She married a bloke who became president...so why is she so revered, because she married well? I just don't get it.

Margaret Thatcher was probably one of the most disliked women of the 20th century, the vitriol against her was relentless. If she had been black it would have been just the same

If she was black, the vitriol against her would have increased 10-fold.

CookingGood · 12/02/2019 10:20

The point is, all these facts being spouted off about her. None of us would know all this, if she wasn’t Michelle OBAMA. It’s her husbands status that has afforded us this knowledge.

Vulpine · 12/02/2019 10:21

They were in a restaurant owned by an ex boyfriend of hers. Barack says just think if you stayed with him you would have been a restauranteurs wife. Her reply? If I stayed with him he would have become the president.

wellhellothereall · 12/02/2019 10:26

I never said I didn't like her. I don't dislike her at all. It's the levels of adoration I don't understand. The queues to see her, the longest standing ovation ever at the Grammys etc

If you read what everyone here is saying than you would understand. But even after it was explained you still claimed she "was just someone's wife" and "other women have done better". Don't ask for a conversation and opinions and then refuse to accept the truth.

theworldistoosmall · 12/02/2019 10:29

There is no saying we wouldn't have heard of Michelle Robinson because she was doing so much work for underprivileged before they met.

This^^ if she was black the hatred would have been much, much worse. But that doesn't matter because she would never have become PM if she were black...

No, you just claimed all her success was because she was someone's wife.

Yup. She was earning more than him lol.

RiverTam · 12/02/2019 10:34

she is a hardworking, inspirational black woman who used her position as the first black First Lady to do some good in the world. I tried to get tickets for her talk with Chimamanda, what an amazing meeting of two inspirational black women that would have been - did anyone on here get to go?

No, she wouldn't have written that book and had all this if her husband hadn't been president - but that doesn't mean she doesn't deserve the platform she has.

Popuppippa · 12/02/2019 10:42

When they first met at Sidley Austin, SHE was assigned as HIS mentor! That should tell you something.

In a truly equitable world she should have been POTUS not him. However, the world isn't quite ready for a female president, let alone a black female president. Hopefully that will change, and soon.

Lweji · 12/02/2019 10:42

We'll never know what she'd have accomplished since 2008. That's 11 years ago and she's still young.
For all we know she could have gone into politics herself and become President. Not that I think she'd have the inclination.

liverbird10 · 12/02/2019 10:43

Oh dear. Biscuit

Sheelala · 12/02/2019 10:50

No, you just claimed all her success was because she was someone's wife.

What was claimed was that her renown is because she was the wife of the president of the USA.

To be fair, she single handedly destroyed the livelihood & industry of thousands of working class families and did nothing to reduce the economic devastation
I totally agree, i certainly wasn’t praising her.

workingalldaylong
But not if she’d done a good job. If she’d have been a good prime minister, there’d have been hardly any.

Racecardriver · 12/02/2019 10:56

Yeah pretty much. She seems like a lovely person but she hasn’t achieved anything expectional unlike her husband.

Really?! have you even bothered reading the thread or at least googled her??

Arkengarthdale · 12/02/2019 11:02

And she has fabulous arms Grin

I have, I don't see where it said that anything Michelle Obama has achieved is down to her husband. What I have seen is posters happy to posit that everything her husband has achieved is down to her though.

Great - please copy and paste those posts as I’d love to read them.

@Grumbling she would make an amazing president!!

People always need someone to put on a pedestal. Frankly of all the contenders who play the fame game either by intent or by proxy I'd rather they were OTT in their praise of a woman who is worthy than OTT for a brave actor who faced his demons or a courageous singer who gave up drugs after being caught red handed.

It's unlikely that any of this attention is getting to Michelle Obama and making her believe she's something she's not. If anything, it'll probably spur her on another campaign to right another wrong in the world because she currently has the media's attention to get her voice heard.

There are many people worthy of praise, just because she's famous by proxy it doesn't mean she's lacking in merit for the praise being heaped on her.

No you wouldn't. You would say that they didn't mean everything he had achieved was down to her. So I'll pick my words more carefully.

What I have seen is posters happy to position that that for which Barack Obama is most renowned, is thanks to his wife as much as if not more so than himself.

HTH.

People always need someone to put on a pedestal. I think you've nailed it there.
