To be sick to death of cake smashes?

I am so sick of this strange new phenomenon. It might even be worse than baby showers, at least you don't normally get people sending a million photos of those! What a ridiculous American (no doubt) thing to do - waste of cake, fake set-up pictures, expensive clothes bought specifically to be ruined...... ok rant over!

Shock so you don’t like it, I don’t like many thing in life and somehow I just don’t let them irate me, a unique revelation

pictish · 31/01/2019 06:36

I’m sure plenty of trivial things irritate you, Haud...just not this particular thing.

orangecushion · 31/01/2019 08:48

Sometimes its OK to judge .

Even aside from the cake itself, I just hate having so many occasions which serve no purpose other than to stage a photograph. Just seems super narcissistic. Especially when it comes to babies. If you want to share photos why not have them be photos of things you actually do with the little one rather going to such effort to stage a ridiculous scene.

Thats why I have no social media account. The whole of F.B & I.G is a haven for staged selfies & 1000s of presents under the Xmas tree.

Moogie55 - I don't think anyone has a problem with a child eating cake on their birthday, this thread is a rant about the current trend of cake smashes. It's the buying of new clothes and ordering cake to be destroyed and setting up an elaborate professional photo shoot and posting all the pics online. That's a different matter entirely.

Why thank you 😊

Pashal2 · 01/02/2019 00:49

Why bring your hatred of America into it?

Lovelyflowerstoday · 01/02/2019 01:04

This where evolution has ended up... Hmm

Rtmhwales · 01/02/2019 01:16

Why not leave American trends (baby showers, cake smashes, halloween, apparently even engagement photos..?) to the Americans then and stick with british traditions. I don't quite get this adopting of American things and then complaining about it.

BertieBotts · 01/02/2019 09:53

Right, but that's not what "a cake smash" is. A "cake smash" is literally just giving a child some cake on their birthday and finding it cute that it ends up in their hair. The American aspect if you like is the fact it has its own little name, that is a particularly American trend.

Yes of course using an entire cake/setting up a photoshoot/forcing a child to participate is tacky but that's not the definition of the word.

LadyRochfordsIcedGusset · 01/02/2019 10:41

Halloween or Samhain is not a recent American trend. It's an ancient Pagan festival of which guising is a fundamental part and originated in the British Isles and Northern France.

Soubriquet · 01/02/2019 12:33

Gosh there are some really miserable people

Parents want to capture their baby turning 1 with a lovely photo and this also tends to be the first time kids get their first taste of cake. Why not combine the two?

I love seeing all the photos. Even newborn posed ones, the gender reveals, pregnancy photos and cake smashes.

floribunda18 · 01/02/2019 12:40

I absolutely hate it. Someone has bothered to make a beautiful cake and then someone else smashes it. I don't even like cutting into cakes when they look beautiful. YANBU. So fucking tacky and wasteful. If people want to be tacky and wasteful then let them. But I am judging you, massively.

floribunda18 · 01/02/2019 12:41

I don't like pinatas either. Let's teach children to beat a donkey effigy with sticks. Horrible.

Bouledeneige · 01/02/2019 13:38

Fools and their money are easily parted.

Hen weekends, engagement shoots, gender reveals, baby showers, cake smashes.....

No wonder everyone lives in debt.

YenneferOfVengerberg · 01/02/2019 13:38

"American trends (baby showers, cake smashes, halloween, apparently even engagement photos..?) to the Americans"

FFS Halloween has been a thing in Scotland for decades. Just because it's not a part of your narrow little world doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

BirthdayKake · 01/02/2019 15:09

@Bouledeneige I have money for my gender reveal party so won't be getting into debt. It's mostly from all the wine I haven't been buying, but still. The amount of money people spend on weddings is far more insane IMO!

birdiewoof · 01/02/2019 16:22

My youngest had one, but it was free... as was his newborn shoot.... the photographer needed models ☺️ I love the pictures. He wouldn’t smash the cake 🤣 she let us take the cake and balloons home for his actual birthday the next day

ktp100 · 01/02/2019 18:26

Is it any business of yours what other people choose to do, though? Just fake smile and ignore, like the rest of the world. I'm sure friends of yours have internally eyerolled at your parenting before. S'all good. Let's get off the judgement train!

luckylavender · 01/02/2019 18:32

Never seen one. Only ever heard of it on here.

Chocolateheaven123 · 01/02/2019 21:23

Shock I just cannot get past gender reveal pizzas and lasagnas!

WTF is the world coming to? Hmm

Knittink · 01/02/2019 21:33

This. I can't get too worked up about the food waste, because tbh the amount of food wasted in cake smashes is insignificant compared with the amount wasted in other ways.

But this endless showing off, performance and event-curating on social media is just so crass. I generally like using social media. I just prefer not to befriend narcissistic twats on it.
