To think nobody likes the salad bit on the side?

You know when you go into a cafe and order a sandwich, or jacket potato and other snack, and when it comes there is a tiny bit of basic salad on the side? AIBU to think no one actually wants that? It is simply a way to make it look a bit nicer and thus charge us more money?

I quite like it, as long as it's fresh. I'd be happy with a handful of cherry tomatoes and a pickled gherkin or two. A dollop of nice coleslaw and a few slices of beetroot are even better! My only objections are to raw onion and brown iceberg lettuce.

VWpurse · 31/01/2019 12:48

I like it and I like raw onion.

Also I find that if you say you want the burger (or whatever) but without the chips and it’s one price for the meal, they will often bump up the garnish to fill the plate so you don’t have to order an extra side salad. Works for me!

Tattybear16 · 31/01/2019 12:49

The relish on McDonald’s is the best bit, love the gherkins, No one in my family likes them so I get to eat everyones. yummy

Patchworksack · 31/01/2019 12:49

I love a really good salad but the crap served by the average cafe is a far cry from that. A piece of iceberg lettuce, half a freezing cold tomato and a bit of cucumber and no dressing...bleurgh.

ppeatfruit · 31/01/2019 12:49

Great, raw onion eaters!!!!!!!
I do agree that those pesticide soaked bits of tired lettuce they put on the plate in most places are a waste of time.

DameSquashalot · 31/01/2019 12:50

I love the salad

Dvg · 31/01/2019 12:50

I actually love it XD they always use a nice salad dressing and is usually the first thing I eat

mydogisthebest · 31/01/2019 12:51

I like it and usually eat mine and DH's.

I also love raw onion, especially red onion. I like it too when they put raw grated carrot or red or white cabbage on the plate - yum

cheminotte · 31/01/2019 12:51

I like a decent one but can’t stand coleslaw!
Also agree with PP that veg should come as standard with meals and not be another fiver for three bits of broccoli or 6 green beans.

crispysausagerolls · 31/01/2019 12:51

I AM SITTING HERE EATING A SANDWICH AND HAVE LEFT THE SALAD AFTER POLITELY PICKING AT IT I HATE IT!!!!!!! 😂😂😂😂😂

Pascha · 31/01/2019 12:51

I like it if it's mixed salad with some tomato es added. Not if they chuck dressing on it though and I hate coleslaw.

MyShinyWhiteTeeth · 31/01/2019 12:53

I love them if they are well done. I generally appreciate them and have them at home too.

CookPassBabtridge · 31/01/2019 12:54

I don't eat out much but do get salad with most of my takeaways and I never eat that.

LadyandGent · 31/01/2019 12:59

I eat it for one of my 5-a-day

BlooShampoo · 31/01/2019 13:00

I like it

PeanuttyButter · 31/01/2019 13:04

I eat it if it looks ok

Hugglessnuggles · 31/01/2019 13:05

I do EXCEPT the one time we went out for Sunday lunch and it was on the side of my roast beef dinner......

Aridane · 31/01/2019 13:06

Manky limp lettuce sitting on the side, no thanks.

A fresh dressed small side salad, yes please

WhatIsTheMeaningOfThis · 31/01/2019 13:07

I like a good side salad. Not a limp and wilting 'garnish' but salad on the side. I eat that first.

WhatIsTheMeaningOfThis · 31/01/2019 13:08

I also agree that veg should be standard with a meal and not an optional extra.

JellyBears · 31/01/2019 13:11

I don’t like it but I eat it to be healthy lol

SpringForEver · 31/01/2019 13:13

I like it if it is clean and fresh. Not if it is some manky old leaves with slime from a bag.

Am also aware that it may have been on several plates before. Was served one once that had chips underneath it. I had ordered a jacket potato. Since then I stopped eating them in that chain and would sprinkle sugar on it.

Had a friend who opened a cafe and she would put the unused salad back to use again, and family who worked in one who also said it was done.

I always hope that whoever had it before me didn't manhandle it and often wonder about the other items that may have been re-distributed.

Jenny17 · 31/01/2019 13:13

IMO salad has no place next to hot food. Don't see the point next to a sandwich better in than out.

hazandduck · 31/01/2019 13:23

@springforever ewww. That is vile! I worked in a cafe for years and never knew anyone to do that.

The salad I will never get is the type you get with a takeaway, particularly Indian, a bag of raw onion sat on top of the tubs so it’s warm and sweaty and just pongs. I always thought nobody ever ate those until I nearly threw it out in front of my parents and they had a fit!

Lauren83 · 31/01/2019 13:24

I like it, but I question if anyone likes the lettuce at Miller and Carter Hmm
