Warwick Police haven't prosecuted anyone for these vile rape threats and Warwick uni are now letting (some of?) the perpetrators back in to study at the same university alongside those they discussed threatening to rape.

Would you be happy sending your child here?

Warwick students suspended over rape threats allowed to return earlyly*_

The fact that any person refers to what they wrote as banter and not a criminal offense shows what disregard many people have for young females.

And it's that sort of response that makes me start to wonder if misogynist abuse should be treated in the same way as racist or homophobic abuse, ie like the hate crime it is.

PerkingFaintly · 01/02/2019 12:38

What ifonlyus said.

M3lon · 01/02/2019 13:08

Well I've checking in that our Uni's policy would be robust enough to expel someone for comments made on a private SM group and success.

So at least if anything like that happens here, I'll know if the cuprits come back its because people are minimizing the crime not because our policy didn't hold water.

Beerflavourednipples · 01/02/2019 13:46

But, I don’t believe the vast majority of our young men think or behave like the men involved in this case.

I think that's a bit naive tbh. I'm sure on the outside these men were perfectly nice people. In fact one of the girls said they were her 'friends', and she was obviously shocked when she saw what they had been writing about her.

They wrote this stuff because they didn't think anyone would ever see it.

I'm not saying AMALT but I think it's more prevelant than we think.

OdeToDiazepam · 01/02/2019 14:04

Shocking

If the banter comment is reference to what I said as it is me you are quoting, then read my post properly and in context before accusing me of something I didn't say to make your own point.

I found out that I was being discussed in terms of being raped at a school I worked out. The info was passed to me by a student. The would be “rapist’ was an educational support worker. It was such a horrible feeling and I felt violated. I am an older woman and able to deal with a considerable amount of bullying (and did at that school) but for a young woman living away from home and trying to build adult relationships with young men it must be frightening that the trust they have built up has been destroyed. And they haven’t been supported.

For some of the commentators on here trying to minimise the boy’s behaviour I would hope you are never put in that position because it is a horrible feeling to suddenly not feel safe and know that people are discussing doing harm to you.

pumpkin1976 · 01/02/2019 14:21

The Provost Christine Ennew at Warwick has released a statement today.

It talks about the perpetrators having to engage in direct work around their behaviour, as one of the conditions of them returning when the women talked about have graduated.

DishingOutDone · 01/02/2019 14:24

Sorry if this has already been said but surely the best thing we can do now is just tell and keep telling, my eldest is apply to Uni and some of her friends have applied to Warwick - if even a handful of people withdrew their applications based on this, it would help. I think I'd at least be writing saying I didn't want my daughter to go there - but then Warwick wasn't on our list. I wonder if my DD's interview questions should include "how safe are female students coming to your campus?"

Nanny0gg · 01/02/2019 14:25

I doubt there are as many working environments where these chats would be tolerated from employers

Um... sadly still some City Traders.

Do universities not have anything about 'bringing the name of the University into disrepute' in their policies? Quite a useful catch-all.

No, I didn't read your post and my post was not a direct response to any posts here. I've heard the rape comments referred to as banter in other domains.

GCAcademic · 01/02/2019 14:28

The Provost Christine Ennew at Warwick has released a statement today.

Is this a new statement, or do you mean the one she released yesterday? I can’t see anything released today.

Ifonlyus · 01/02/2019 14:29

I will be asking this question to all the universities I visit with my DD next year.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 01/02/2019 14:36

Do universities have a code of conduct for their students? And if not, should they have one, that all students sign up to, that includes what constitutes unacceptable behaviour in person and via text/phone/social media etc - with appropriate sanctions set out in the code?

I am the mother of three sons, and I would consider myself an utter failure as a parent, if any one of my sons went in for this sort of 'bantz'. I am as sure as I can be, that they would not do this - that dh and I have taught them to respect other people, and how and where to draw the line where banter is concerned.

Banter, in and of itself, is not wrong - as long as everyone concerned is laughing. The women at Warwick were not laughing.

pumpkin1976 · 01/02/2019 14:38

My apologies it was 24 hrs ago. I don’t stare at twitter all day so didn’t realise sorry.

I’m coming off here now, have a peaceful weekend all

GCAcademic · 01/02/2019 14:41

Sorry @pumpkin1976, my post wasn’t meant to be stroppy! I was just wondering if something else had been issued today Blush

pumpkin1976 · 01/02/2019 14:59

That’s alright, no offence was taken 😀 GCAcademic. I’m going to stand back now and see how it all pans out. I have a loved one at Warwick. I know the Uni hasn’t made the best decision but I also know there are many good students there and staff who are well meaning too.

GCAcademic · 01/02/2019 15:12

Yes, I know academics there. They work bloody hard and are incredibly committed to their students. The management put a lot of pressure on them, so I can imagine how it feels to see that same management then wreck everything you’ve worked so hard for.

PlantsArePeopleToo · 01/02/2019 15:24

Is there anything this woman or her family can do? Can she appeal the decision to allow them back?

If it was my daughter I wouldn't rest until these little toerags were kicked out of the uni.

Yogafanatic · 01/02/2019 17:48

My dd was looking at going to Warwick this year definitely not now.

ReflectentMonatomism · 01/02/2019 17:49

Statement from the VC on their website, with Q&A. I am normally relaxed about split infinitives, but ugly writing often reveals ugly thinking. In which spirit, I give you We will seek to more proactively promote.

Letter is here: warwick.ac.uk/insite/news/intnews2/vc_open_letter/ and links to the q&a.

ReflectentMonatomism · 01/02/2019 17:50

There is an interesting mention in the open letter of upcoming legal action. I suspect that means the ring header, who has been effectively expelled, is going to challenge it. But it could be one if the complainants. It isn’t the university.

Vivianebrezilletbrooks · 01/02/2019 17:51

Considering how much money each student brings in its easy to see why they've allowed them to return early or been allowed to continue at all but it still is deplorable that they haven't been kicked off their courses full stop. Angry

GCAcademic · 01/02/2019 17:54

That statement from the VC is dreadful. So out of touch. That first paragraph is all about himself. The text is more about the poor boys than the victims. Horrific. If that’s what he comes up with after “listening”, it reflects really badly on him and his management of the university. A lot of the academic departments have issued statements today and are obviously very angry with the senior management.

GCAcademic · 01/02/2019 17:57

Considering how much money each student brings in its easy to see why they've allowed them to return early

There are three students who are returning early. On the other hand, there will be hundreds of applicants who withdraw their applications or don’t apply because of this. The university is going to lose millions in fee income because of this.
