Neighbours dog has just attacked me and DD.

Have had issues with them in the past

They are elderly, with two large breed dogs (think Great Danes?). They cannot control them. Honestly the amount of times I have seen them nearly pull them over in the street/simply pull out of their grasp and go bouncing off and jumping all over people is untrue.

Was walking back from the shop and saw them coming from a distance so I stepped to the side into another neighbours driveway and next thing I know- one of them had pulled out of its owners grasp and came bounding over and knocked DD (who is just about getting confident with her toddling) over.

It was over in seconds- by the time I put the break on the pram (was stood on a slopes drive so it would of ran off into the road) and went to grab DD she was already on the floor the dog barking at her- so I kicked it to get it away, and it bit my leg.

I was furious. Owner very embarrassed an apologetic but I’ve said enough is enough and I would be contacting the police and the RSPCA.

Heaven forbid it bounded on the pram and just decided to bite my 2 week old. It would of taken her head off no doubt.

V shaken and waiting for DH to get home to call the police and RSPCA.

I’ve also messaged his daughter on Facebook

@KissingInTheRain

If you really think we should all learn about protecting our children and ourselves from dogs, I’d suggest we instead consider a ban on domestic dog ownership. A bit like a ban on the sale of fireworks: many people are responsible with them and get pleasure from them; but a minority are irresponsible and cause problems. Victims’ knowing how to deal with burns and other injuries doesn’t justify the greater risk and nuisance.

This is probably one of the most ridiculous posts I've ever read on Mumsnet. Dogs have been domestic pets for hundreds of years, and according to a PP 26% of households own a dog, which I can believe. Like it or not, dogs as pets are here to stay.

As I've said earlier, I don't own a dog and don't want to (I'm the proud owner of 4 cats), but I have friends and family who have beloved pet dogs who are well looked after and are not remotely a threat to the general public. Let's have a sensible discussion without ridiculously extreme positions on either side of the debate.

BlueSlipperSocks · 30/01/2019 21:38

Why do I prefer my dog to people? Where do I start?

First my dog doesn't expect me to make small talk about how wonderful his DC is because she picked up the Head teachers award this week.. . Followed by other parents protestations that their dc is the best because they picked up 2 head teachers awards in a month! ...yawn!

My dog is always happy to see me and as long as he is fed, exercised and petted he demands no more. As opposed to the family who always want something.

I can tell my dog anything knowing he won't go blabbing and making trouble for me, by twisting every word.

When my family are out, after a hards days work and then after meeting the demands of my family.... run me here, take me thete, im not eating that blah blah....there is no more relaxation than allowing my dog to sit with me in total calmness. He doesn't judge. He's happy just to be with me.

I have met so many lovely people as a result of taking my mutt for regular walks. People who have become firm friends. People who I love to meet up with, for short times, but wouldn't want to live with 24/7. Do you have friends you'd like to move in with?

It's that scenario of when you don't have children you can't understand the lives and problems of people who have children. Then you have children and it all becomes clear.

WTF does my social life or my relationship with my very well trained, happy, social dog have to do with this thread anyway? Are you completely bonkers??

PengAly · 30/01/2019 21:43

Alao as this thread is already insane im gonna remind people that dogs actually serve a lot of various purposes. Various medical aids, therapeutic, police force, and also there are the working dogs. So in all the hysteria about them being so dangerous maybe understand they can be more than just a pet.

anniehm · 30/01/2019 21:43

Unfortunately when you kicked the dog, you became the aggressor, they didn't bite until you provoked them kicking. The owner obviously is struggling but contacting the daughter is a far better solution than the police who will want to know why you kicked a dog who was just over enthusiastic. You obviously don't like these dogs, they pick up on this.

BlueSlipperSocks · 30/01/2019 21:55

@KissingInTheRainthats a sad truth because Staffs get bred for the wrong reasons and then they end up abandoned and nobody wants them. Loads of them get successfully rehomed, which unsurprisingly you dont seem to mention. But OBVIOUSLY you are an expert of all dogs

Exactly! Staffies are no different to any other breed. They get picked as puppies, all cute and snuggly. Nobody does anything with them and suddenly at 6 months old they become a problem - because nobody has provided the training and time they deserve, and they become a nuisance! So they are either put on gumtree as 'Free to a good home' or given to a rescue centre. Either way someone now has taken on a dog, who knows no boundaries, and is criticised every step of the way as they do their damnest to train them.

It's far easier to train and socialise a puppy than a rescue dog who has learnt no boundaries.

The problem with training a puppy is the world and his kids show no restraint in calling the cute puppy from his training - because "As my little one loves dogs". They seem to change their tune when the cute, fluffy, adorable puppy is a year old.

My problem has always been with people sabotaging training sessions. Every dog needs time and space to learn 🤬

@KissingInTheRainHow many cats or hamsters do you suppose have been ordered to be put down for causing injuries to people*

I doubt it got put down but a hamster certainly can be dangerous 😂 www.scmp.com/news/hong-kong/article/1205123/girl-11-dies-after-pet-hamster-bites-finger

PengAly · 30/01/2019 22:02

Or Staff owners
Oh now you are just being goady for the sake of it

PengAly · 30/01/2019 22:10

@KissingInTheRain stop being so insulting to @blue. Owning a pet does not make someone lack social skills.

KissingInTheRain · 30/01/2019 22:11

I doubt it got put down but a hamster certainly can be dangerous

It is true that animals can be unexpectedly dangerous. Many years ago there was a report on the telly about a peccary that had got out of a private zoo. A man was walking his three Rottweilers who sniffed it out and attacked it. The peccary killed one dog, injured one so badly it had to be put down, and chased off the third.

Go the pig!

KissingInTheRain · 30/01/2019 22:14

@KissingInTheRain stop being so insulting to @blue. Owning a pet does not make someone lack social skills.

She said she much preferred dogs to people. Her words, not mine.

PengAly · 30/01/2019 22:15

People who cling to animals for social support are really quite odd

Plenty of people who suffer with bad mental health or other difficulties reauire a licensed medical dog for support. I suppose you think they are odd too? Ive known people with austism who struggle socially but their pets help a lot- you also must think as them as odd? Think before posting. There is no need for such offensive posts.

PengAly · 30/01/2019 22:17

People who cling to animals for social support are really quite odd

And its her choice, her life. Why do you care so much? Her words dont give you a right to be insulting.

tabulahrasa · 30/01/2019 22:17

You think a staffy is more dangerous than a Great Dane?...

Really?...

missbattenburg · 30/01/2019 22:19

The 2 dogs (a rottie and a mastiff) needed stitches. Neither died. Happened in Kent.

Unless, of course, this is one of those strange scenarios where TWO peccaries have escaped in separate instances and both happed to attack rottweilers...

KissingInTheRain · 30/01/2019 22:24

PengAly

One, obviously I wasn’t talking about people who have a physical or psychological problem. I’m surprised you didn’t mention guide dogs. 🙄

Two, are you sure you don’t own a Staff?

missb

Thank you! I saw that report about 30 years ago on the local news so to have it confirmed now is excellent. Sorry about the inaccuracies. So the peccary just mauled a Rottweiler and a mastiff? Loser!

KissingInTheRain · 30/01/2019 22:28

tabula

No, I’m sure a Great Dane is every bit as dangerous as a Staff. So many of these big dogs are dangerous. I suspect there are many more Staffs though.

PengAly · 30/01/2019 22:31

I’m surprised you didn’t mention guide dogs. 🙄

Two, are you sure you don’t own a Staff?

Guide dogs ate implied under the umbrella of "medical aid" which i stated.
No, once again, I dont own a Staff. i just hate people like you who make unnesesary judgments and assumptions on things they know nothing about. And i feel sorry for the poor Staffs in rescue shelters

Molakai · 30/01/2019 22:38

People who cling to animals for social support are really quite odd. Sorry, but they are

You're at it again Kissing . Responding to what you want to believe was written instead of what was actually written.

Nothing in Blue's post even hinted at 'clinging to an animal for social support'.

What do you achieve by trying to belittle people? You have no rational response so you mentally rewrite the post to fit your mindset and use that as a basis to throw out insults.

BlueSlipperSocks · 30/01/2019 22:41

*You made the statement, not me. Don’t start getting arsey.

Your dog doesn’t judge you or argue with you or bore you with small talk because it’s just a dog. Goldfish won’t do any of those things either.

Day to day human contact can be very difficult, can’t it? What with all those opinions, emotions and differences.

People who cling to animals for social support are really quite odd. Sorry, but they are. Like crazy cat ladies. Or Staff owners*

I have goldfish too - if that helps? 🤦‍♀️

BlueSlipperSocks · 30/01/2019 22:49

Fuck! 😱 I have a dog and a tank of goldfish (The goldfish was DS idea but I end up feeding and cleaning them). Excuse me whilst I go and boil my head!

Meanwhile in the real world the fish are alive and swimming and the dog is sleeping in his bed. The DC are in bed. The DH is in the shower and I am.preparing for another day in work tomorrow. Nobody has died and life goes on, as normal

Love it @blue 😂

Molakai · 30/01/2019 22:59

Good night Blue and Peng and all animals.

I really shouldn't have re-engaged but there have been some great posts on this bonkers thread Grin

tabulahrasa · 30/01/2019 23:00

“So many of these big dogs are dangerous“

There’s no comparison though...

Staffies aren’t a large breed, they’re medium, so 1.5 feet and weigh 2.5 stones at the top end of their range... Great Danes at the same end of their size range are early 3 feet and 13 stones.
