To think nobody likes the salad bit on the side?

You know when you go into a cafe and order a sandwich, or jacket potato and other snack, and when it comes there is a tiny bit of basic salad on the side? AIBU to think no one actually wants that? It is simply a way to make it look a bit nicer and thus charge us more money?

It really depends on the meal part of the plate.

Salad alongside scampi chips and peas - no thanks, thats decoration, its taking up the space I'd dump my tartare sauce and lemon wedge, it can sod off.
I would only eat this if I still have room after consuming the vital elements that are, scampi, chips and peas (in that order).

Salad alongside a sandwich that doesn't contain salad - this may be acceptable, ditto baked potato.

This is only if its good, fresh salad.

Two bits of limp iceberg, a slice of bland tasteless tomato and a bit of cucumber is not a 'good fresh salad' - its just plate filler and needs to fuck off.

Side salads are often just token gestures but I'll always eat it. I love salad.

daisychicken · 31/01/2019 13:31

but I hate it with hot food

So glad someone feels the same! I love a good salad but I hate cold limp salad with hot food, it just doesn't go!

SpringForEver · 31/01/2019 13:34

Agree about the bag of warm raw onion with the Indian takeaway, Ours used to always be a bag of iceberg lettuce with a bit of tomato and cucumber, and maybe a little bit of onion if they remembered it. Last time it was just a bag of onions, such a waste as all they do is pong.

Originallymeonly · 31/01/2019 13:35

I once got fired from a waitress job for scraping the untouched salad garnish into the bin. Apparently I was being wasteful, and my protests about food hygiene fell on deaf ears. I found out later the place went bust after the owner drank most of the contents of the beer cellar which technically belonged to the brewery.

RestingBitchFaced · 31/01/2019 13:35

Love it! Even when it's gone warm from the potato and got beans on. Beans and lettuce is a good combination 😬

seenna · 31/01/2019 13:36

It's always "nettle-y".

BitOutOfPractice · 31/01/2019 13:43

Where's the nutritional value in crisps?

That is totally not the point of crisps! Grin

AtLeastThreeDrinks · 31/01/2019 13:44

I always eat the salad but I do judge its limpness and lack of dressing. Usually feel like I need some greens on the side of my carbs, no matter how sad they are Grin

Hoppinggreen · 31/01/2019 13:45

I hate hot and cold food on the same plate so I usually ask them not to put the salad on if it’s warm food. I happily eat salad, just not with anything hot

RhiWrites · 31/01/2019 13:45

I eat it, but I like salad. I even eat the Indian takeaway salad bags.

hazandduck · 31/01/2019 13:47

@Rhiwhites Mum? Is that you? Wink

hatethinkingofusernames · 31/01/2019 14:12

Love it and eat everyone else's too!

recrudescence · 31/01/2019 14:17

I’ll eat it if it deserves to be eaten. Nine times out of ten it doesn’t.

Graphista · 31/01/2019 14:25

"I do, except bloody onion. Who eats raw onion." This!

An awful lot of the restaurants & takeaways by me chuck loads of diced raw white - sometimes spiced - onion on the side salads - I hate it! Don't like the taste and gives me horrendous heartburn if I eat it (even a little by accident)

If dds with me she takes my onion I take her tomatoes.

"I like it. What I don't like is getting a veggie main with no vegetables on the side with the excuse that there are already vegetables in it. I don't care. If I'm spending a tenner on a bit of goats cheese bloody quiche, I want stuff with it (mainly chips)" yep! Also seasoning - are meat dishes under seasoned now? Is it the healthy anti salt thing or is it just veggie dishes? I end up just adding my own anyway cos there's NO FLAVOUR!

"I had no idea no idea it was such a divisive issue" are you new to mn? The less controversial a topic may seem the stronger opinions posted 😂

newnameforthis7 · 31/01/2019 14:27

YABU I LOVE a side salad on almost everything. Just coz you don't doesn't mean everyone else doesn't. Confused

newnameforthis7 · 31/01/2019 14:28

I eat raw onion too (in a salad.)

sanityisamyth · 31/01/2019 14:29

I'm allergic to tomato so always ask for meals plain. I can't even risk them just removing the tomato from the salad (if they are all made up in bulk) so it safer to have meals salad free. I'd eat them if I could trust them.

wingardium8 · 31/01/2019 14:49

Yeah, normally it's crap - especially the raw onion, yeuch. But my favourite cafe does such an amazing bit of salad with its omelettes that I've been known to go in and ask for a whole bowl of it on its own.
It's not actually on the menu as a 'thing' but I was happy for them to set whatever price they saw fit. Amazing Grin

ppeatfruit · 01/02/2019 09:43

Me too sanity I get horrible eczema from tomatoes. Everyone usually thinks they're so healthy !!!!!

TheGoogleMum · 01/02/2019 10:41

Yanbu I don't like salad anyway so in this situation it gets totally ignored by me! I occasionally eat the tomato because I do quite like those (but nothing green!)

TheLazyDuchess · 01/02/2019 10:43

I like the salad, and always eat it.

EnoughSnowAlready · 01/02/2019 11:37

I like a nice chopped salad with my sandwich, though I don't like tomatoes or huge pieces of iceberg lettuce. I've never understood the point of crisps or tortilla chips with a sandwich. They don't go together imho.

cushioncovers · 01/02/2019 11:37

I like it.

cushioncovers · 01/02/2019 11:38

I love raw onion in a salad or a sandwich. I'm amazed others don't. Grin
