinner.

The cans of drink must be diet, but even that's not really SW, because they say you should mostly drink plain water.

I'm constantly astonished about the never ending stream of people who discount all the good stuff about SW (unlimited fruit and veg, lean meat, fish, eggs and pulses, and limited amounts of bread and crap like crisps, chocolate and alcohol) and use the couple of slight anomalies, ie that some processed food such as diet yogurts are 'allowed' whereas you'd have to take an avocado as part of your high calorie allowance as evidence that it's a shit diet and people who follow it exist on beige and sweetners.

But she's losing weight and you're not, so her calorie deficit must be much greater than yours. Whatever eating plan you follow, there needs to be a calorie deficit, which means eating less and moving more. SW, is just one way of guaranteeing a calorie deficit, with the added advantage of not having to count/weigh/measure most food, and there always being something to eat if you're hungry, ie not possible to run out of calories/points for the day.

Nomdejeur · 15/02/2019 12:22

Somebody mentioned looking up James Smith and Richie Howies views on Slimming world and to be fair, they have their own agenda and I often wonder why they are so obsessed with the S/W diet. Maybe it’s because it’s the biggest opposition to their diet plans? Just because they shout loudest and use some sweary words doesn’t mean they are right. Slimming world never put other groups down, because they don’t have to.

ShadyLady53 · 15/02/2019 13:07

I lost weight on Slimming World then gained it all plus another stone without eating especially badly. I was eating 1200 a day for years and steadily gained weight and developed anaemia and sub-clinical hypothyroidism because of the low calories. I also developed terrible IBS. Never had these problems prior to Slimming World. Since reading more of the science I totally understand how it fucked up my metabolism and bowels.

Save money and lose weight for good by joining Team RH fitness. It’s infinitely better and science based than SW and has great results.

MrsPinkCock · 15/02/2019 13:56

@ShadyLady53 I agree. Team RH Fitness at least teaches you about nutrition and how your body works, unlike SW and WW.

I did WW 12 years ago for 2 years and lost several stone. However, when I put my calorie intake into my fitness pal when it came out I was only eating 900 cals a day so it’s no bloody wonder.

Also did SW 5 years ago to shift a stone Id gained back - which worked because I didn’t take the piss and monitored calorie intake. At the time I was keeping it under 1,200 a day Hmm but people who struggle to lose weight on SW don’t seem to grasp the very basic concept that they are over eating! It doesn’t matter how healthily you eat, if you’re not eating the right amount of calories then the weight won’t shift.

FWIW I’m now eating 1,900 cals a day and losing 1-1.5lb a week because I exercise. And that includes me having chocolate, crisps, cake, ice cream, wine, cheese, cream, etc in moderation.

Meralia · 15/02/2019 14:07

I’ve recently lost a few stone with slimming world. There really is nothing wrong with eating pasta and meat.

Not all diets have to be chia seeds, avocados, plant based meals or protein shakes.

I love meat and carbs, so I eat them until I’m full. It’s worked well for me so far, people always say how slimming world doesn’t teach portion control and how you can theoretically eat 500 bowls of pasta and it’s still a free food etc... but it’s about being sensible isn’t it? It’s not rocket science. You eat until you’re comfortably full (not stuff yourself stupid till you can’t move). I can tell when I’m full and I know what size portion to give myself so I don’t waste food or stuff myself.

The food is healthy. Meat, carbs, veg, fruit are healthy food. I even have the odd mullerlight now and again (another controversial topic). And I eat their hi fi bars too.

ghostyslovesheets · 15/02/2019 14:20

Oh nice to see some other team RH people !

Been doing it for just over a week - eating way more calories than I was, much better food - and slowly changing weight and shape - it finally clicked into place the difference between 'dieting' and eating well!

FooFighter99 · 15/02/2019 14:29

If your friend is doing SlimmingWorld she is not eating "tons of sugar"

I've been doing it since August and have lost 2.5 stone (and i've fannied around loads cos i'm shit!!)

Don't slate something you dont understand, instead why not join and see if it can work for you...

PlainSpeakingStraightTalking · 15/02/2019 14:31

Why are people so so obsessed with Slimming World ? It isnt a diet, it is a lifestyle change. I really dont understand the bitchathon.

I lost 6 stone in a year. I pretty much ate the same thing every day because I'm boring like that -

Breakfast - 'over night oats' - 40g rolled oats, 1 fat free yogurt and as much fruit as I could fit in the jar

Elevenses - grapes and tangerines

Salad - 1/2 bag of microwave rice, as much peppers, onions, cucumber, celery, fat free dressing, possibly 50g low fat cheese.

Mid afternooneses - banana

Tea - rarely deviated from strifry with beef, prawns, pepper, bean sprouts, spinach, onions, mushrooms

Once a week breakfast of over night oats is swapped foscrambled eggs and one slice of brown toast

Im failing to see whats 'beige' about that? Not a Freddo or a muller light to be seen, no refined sugar, no fat, limited carbs, no processed.

I do not compromise on milk.

But the key thing is keeping active, thats what keeps you trim

Dixiechickonhols · 15/02/2019 14:36

Why don’t you join with your friend, they have an offer on to bring a friend for free and give it a try.
What you eat would easily fit into slimming world. It will be just a few tweaks needed eg maybe you are having too much oil or bread.
On several You basically eat protein and fruit/veg with 2 healthy A choices for calcium (lots of non dairy listed) and 1 healthy B so oats or whole meal bread or nuts etc. You can have sensible portions of rice and pasta too.
I’ve lost 19.5 lbin 6 weeks on sw and feel really well. No need to eat mueller lights, hi hi bars etc. So far today I’ve had overnight oats with berries, salmon stir fry and dinner is lamb casserole.

Dixiechickonhols · 15/02/2019 14:37

Should say on slimming world not several

PinkHeart5914 · 15/02/2019 14:41

You just need to eat less calories and you will lose weight, yes beg & fruit is good for you but you will lose weight without eating it

You can eat some chocolate, drink fizzy drinks etc as long as you exercise and have cut down calories from your normal calories intake. Your friend is probably eating a lot less than she was at her biggest size

Admittedly I’ve never done slimming world but Everytime I’ve lost weight after my dc, I have never ever given up chocolate, wine or fizzy drinks (I have always had the diet versions anyway) and the weight has always come off no bother. I exercise and keep an eye on calories, works for me.

Catamaran1 · 15/02/2019 14:44

Your friend isn't following SW if she is eating tons of sugar and beige food

Dixiechickonhols · 15/02/2019 14:57

plainspeaking 6 stone in a year is fantastic. I don’t understand the hate at all. The new 2019 programme states the flipping obvious not to overeat, states your meals should be based on free food ie protein fruit and veg. Mueller lights and mugshots are not free and need to be counted if you have them but they’re not compulsory.
Instagram seems to be full of people doing fake takeaways and sugary dessert plates or sundaes using syns at the minute. You can have as an occasional thing but in reality most people doing well on sw will be eating salads, veg omelettes, stirfrys, homemade bolognaise or roast dinners etc as their day to day meals.

LellowYedbetter · 15/02/2019 15:05

SW makes me irrationally angry. “Speed food” “free food” “lashings of pasts and shove it all down your throat you big greedy fucker and while you’re at it, deep throat that bastard banana because if you chew it, it suddenly contains more calories”

Absolute con. Totally twee. Money making scam for daft people.
