To tell dh if he cancels the bed order we're having single beds!

Dh has been moaning for a bit that we need a new mattress. He says it's uncomfortable.....I think it's fine but it is over ten years old. So I said fine, on one condition we upgrade from a double to a king size.

He begrudgingly agrees but doesn't think we need a bigger bed. We currently have a memory foam mattress which he says he dislikes because it's cold and now seems to have a bit of a permanent dip in which is age related.

He wants a rock hard mattress, I broke my back years ago and have back and pelvis issues and need something which supports my back better.

So we try loads of mattresses, I can't cope with the firm ones as I know my back isn't supported. We end up buying a 2k Tempur firm memory foam mattress. He preferred the non memory foam one but said he could cope with the memory foam one. Sales guy has promised him the Tempur ones aren't cold.

By the time we've got a base and a headboard it's 3k. We can afford it but I admit it's a lot of money. But I don't want to spend less and have an uncomfortable bed.

Dh is now having second thoughts and says he might cancel it because it's a lot of money, he doesn't feel we need a king size bed and he's not sure about the memory foam. The bed shop do a 6week no quibble return thing if you hate the mattress. So if he really hated it then fair enough.

But I'm a bit annoyed he wants to cancel it now before trying it, especially when in the shop he said the mattress was ok. It's not like I've made him buy one he hated!

There's no way I can have a firm mattress so if he cancels it we will have to have single beds. Which will take more space than a king size which is the other thing he was moaning about, that there won't be much space left in the bedroom!

@ifangow thank you, I think this may be the way forward 😊

We also have a super-king ottoman with storage and zip link mattresses (out of necessity rather than choice when the SK mattress couldn’t fit up our stairs!)

We’ll never have a “one-piece” mattress again. We don’t disturb each other all night, no matter how much I roll about! Our join is quite obvious - because we didn’t choose a zip link we didn’t have the chance to order a mattress topper to cover the join. However, it has its advantages - it’s the perfect size to contain 3yo DD with limited wriggling.

We have a superking zipped and linked. DH wanted firm mattress so we got those and I have a big thick matress memory foam topper on my side. Snore!

@Cosmosgrowinmygarden. Go for it, you won't regret it. Once you get the hang of making it, which you will quickly, you will wonder why you ever struggled with anything else 😊

Hopoindown31 · 04/02/2019 19:52

You spend 1/3 of your life in bed, far more than you spend in your car. £3k isn't a lot for years of good sleep.

pisspawpatrol · 06/02/2019 12:20

@ifangyo you can also buy small single mattresses that are 2'6" and the same length as a king size bed. So they would not overhang a standard king size bed. 🙂

Ifangyow · 06/02/2019 12:33

Yes Pisspawpatrol. Sorry, I was referring to the European ones.
I bought two new memory foam mattresses for my bed last year on one of my visits home. It came rolled up and was roughly the size of a rolled up packaged single duvet, so fitted in my car boot nicely for the journey back here.
Unwrapped them on the bed and stood agog watching it expand. Five minutes later I was gasping '' omg it's still growing! '
Visions of waking in the morning engulfed by a marshmallowing mattress 😱

10% get zipnlink beds with two different mattresses.

Get two full sized singles = super-king = happy couple.

Cover with a topper and a super-king duvet or two single duvets.

SushiMonster · 06/02/2019 12:41

I don't understand adults who sleep with a DP/DH in anything less than a super-king

Why would you give yourselves LESS space in bed than a child (in their nice single bed)?

DontGoIntoTheLongGrass · 06/02/2019 12:46

I always come on these threads to recommend Otty. My Otty mattress is amazing. Dh has back issues (ankylosing spondylitis) and he says it's helped him no end since we bought it January last year. He's had very little issues since. I believe it's a mixed memory foam and spring and was about £8-900.

Wild stab in the dark here - no room/can't afford/like to snuggle

But go you with your super king and cold empty space in the middle of the bed.
