AIBU to think I can cook beef mince that’s been frozen for six months?

DH is saying it has to be 3-4 according to guidelines but I’m sure we’ve done it many times before and it’s been fine.
he’s also saying the chicken breasts all have to be thrown out (the ones we haven’t used) because they’ve been frozen for over two months.

I keep a fully stocked freezer and rotate food so use it and restock it, as I’m sure a lot of people do! I freeze on day of purchase and label with dates.

I thought he was being ridiculous at first but now I’m doubting myself - I’ve found three different “safety guidelines” lists online that all say different things so I’m just curious what the norm is for you.

I've cooked things frozen that have been in there well over a year 😂. My family are all alive and well....

My freezer has "images of food" on the inside of the door showing how long stuff can be safely frozen for.

Freezing it literally suspends it in time..it doesn't deteriorate until it starts to defrost, so once you haven't had a power cut Etc it is fine indefinitely, but you may lose flavour texture after a year.
People are so wasteful.

If kept properly packaged at 17/18°C meat should keep for 12 months as a minimum.

After that the flavours may deteriorate, but it should be safe to eat almost indefinitely as long as it's been kept fully frozen all that time.

I've kept a joint for almost 2 years (forgot about it at the bottom of the freezer); so I defrosted it. It smelt fine and looked fine, so I roasted it and it was lovely. No issues at all.

I will always judge things by look, taste and smell; I rarely just go by best before/sell by dates.
I prefer to use my common sense and I've never been ill, so I must be doing something right because I'm really not that lucky.

I also believe they've recently released updated guidelines (in the usa) saying pretty much the same thing: that as long as it's been packaged correctly and kept stored at the proper freezer temp of -17/18°, meat should keep indefinitely, although flavours may weaken/deteriorate.

I've got chicken livers that have been in the freezer for over 3 years that i'm thinking of cooking this week!

Vegisgrowingwell · 27/01/2019 22:08

Goodness I pay no regard to that, would eat meat that's been in the freezer for a year without issue

I recently defrosted a big beef shoulder joint that had been in the freezer for 2 or 3 years, trimmed and diced it and made the most delicious goulash! Absolutely nothing wrong with it and just fell apart after being cooked for several hours.
