To lance this? (Dental)

I'm fully prepared to be told I'm BU for even thinking about it.

Have an infection in a tooth (crown dropped out and it got infected while I was waiting for an appointment)

Went to the emergency dentist yesterday and got antibiotics. I'm on dose four and while it's feeling better, the swelling isn't shifting yet.

I've just had a good look and there's basically a huge zit like lump on my gum. I don't think it's going to go unless the pus comes out. (Full disclosure, I've been through this before with this tooth and it needed lancing before it healed.) It is so sore Sad

Have a dental appointment on Wed (first available) and there are no emergency appointments available today.

I have access to sterile needles (mum is diabetic and I can use one of her lancets)

AIBU to even think about this?

Thanks

I would have to do it. I wouldn’t be able to help myself and I bet the relief will be amazing!!!

MerryMarigold · 03/02/2019 18:09

The dentist popped my dd's one just just with pressure. I was really surprised. I would. The antibiotics will help it heal better.

IShitGlitter · 03/02/2019 18:13

yep go for it!

TemptressofWaikiki · 03/02/2019 18:20

My mother is a dentist and I asked her this not long ago over the phone. Providing you are on or about to take antibiotics and not just lancing the pus-filled area without follow-up treatment, you should be fine. Use a sterile needle, ideally wear fresh gloves and try to prevent the pus running down the back of your mouth. Then rinse with salt water.

picklemepopcorn · 03/02/2019 18:23

I do mine regularly. It builds up, I press it, it bursts.

Mumshappy · 03/02/2019 18:25

Id pop it if i was on antibiotics with a sterile needle and gargle with salt water afterwards.

TheWickerWoman · 03/02/2019 18:25

I had one in my top gum, I pushed it and it emptied, I swooshed some salt water sound my mouth. It filled up again a week or so later, I did the same to it again then it never came back,

God it was so satisfying.

TipseyTorvey · 03/02/2019 18:25

I'd do it. I have lanced far worse. Wash hands thoroughly and squeeze with earbuds so you don't cut the skin with your nails.

QuestionableMouse · 03/02/2019 18:32

Thanks!

I'll give a go. It feels like it needs draining, if that makes sense. And I'd rather have a bit of control over that than just leaving it to pop.

It is actually quite hard to do, but very satisfying! I would phone again in the morning and insist on an appointment. Tell them the the swelling is pointing.

MostlyBoastly · 03/02/2019 18:34

I did this and it turns out, it wasn’t puss at all. It was my bloody root and it killed.

FadedRed · 03/02/2019 18:34

Hot salt water/Corsidyl mouthwashes afterwards, several times a day, will help.

Flashinggreen · 03/02/2019 18:35

Just hot salt water is best

Oswin · 03/02/2019 18:37

I do this, I get it a lot. I feel the pressure building before the spot appears. The relief when I finally press it is amazing.

picklemepopcorn · 03/02/2019 18:38

Does anyone know if it needs to be addressed urgently? I went to dentist, he prescribed (and I took) antibiotics , but said it would come back. Which it immediately did. It doesn't bother me- can I just wait until it does?

QuestionableMouse · 03/02/2019 18:39

It's definitely pus Envy (not envy)

Pretty sure the root is already dead and tbh I'm expecting what's left of the the tooth to need extracting.

Flashinggreen · 03/02/2019 18:40

It is best to get things seen to if they have caused a large swelling. The tooth is causing the problem, the antibiotics just get rid of the infection at that time, but if you keep the cause of it it will return.

picklemepopcorn · 03/02/2019 18:43

Mine is a crown and the only molar I have on that quadrant. So taking it out will leave me toothless...!

MonkeyfaceThereturn · 03/02/2019 18:44

Make sure you film it. And post it. For medical reasons 😕

QuestionableMouse · 03/02/2019 18:51

Not sure I'll have enough hands to film it sorry. If I remember I'll take a photo of the produce Envy Bork face Envy

Jimdandy · 03/02/2019 19:44

@MonkeyfaceThereturn yes I agree. Please get someone to film it!

Amanduh · 03/02/2019 19:48

Did mine this week whilst on anti b’s. It got ten times worse after!

Ploppymoodypants · 03/02/2019 19:52

Oh I would burst it without a doubt. You will feel so much better.

Ledkr · 03/02/2019 19:53

Come on. We are waiting 😜

Superduper13 · 03/02/2019 19:56

Hope you get on OP. I had an abcess that burst and it was vile. It helped the pain a lot though when it burst so was worth the vileness!
It ended up needing draining in hospital as the infection had spread to the soft tissue in my face.
Use loads of warm salt water to clean out your mouth.
Good luck
