to assume my new neighbour is a massive racist?

New neighbours over the road moved in over the weekend.

They have 3 vehicles, one car each and a sports car.

The sports car has what can only be a personalised number plate reading XXXX KKK (obvs not actually XXXX but a combination of letters and numbers that would definitely be one you'd have to pay for).

So... Why would you pay for a number plate with KKK on? DP thinks I'm being judgemental and maybe it was the only one with the first part that they wanted so they overlooked the ending but surely nobody would do that? I mean it's like having a number plate reading N4ZI - you just wouldn't would you?

Perhaps it’s a plate that came with the car, or perhaps they just haven’t realised.

The KKK won’t necessarily be on everyone’s radar. Unless they’re burning crosses in the front garden and you see an awful lot of white linen on the washing line, I wouldn’t assume anything just yet.

onlyk · 11/02/2019 13:37

Do not assume based on a license plate which could be explained away multiple ways which do not include being racist.

DGRossetti · 11/02/2019 13:40

Are they all white cars ?

lettymoo · 11/02/2019 13:40

I really doubt they're ku klux klan, I don't think very many people are at all and there seem to be a lot of folk who don't actually know what kkk means. I think it's probably a complete coincidence that they have those letters on their number plate. It could mean anything or absolutely nothing. If the plate was KKK 1 and the owner wore a white cloak and pointy hat then it'd be another story

RiverTam · 11/02/2019 13:40

gotta love MN for still going on the basis that even if it looks like a shit and smells like a shit you Absolutely Shouldn't Assume It's A Shit. Excuses excuses...

They're either racist, pig ignorant or terminally stupid so whichever way not anyone I'd want to be living next door to.

PopGoesTheWeaz · 11/02/2019 13:42

This may be outing, but I bought a used car with that plate (LL## KKK). I was quite embarrassed about it, but it was an old beat up car and was definitely not a personalised plate. (And because the first four digits were standard LL## format I think it was obvious it wasn't personalised.)

We ended up selling it on to a pastor from a west african church!

You sound like a curtain twitcher with little to fill your day - I pity the (entirely innocent) newcomers to be honest.

RiverTam, as you have all the answers, which one are me and SaveKevin?

soulrider · 11/02/2019 13:45

I wouldn't assume racist in the UK. I can imagine that there's a sizeable number of people who aren't really aware. I'm pretty sure I only know about the kkk from reading John Grisham

Helmetbymidnight · 11/02/2019 13:45

They're not skint though, are they?

I think its fair to make that assumption, no?

paintinmyhairAgain · 11/02/2019 13:46

helmet GrinGrin nice observation there !

Could be the owner of the Lego Group, I hear he's into sporty cars.

That's me!!

Filling my day trolling the busybodies on MN Grin

Sandsnake · 11/02/2019 13:51

I also wouldn’t assume racist. The other numbers / letters in the ref might be relevant though. For example, if you’ve got an AH, 88 or 18 in there then you may have an issue.

paintinmyhairAgain · 11/02/2019 13:51

all round to op's neighbours place with the flaming torches, pitchforks and rope then, we'll flush 'em out !
seriously though, i doubt mainly younger people have any idea who the kkk even are,

paintinmyhairAgain · 11/02/2019 13:53

Knickers Kidnap Klub ? might be an idea to keep a check on your smalls op on wash day Grin

BloodyHellBeryl · 11/02/2019 13:54

My husband used to own a car with the last three letters being KKK. It was issued by the DVLA and he's about as far removed from being a racist as you can get. Confused

Just hoping that you're not on my jury when I hit the dock .....

Alternatively, you might have found the shy owners of Krispy Kreme Kings? That did make me laugh. Grin

I fecking love Mumsnet.

pineapplebryanbrown · 11/02/2019 13:58

I've seen a kkk plate nearby and when I raised an eyebrow to a fellow curtain twitcher she said "oh, kiss kiss kiss!"

I put it down to duvet covers and fitted sheets, the kkk is dead in England.

HenweeArcher · 11/02/2019 13:59

The KKK are not active in Britain so it seems a bit of a leap to assume some kind of racist connection. Do you think anyone with the letters SS or even WBC in their numberplate is some kind of racist/extremist for example?

Eliza9917 · 11/02/2019 14:10

I bet many, many, many younger people would tell you the kardashians if you asked them what they associated KKK with or knew of it.

I bet it doesn't mean anything, its just an unfortunate plate.

QoFE · 11/02/2019 14:13

Curtain twitcher Grin

Its parked facing my front door. I can see it every time I go in or out. It's a very shiny flashy car in an unusual colour that attracts a second glance, hence me noticing the number plate at all. Based on the price bracket of the house and vehicles I am going to say it's a safe bet that they could afford to change it if they wanted to.
