To think nobody likes the salad bit on the side?

You know when you go into a cafe and order a sandwich, or jacket potato and other snack, and when it comes there is a tiny bit of basic salad on the side? AIBU to think no one actually wants that? It is simply a way to make it look a bit nicer and thus charge us more money?

I really can't be bothered with it. How can a soggy lettuce leaf, half a tomato and a slice of cucumber have any nutritional value?

Funkyslippers · 31/01/2019 12:28

I love it. If it's got no dressing on it I just add some mayo

CallMeVito · 31/01/2019 12:28

I do, except bloody onion. Who eats raw onion.

so true, who does that!

Ribbonsonabox · 31/01/2019 12:29

I really like side salads! Get sad when cafes dont put effort into them and it's just 90% bits of onion. Nothing better than a good side salad and a few crisps! Plus it makes me feel theres some nutritional value to my giant cheesy panini!!

Whisky2014 · 31/01/2019 12:29

I eat raw onion...yum!

Mmmhmmm · 31/01/2019 12:30

I don't mind a plain side of salad but I go to one place that tries to do a fancy version of it with weird greens but their homemade dressing tastes vile.

Ribbonsonabox · 31/01/2019 12:30

And I actually love salad with baked potatoes and beans! I even make that at home myself!

Inaboatwithoutapaddle247 · 31/01/2019 12:30

I like it if I ordered jacket potato with tuna for example (not if it was cheese and beans).
If I ordered a ham sandwich though I prefer the salad in with the sandwich than on the side.
We all have our own preferences though.
I think they usually add the side salad to make it look more presentable.

It depends on the quality, I love a bit of greenery/fresh crunch, but often in a bog standard cafe (ie not a trendy one) it's a few pieces of sad, browned iceberg and some horrid bit of tomato usually the top or bottom bit which nobody wants - obviously left over from putting the nice bits in an actual sandwich. Or some dried-out cucumber.

If it is some nice bits of salad I definitely eat it.

EmeraldShamrock · 31/01/2019 12:32

I like it, salad chips some mayo go great together.

PepsiLola · 31/01/2019 12:34

Coming on to say I love raw onion and think it actually makes salad taste nice...

(There always has to be one different doesn't there, sorry!)

ppeatfruit · 31/01/2019 12:35

Oh dear I've just had a lovely lunch with raw onion I LOVE IT !!!!!! Apparently it's great for our biomes Grin

GahWhatever · 31/01/2019 12:36

I love a salad garnish, just a little textural juxtaposition, as my DM would say!

I also like salad with hot things: curry or lasagne or a steak. In the summer I'll have cold salmon or meat with salad and hot buttered newps. DH hates this!

MorningsEleven · 31/01/2019 12:37

I love raw onion too. Wanna smell my breath?

Freshstart40 · 31/01/2019 12:38

I like it too!

Polarbearflavour · 31/01/2019 12:40

My favourite cafe does a small side salad and coleslaw with paninis, it goes really well with a tuna melt panini!

toach · 31/01/2019 12:40

DH loves it, he eats his, mine and any raw onion he can get his mitts on.

GB54 · 31/01/2019 12:42

I like it!

Hexaqua · 31/01/2019 12:42

I like it! DH often leaves his though - so I eat his too.

toach · 31/01/2019 12:42

I don't like the relish in a McDonald's burger, I scrape it out and give it to DD.

Nottobesoldseparately · 31/01/2019 12:42

Love a bit of garnish, I eat DH's too, whether he wants it or not.

Like it with hot food, but not touching it......hence why I always have to pick it off a burger.

I also love it with a curry! I happily keep mine back from the starter plate to have with my main!

aethelgifu · 31/01/2019 12:43

I love it! Especially the coleslaw.

CallMeVito · 31/01/2019 12:43

with the new McDonalds touchscreens, you can ask for a burger without any unwanted stuff. Totally worth it.

Lovemusic33 · 31/01/2019 12:44

I like it, even more so if there’s coleslaw and raw onion. My dd’s hate anything green on their plate so I get to eat there’s too.

RavenLG · 31/01/2019 12:47

I like it, even more so if there’s coleslaw and raw onion.

@Lovemusic33 I think you're my soulmate. I always steal DPs raw onions.
