Mumsnet Christmas Appeal - let's support three brilliant charities!

Greetings all,

We’re pleased to announce the launch of this year’s Christmas fundraiser - this year we’re raising money for the Against Malaria Foundation, Trussell Trust and the Women Support Women group at the Prince’s Trust.

As with our previous Christmas appeals, we’ll match donations up to a total of £10,000 across the three charities.

We know this is an expensive time of year, but any donation at all will be greatly appreciated and WILL make a difference.

Please have a look here for more information about the three charities. We’ll keep you updated with running totals and post updates here.

Please click on the links below to

Donate to the Against Malaria Foundation

Donate to the Trussell Trust

Donate to Women Support Women at the Prince’s Trust

Thank you for reading and for supporting our appeals - we hope you’ll be as inspired by these causes as we are.

Wishing everyone a very happy Christmas,

Justine and all of us at MNHQ Xmas Smile

Pre-tax profits down to £2.1m due to expansion and you'll match £10k?

Ouch.

Will the money just be split three ways between the charities (assuming £10k) raised, or will it be in proportion to how much people have donated to each?

Mainly just asking to give this a bit of a bump!

Happy Christmas Star

That didn't really make sense. I mean what happens if more than £10k is raised overall, how will you distribute the money?

10k? So generous....Where's your Xmas spirit MNHQ?

This is a bit late in the day isn’t it? I always do some extra donations at Christmas, but I’ve done it already.

If you download laddad song "we built this city on sausage rolls" 100% of the proceeds go to the trusses trust!

I give to the charities I support all year round, and only animal ones I'm afraid as I find those are the ones needing most help

That's what I thought. I had to double check the OP date, as I thought it strange that a Christmas fundraiser would be announced just 5 days before Christmas. Confused

Animal charities get one of the highest percentage of charity donations along with medical research & children's charities

It's a shame this has turned out so negatively. They seem like good causes. I've donated. Thank you Justine Star

Justine when I click the link to Prince's trust giving page, there is no mention of the women part, just generic Prince's Trust, so no indication that it's going to that project.

I’m afraid that I agree that you have announced this rather late.

Please can you advise when the collections close? May I suggest it runs until at least Jan 31st so that people have had another pay day/received Christmas present money and generally to give it a good chance of getting to £10k.

I seem to recall it hasn’t reached £10k in previous years when I think it was announced earlier in December?

It’s such an efficient way of people giving to charity due to MN matching it, it would be a shame to not give it a good chance.

Sorry but I agree that this has come too late and I have already given to my normal charities.

Maybe MNHQ are feeling generous and could donate the £10k anyway?

“Maybe MNHQ are feeling generous and could donate the £10k anyway?“

Spot on idea SilverySurfer.

It's always nice to give to those in need but as others have already said it is quite late in the game. I concur with pp and ask: Would MNHQ be willing to evenly split £10k between the charities mentioned?

Report
timeisnotaline · 21/12/2018 22:55

Agree it’s late in the day and yes the 10k may not be a lot but... someone I really don’t like supports one of the uks biggest food banks so I won’t? Bugger the hungry people, he’s a horrible person. Maybe if running the charity was a 3 person team but it’s a little bigger than that... Any excuse hey?

10k is 0.5% of £2M therefore an equal contribution from a 20k salary would be £100 so I think that is quite generous.

Report
peakSafeSpace · 22/12/2018 02:41

@XmasPostmanBos

But that's after expenditures such as expansion.

I think a better analogy would be a family adding an extension, going on holiday and hiring a new nanny. They then have £20k left over at the end of the year ...

I do miss the mumsnet secret santa though, it was so nice to see all the messages of thanks, and to open a surprise gift myself one year that was a huge box of goodies.

@JustineMumsnet can you clarify the point I made upthread when you are back in the Towers? This affects whether I give to the Prince's trust or not.

@1234hello This is a great idea. We were later than planned launching the appeal so we will keep it open until 31st January.

@spongebobjudgeypants I'm just checking for you how the women supporting women initiative works. I'll get back to you when I've heard back (probably Christmas Eve now).

In answer to the question about matching donations, in the past we have always matched the money each charity raises.

Hope this helps for now and let us know any other questions you have (we'll answer them as quickly as we can between mince pies and last minute wrapping).

@AnnaCMumsnet

Thanks for the posts, I think we know that in the past you have match donations. The question was whether you would donate the £10k anyway as a gesture of goodwill? It’s presumably been accrued/budgeted for already?
