To tell dh if he cancels the bed order we're having single beds!

Dh has been moaning for a bit that we need a new mattress. He says it's uncomfortable.....I think it's fine but it is over ten years old. So I said fine, on one condition we upgrade from a double to a king size.

He begrudgingly agrees but doesn't think we need a bigger bed. We currently have a memory foam mattress which he says he dislikes because it's cold and now seems to have a bit of a permanent dip in which is age related.

He wants a rock hard mattress, I broke my back years ago and have back and pelvis issues and need something which supports my back better.

So we try loads of mattresses, I can't cope with the firm ones as I know my back isn't supported. We end up buying a 2k Tempur firm memory foam mattress. He preferred the non memory foam one but said he could cope with the memory foam one. Sales guy has promised him the Tempur ones aren't cold.

By the time we've got a base and a headboard it's 3k. We can afford it but I admit it's a lot of money. But I don't want to spend less and have an uncomfortable bed.

Dh is now having second thoughts and says he might cancel it because it's a lot of money, he doesn't feel we need a king size bed and he's not sure about the memory foam. The bed shop do a 6week no quibble return thing if you hate the mattress. So if he really hated it then fair enough.

But I'm a bit annoyed he wants to cancel it now before trying it, especially when in the shop he said the mattress was ok. It's not like I've made him buy one he hated!

There's no way I can have a firm mattress so if he cancels it we will have to have single beds. Which will take more space than a king size which is the other thing he was moaning about, that there won't be much space left in the bedroom!

We also have two separate mattresses and duvets with one divan/base. Like you, I have back problems from having had a broken pelvis and back in my teens. YANBU.

alreadytaken · 04/02/2019 08:00

you can get dual tension mattresses.

Vispring if you can afford it, Hypnos if you cant - lie on it for 15 minutes to see if you can tell the difference. John Lewis can supply both.

Given a choice between a decent bed and a husband I think I'd take the bed Grin

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 04/02/2019 08:12

In the Which surveys, Tempur come out bottom of the tests. Try one of the newer designs-Eve/Otta/Emma etc which you get a 100day trial with-you get to send it back then if you don’t want it and can try another-simples!

LunafortJest · 04/02/2019 08:19

Going from a double to a king is a massive leap. I would have said queen. And don't forget that you are now going to need to buy new bedsheets, new blankets, new doonas. I just went from a double to a queen And my double sheets are now useless, they simply don't fit. So you'll need to add a lot to that to get sheets, blankets, etc It will work out a LOT all together.

Daisydoesnt · 04/02/2019 08:28

OP two single mattresses linked together make a superking, not a king. Have you looked into Vispring? You can have different firmness on either sides. DO NOT settle for a mattress that is too hard for you, you will regret it from the moment it arrives!

LunafortJest · 04/02/2019 08:29

And if you change to 2 singles, you'll need to buy single sheets, blankets, doonas.

hula008 · 04/02/2019 08:37

No you just stretch the right size sheets over both surely? Still under the same blanket

Musicaltheatremum · 04/02/2019 08:39

If you put your back problems on order for tempura mattress you may be able to get it without paying VAT! that will save you a bit.

Musicaltheatremum · 04/02/2019 08:41

Agree IKEA mattresses are amazing too.

wigglybeezer · 04/02/2019 08:50

Another person who swapped to a super king with two single duvets ( wool duvets but that a whole other thread). This was after a German city break, where the bed set up in the apartment was a revelation! We went for one of the more expensive base/mattress combos from IKEA and are very happy with it.

wigglybeezer · 04/02/2019 08:53

It's also easier laundering and airing single bedding, another advantage.

Cosmosgrowinmygarden · 04/02/2019 08:54

Ladies, may I ask those of you from Sweden and Germany who have mentioned you have separate duvets, how do you make the bed? As in how do you arrange two duvets? I'm attracted to the idea as it would be a lot easier to change the covers on two singles than on a king size duvet, which I am finding quite hard as I get older. We need a new duvet, so this might be a solution.

banivani · 04/02/2019 09:02

I dunno really coz I have a double. I think a lot of people use a bedspread to even out the difference. Otherwise I think you either a) lay one out flat with a bit of an overhang to one side, and the other one flat on top overlapping the first one with same overhang on other side or b) fold them so they lie neatly within their "own mattress" so to speak. I actually learned the trick of it from a friend who had worked in a hospital and learned how to fold blankets/duvets to make the bed but I can't explain it in words sorry. In Poland I've come across the duvets/blankets folded neatly at the foot of the bed, so the sheet is visible.

ColdCottage · 04/02/2019 09:03

I tried a number of the circa £600 + memory foam ones with a free home 100 day trial and sent them all back. In an emergency I just bought a mid firm one from IKEA and it's great. I have lower back problems and other MSK pain and it's much better than the mattresses three times the price.

banivani · 04/02/2019 09:29

I got all invested now and googled. Apparently it's popular now to make the bed with the duvets going the other way. Then you get an unbroken line, and you can fold down the top so it looks good and fluffy, and the line between the duvets will be in the middle lengthwise so not as obvious or else covered up with one of those half bedspread things. Personally I'd go cracked shifting the duvets back to the right way up before bed I think ....

NicoAndTheNiners · 04/02/2019 10:17

Well I've been to the local independent shop to try Harrison mattresses but wasn't keen.

However I found a pocket sprung one with a latex topping which I liked. Am sending dh to try it at the weekend. Half the price of the tempur one.

It's this one. Is a pocket sprung with only 1200 springs bad?

I don't get why (some) people spend £1500 to 3 grand on a mattress. You can get a perfectly good double orthopaedic mattress/memory foam mattress for 2 or 3 hundred pounds. We got a new double bed 2 years ago - wooden frame, and good quality orthopaedic mattress - for a total of £499. (Including delivery and assembly. ) Paying 2 grand for a mattress is completely batshit IMO.

Raspberry10 · 04/02/2019 10:33

Get a zip lock one where you both have your own mattress. OH has horrible hard one and I have the most lovely soft one. Ours is a super king but pretty sure you can get them smaller.

Clairaloulou · 04/02/2019 10:35

I have a king size bed but a super king duvet. It's a good idea if you're going for the separate mattresses and don't want separate duvets too.

Jaxhog · 04/02/2019 16:12

What I didn't mention is that we have a waterbed with 2 mattresses. By far the best decision we ever made. Although we've slept on a waterbed for over 30 years so are used to it. But it's so, so supportive. Like lying in the bath without getting wet.

Ifangyow · 04/02/2019 16:47

@cosmosgrowinginmygarden.
It's easy. I shake and smooth each duvet over each mattress, then tuck the inside edge underneath. If that makes sense?
The sheets are single fitted sheets, so they're simple.
The only difference between here and back home ( Germany ) are the pillows I use UK size pillows her in the UK simply because of the pillowcase size on UK bedding, back home I have my usual size pillows which look like large scatter cushions, as the pillowcases back home are sized for those.
A large bed frame containing two mattresses each with its own sheets and duvet is normal in northern European countries. I'm still amazed at how two adults m an age to squash into a double or king size bed here and actually share a duvet.

Ifangyow · 04/02/2019 16:48

Manage.
I don't know where the gaps came from 😮

pisspawpatrol · 04/02/2019 17:12

You can buy european single mattresses from Ikea that are the length of a kingsize but the width of a small single. We have them on the ikea day bed and two of them fit side by side on our normal kingsize bed.

Yes to separate duvets too. We have a kingsize duvet each, brought from our own houses when we moved into together and we've just kept them. It's heaven.

Ifangyow · 04/02/2019 18:11

The standard single European mattresses are a normal single bed width of three feet. Two of those would each hang over the edge of a king size bed. A king size being five feet wide.Smile
