to assume my new neighbour is a massive racist?

New neighbours over the road moved in over the weekend.

They have 3 vehicles, one car each and a sports car.

The sports car has what can only be a personalised number plate reading XXXX KKK (obvs not actually XXXX but a combination of letters and numbers that would definitely be one you'd have to pay for).

So... Why would you pay for a number plate with KKK on? DP thinks I'm being judgemental and maybe it was the only one with the first part that they wanted so they overlooked the ending but surely nobody would do that? I mean it's like having a number plate reading N4ZI - you just wouldn't would you?

Maybe your the Racist for immediately assuming KKK stands for what you think..

what on earth does this mean? Grin.

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 12/02/2019 07:09

No I don’t believe they are racists due to car initials, your allegation is unfounded and you sound uneducated if you think this is what is classed as racism.

i know its funny! i love people on mn self righteously going 'get a life'.

i think your thread attracted a lot of brexiteers, thats all.

Beerincomechampagnetastes · 12/02/2019 07:21

I think you’re getting a hard time op for asking a perfectly reasonable question!!

We are all a wee bit nosey when new neighbours move in and attempt to get a picture of them.

KKK is def I usual and would set my radar off but then the worse person in the world I’ve ever encountered had a personalised number plate so I’m biased against anybody in the world who has them. FOREVER

dazzlingdeborahrose · 12/02/2019 07:28

YANBU for being bemused at people not knowing the association with KKK.
YABU to assume your neighbours are racist based on this alone.

It would certainly make me raise an eyebrow though.

Elderflower14 · 12/02/2019 07:56

Has Wayne and Colleen moved opposite you???? 😂 😂 😂

Aridane · 12/02/2019 08:27

Are they the Kardashian’s?

Teaandcrisps · 12/02/2019 08:49

I'm with you OP and my immediate thought would be why would anyone opt for this as a personalised number plate. You either know it's a racist organisation and ally with its values or you are ignorant of it. Either way I would steer clear of said neighbours.

For those pearl clutches who are inferring that OP doesn't have a clue - get a grip - its a perfectly reasonable assumption to make. And I'm quite frankly shocked at the level of dishminishment of just how offensive KKK is.

But of couse, you all know better than the DVLA who have banned KKK number plates on 68 model plates...And why? because they are considered offensive!!!!!!!!

Unbelievable.

I've really enjoyed this thread!

pineapplebryanbrown · 12/02/2019 11:55

I've always wondered why none of my neighbours have washing lines. I assumed they were just fancy, now i know better, they don't want me to see their robes and hoods.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 12/02/2019 12:08

I’d raise an eyebrow based on the little you know so far. I wouldn’t want a kkk numberplate and would take steps to change it if I bought it on a secondhand car.

bobstersmum · 12/02/2019 12:10

I knew a family with these plates! They all had kk or kkk it was to do with their last name as far as I know. They were very expensive photographers, if you are in the Lancashire area it could be them, and they weren't racist as far as I knew! I do agree though that they could have better plates as kkk is obviously going to attract negative attention.

GahWhatever · 12/02/2019 13:05
  1. When you go round to introduce yourself to your new neighbours, welcome card and bunch of flowers in hand, can you do it when their children Keiran, Kirsty and Karen are visiting with the Grandkids ?
  2. 3 cars you say? If the other two have BNP and EDL in the number plates you may have a point.
BusterGonad · 12/02/2019 13:13

If I saw a car I liked and I noticed (probably wouldn't) that the number plates were KKK I'd still buy it because I actually want that car, would I go to the hassle of changing them? Nope because you'd have to be a strange imo to think I'm a KKK member because of my number plate.
Also, I was on the understanding that the KKK was a secretive sect, so surely they wouldn't advertise the fact they are members by advertising it on their number plates!

Pfnb1 · 12/02/2019 17:49

It's not unusual (YABU if you think that I'm Tom Jones)

to assume my new neighbour is a massive racist?
Pfnb1 · 12/02/2019 17:51

Maybe they're Polish catholics, or work on an Estonian helpdesk

to assume my new neighbour is a massive racist?
gamerwidow · 12/02/2019 18:05

I once didn’t buy a car because of its KKK number plate.
I was worried people would assume I was a racist because of it and also thought it would be a magnet for vandals.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 12/02/2019 18:36

IME neighbourhoods are happier places when people mind their own business and let others mind theirs. We've been in our house over two years and I've barely noticed my neighbours' cars, let alone troubled to analyze the contents of their reg plates. Have you thought of the possibility that you're reading far too much into this?

For the record, I've publicly criticized racists on more than one occasion. It's the right thing to to, and if I judge my safety isn't compromised I'll continue doing it in future. But taking a stand against this obnoxious behaviour is one thing. Bothering about covert messages in people's car registration plates is quite another.

QoFE · 12/02/2019 18:49

Thing is, I'm not very well educated or well read or well travelled. I've only ever left the country once (trip to France 15 years ago). I didn't even finish my A levels never mind go to uni. I grew up without a TV!

But somehow, despite this, I know exactly who the KKK are and would never ever want to display their initials. I mean FFS they were lynching black people in living memory

I genuinely had no idea most people in the UK didn't know about the KKK and that it wouldn't be considered a problem to have those initials displayed so prominently. This thread has been a total eye opener to me. I honestly didn't know it was not general knowledge.

Still amazed by the number of people calling me a sticky beak and a bigot and a curtain twitcher. It's a shiny flashy look-at-me car. Every time I open my front door, there is the number plate bang opposite me. Sorry for having eyes, everyone Wink

Kkk doesn't mean a lot in the U.K.- I doubt even 30% of people would know what it stood for if that. More likely they and Kevin and Kim!

phoenix1404 · 12/02/2019 19:01

I used to have a car with the combination XKX in the licence plate. Was told by a friend that this was a "good" plate to have because Xs and Ks confuse speeding cameras. Could be something like that?

(apologies if this has already been covered - the thread is 6 pages in and I've only read page 1)

Igotthemheavyboobs · 12/02/2019 19:25

Pfnb1

The 'KKK 805S' would probably make me raise an eyebrow Grin

Lizzie48 · 12/02/2019 19:31

I think a racist in this country would be more likely to choose the initials EDL personally. Or UK1P possibly. I've never seen any evidence of the KKK being a big deal in this country, except in American films.

For all that, I wouldn't like seeing a car numberplate with KKK on it either.
