DH is saying it has to be 3-4 according to guidelines but I’m sure we’ve done it many times before and it’s been fine.
he’s also saying the chicken breasts all have to be thrown out (the ones we haven’t used) because they’ve been frozen for over two months.

I keep a fully stocked freezer and rotate food so use it and restock it, as I’m sure a lot of people do! I freeze on day of purchase and label with dates.

I thought he was being ridiculous at first but now I’m doubting myself - I’ve found three different “safety guidelines” lists online that all say different things so I’m just curious what the norm is for you.

Errr no, I’ve always understood it’s 3 months at the most

OftenHangry · 27/01/2019 18:44

I have mince in there since April... Blush
And I will eat it. Unless it has been defrosted there is notning wrong with it health wise

bluebell2017 · 27/01/2019 18:44

I have used meat that has been frozen for over 6 months and would do so again. Assuming it still looks and smells ok.

AudaciousCockerel · 27/01/2019 18:44

Crikey, just defrost it and smell it - if it smells fine, it’s fine! How wasteful is your DH!

JaiNotJay · 27/01/2019 18:44

I would cook mince and chicken that had been frozen that long without a second thought.

AudaciousCockerel · 27/01/2019 18:44

The chicken breasts I mean - I would just cook the mince from frozen!

Sallycinnamon17 · 27/01/2019 18:44

I wouldn’t personally, I keep frozen meat for 2 months from it’s date but we normally use it all up well before then. I’ve no idea what the guidelines are so not really helpful.

mmmgoats · 27/01/2019 18:45

Okay good. Majority is saying the same. I wouldn’t mind but he’s always the one who wants to bulk buy at costco when I point out it will take us months to use it all up!

I cooked chicken legs that had been in the freezer for about two years once they were fine but the texture was a bit rubbery I'm sure mince will be fine.?

bluebellation · 27/01/2019 18:46

Of course you can. It's been frozen, it won't have gone off. I buy an 1/8 of a cow from a farmer friend and it lasts me most of the year.

FrogFairy · 27/01/2019 18:46

It will not be toxic, at worst you may get a bit of freezer burn.

I keep meat in my freezer much longer and never had a problem.

bluebell2017 · 27/01/2019 18:47

Just looked this up out of curiosity.

According to theU.S. Department of Agriculture, food stored at 0°F (-17°C) is safe to eat indefinitely, but while it won’t make you sick, it probably won’t taste the best if left for a long time.

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 27/01/2019 18:47

It should be fine. Rancidity in the fat starts about 3 months in. 6 months is still fine, a year later probably not so good. Your DH is being daft!

CrispbuttyNo1 · 27/01/2019 18:47

I would and have.

Tootrousers · 27/01/2019 18:48

Of course it will be fine. The quality may be reduced but it can’t have gone off while frozen!

mmmgoats · 27/01/2019 18:48

So just out of interest how long would people keep mince in the freezer for and still eat it?

OP posts:
Pashazade · 27/01/2019 18:49

Pretty sure I've had mince in the freezer over a year and still used it. Really it's just that the flavour and quality degrades a bit. It's unlikely to do you any harm as long as it's cooked properly.

Jayfee · 27/01/2019 18:49

Ate 2 year old frozen liver yesterday..no problem

8 years, 10 years? indefinite really. It'll be made into chilli/ bolog. so if there is any freezer burn you wouldn't taste it anyway

Month. Year. Basically keep it there till I eventually remember it's there...
Unless your freezer malfunctions, it's safe. Or most of us would be dead by now.

Aeroflotgirl · 27/01/2019 18:51

I used 7 month mince, cooked well, very tasty bolognaise.

dementedpixie · 27/01/2019 18:52

Quality will deteriorate but it won't be dangerous to eat.

Oblomov19 · 27/01/2019 18:52

I wouldn't give it a second thought. Is that bad?

justasking111 · 27/01/2019 18:53

It will not go off, the fibres in some meats do get a bit damaged after a long time. But you will not be ill.
