To think MNHQ should donate £10k to each of the charities

from their Christmas Appeal

They launched the Christmas Appeal on 20th December with absolutely no fan fare.

The response has been underwhelming (no offense to people who generously donated) with one charity getting £200 and another £73.

Should MNHQ donate the £10k they promised to match to each charity or go back to the drawing board and find charities that members want to support?

There's still time to donate if you wish.

I totally missed the appeal and have just donated.

Match giving frustrates me - there's 10k per charity there so give them it. Don't foist CSR onto mumsnet members - do it because they're good charities which you (mumsnet) chose.

How disappointing for charities to have such a golden carrot dangled.

One of the charities - the Prince's Trust - has an annual income of £73 million, I think MNHQ should have chosen charities that would have really benefited from £10k/£20k

You're quite right, though finding a national charity which reaches all of the UK and to whom 10k would make a big difference is tricky I think.

MNetters came up with plenty when we used to be asked!

MN members should get to vote on the charities!

littlemeitslyn · 29/01/2019 21:15

£73000000 😱

JaneHare · 29/01/2019 22:45

Yes, £73m and MNHQ chose them as one of their charities.

A couple of years ago, MNHQ did ask for nominations. Good set of suggestions, interesting comments about them, plenty of people saying how much the various ones caught their eye.

Wasn't enough to stop complaints about why in earth MNHQ chose this one or that one. Consultation. Damned if you do, damned if you don't...

IIRC, it was less than ceiling last time too. It doesn't seem to be something that catches the MN community. No idea why.

JaneHare · 29/01/2019 23:20

So, should MNHQ give £10k to each charity or just match donations? In which case the Princes Trust would get £146 Confused

I totally agree MN should look into donating the whole 10k anyway as I'm sure the user donations would have been higher had more people been aware of the appeals.

But if I'm right, it was 10k split the three ways rather than 10k each

lifebegins50 · 30/01/2019 07:42

Woman's Aid & Refuges are so often used by woman on MN so why not nominate a DV charity.

BojanaMumsnet · 30/01/2019 15:38

Hello all - just to say there's an update here on the Site Stuff thread about the appeal.

JaneHare · 30/01/2019 17:27

Galactic - you're right. I'd completely misread it!
As with our previous Christmas appeals, we’ll match donations up to a total of £10,000 across the three charities

Now I see why a couple of posters were saying that MNHQ weren't being generous given their pre-tax profits were £2.1 million (down on previous years due to expansion).

Oh well.

They should donate anyway, they make so much money off members.

Not hard to find charities who £10k would make an amazing difference too. Places always go for the same handful of charities (normally those with the biggest PR machine). Cancer research, princes trust, great ormond Street to name a few!
