To be sick to death of cake smashes?

I am so sick of this strange new phenomenon. It might even be worse than baby showers, at least you don't normally get people sending a million photos of those! What a ridiculous American (no doubt) thing to do - waste of cake, fake set-up pictures, expensive clothes bought specifically to be ruined...... ok rant over!

Ah let them smash cake.

One less sponge for people to scoff is hardly going to hurt in the middle of an obesity crisis.

Please forgive me for the potato printing my 2 year old did this week

orangecushion · 30/01/2019 20:06

its not about the cake or obesity, its about a disgustingly wasteful society and telling kids that its fun to destroy and waste food.

Sparklingbrook · 30/01/2019 20:06

How can you scroll past a picture on someone's wall?

Pia77 · 30/01/2019 20:45

Aside from the fact that the whole thing is ridiculous - I have issues with the word ‘smash’ used in this context... if you strike or plunge-into or even just quite angrily break-up a cake, it does not ‘smash’. Smash is just the wrong word. Whatever the f*ck a cake does when you attack it violently it does not smash. Windows and vases and things made from brittle materials smash. Cake does something else... it does not smash.
It’s been a long day at work... now why for the love of god am I contemplating this on-line???

Nottodaymavis1982 · 30/01/2019 21:46

Cake smooth,maybe Pia?
I hate the cake smash thing, I just don't get it?! I used to spend most of my time trying to avoid my small child from putting food everywhere, not encourage it.
Having said that, if other people want to waste their time and their cake, so be it

Sparklingbrook · 30/01/2019 21:48

Cake trash may be more apt.

beela · 30/01/2019 22:13

Curiosity got the better of me and I googled adult cake smashes. Wtaf??

manicmij · 30/01/2019 22:18

I'm getting to the stage I can't be bothered with wedding photos and all the palaver folk go to when the couple have lived together for years, had children. Why bother, they have done everything folk used to wait to be married for. Complete waste of time and money, considering its the only traditional part of marriage folk accept. Nothing to do with the dressing up and one upmanship. Is there a wedding cake smash craze?

noenergy · 30/01/2019 22:18

Such a waste of a cake when so many people in the world are living in poverty, whoever created this trend is an idiot.

fancynancyclancy · 30/01/2019 22:20

planespotting 👍🏼🤣

I agree. I find the idea of encouraging small children to deliberately break something really offensive.

fancynancyclancy · 30/01/2019 22:25

What’s not to like?

To be sick to death of cake smashes?
cricketmum84 · 30/01/2019 22:30

Total waste of cake. Unforgivable imo 😂

sharpstick · 30/01/2019 22:32

Hate the whole idea. I had no idea other people also felt so strongly Grin

Tacky, wasteful and a complete lack of respect for the work that goes into the cake. I understand that the cake maker will probably be aware of how the cake will be used, but if I were a cake maker myself there is no way I would provide cakes for smashes on principle, sorry!

pictish · 30/01/2019 22:41

I think people fall into two categories. Those who find photos of babies with food smeared on their faces cute and those who...don’t.

Cake smash photos are for the first lot. I fall into the second category.

pictish · 30/01/2019 22:42

fancy - that’s grotesque! Eurgghh. Ha ha! Grin

Platypusfattypus · 30/01/2019 22:49

See I like pictures of babies with food on their face. I just not a fan of these staged ones.

aariah08 · 30/01/2019 22:52

Oh come on, don’t be such party poopers. It’s harmless fun! If you don’t like it don’t do it. And if for some reason you find it so offensive unfriendly or unblock or something! For crying oylut loud. I find people that judge others far more frustrating 😤

Cautionsharpblade · 30/01/2019 23:10

Cake maker here. Fucking hate them.

I’ve only made one and having very carefully catered for all the baby’s allergies, the mother said the kid came out in hives when she got frosting on her skin. No shit? Smearing yourself in sugar and fat is really uncomfortable. It brings me out in a rash too and I don’t have the soft skin of a one year old.

Survivedanotherday · 30/01/2019 23:30

It is desperately tacky but not nearly as tacky as a trash the dress photo shoot!

1forAll74 · 31/01/2019 02:32

I just never wan't to see anyone's photo's on social media, of things they do in their lives. Its all got well past boring these days.

In the village where I live, there is a merry set of people, who are always posting photo's of a sunset ,or snow whatever, taken from their garden, like we can all see the same things from our own gardens !!

I also don't understand why people post photo's of food on their plates when they go out to eat. Its nonsense to me.

aariah08 · 31/01/2019 03:14

@1forAll74 why on earth are you on social media then? Delete it if you find it so bloody frustrating!!

YourFly · 31/01/2019 03:25

What's a gender reveal? Do I even want to ask!

Its when they reveal the gender.

Moogie55 · 31/01/2019 04:17

I am an American and had never heard of a cake smash until this thread. When I was pregnant 42 years ago they couldn't tell us what gender our baby was until it was born. When my son had his first bday we had two cakes the same except one was a standard two layer decorated for the adults and a cupcake size for my son. We gave him a spoon to eat his with sitting in his high-chair while we all ate our pieces at the same time. I never thought of him smashing his cake, but he was a bit messy with his spoon.

Moogie55 · 31/01/2019 04:24

Oh I forgot to tell you that I made both cakes and nobody took pictures of us eating.
