Best and worst place you have been on holiday to?!

My best was definitely Canada. Driving through the Rockies was an unforgettable experience and we got perfect weather and lots of lovely food and hotel stops along the way.

The worst has to be Dublin. I was really underwhelmed by it and found it crazy expensive.

Also, the IRA were very much in evidence when we went and a lot of places were off limits to the general public.

UnreasonablyPissedOff · 27/01/2019 15:45

Lonicera I was in University in Trinity College Dublin in 1988 and lived there from 1987 - 1995 and do not recall the IRA being 'very much in evidence in Dublin ' and cannot recall places in Dublin being off limits. Belfast at that time was intimidating I will grant you, I visited for the first time in 1995 and there was a lot of armed military presence on the streets. But Dublin?

MyGastIsFlabbered · 27/01/2019 15:45

My worst holiday was in Malta but to be fair I think it was the circumstances of the holiday rather than the place. I was 15. Between booking and going on the holiday my parents had split up but my dad emotionally blackmailed my mum into going. To make matters worse it was their wedding anniversary during the holiday. Truly, truly hideous fortnight and I still can't hear mention of Malta without shuddering.

Lots of fab holiday,Italy,CroatiaGreek Islands, small ones like Anti-Paros,Amorgos,Alonissos.

Worst,Turkey,loathed it.

LoniceraJaponica · 27/01/2019 15:56

We were disappointed not to see the Guinness brewery. We were only allowed in the bar. It was too long ago, so I can't remember much, but I remember following some kind of tourist trail and feeling underwhelmed by it. Also not being able to walk along the river.

ComeOnGordon · 27/01/2019 16:02

Best - Italy, Italy, Italy 🇮🇹 wherever I’ve been I’ve just loved it but especially Puglia

Worst - I’m not a fan of Dublin or London - like so many others I find them expensive and not really a representative of their country. The resort we stayed in in Gran Canaria was also rubbish but we made the most of that holiday by going to nicer resorts.

Cheerymom · 27/01/2019 16:16

Not impressed by London? It is an absolute one off in terms of culture.

UnreasonablyPissedOff · 27/01/2019 16:19

Cheerymon these threads are unintentionally hilarious!

UnreasonablyPissedOff · 27/01/2019 16:19

cheerymom sorry

Whatdoiwanttohear · 27/01/2019 16:21

Puglia is lovely.

CharltonLido73 · 27/01/2019 16:28

Best:
House swap to Vancouver
Cycling 300km along the Danube from Passau to Vienna
The quiet eastern end of the Algarve - near Tavira - on the Ria Formosa national park

Worst:
A week week in Norfolk on two separate occasions

CharltonLido73 · 27/01/2019 16:29

a week week = a wet week...

Yabbers · 27/01/2019 16:30

Best was Banff, Canada. Worst was Vancouver, Canada. All part of the same trip!

Yabbers · 27/01/2019 16:35

Dundee and found things of interest in all of them.
Dundee?? I was going with it til you got to Dundee 😄

BestIsWest · 27/01/2019 16:36

Yabbers I’d agree with that. We did the same trip last year. Adored Banff, hated Vancouver.

greenybluey · 27/01/2019 16:37

Best - Argentina

Worst - kavos, Greece

XiCi · 27/01/2019 16:39

an absolute one off, how so cheerymom?

fedup2017 · 27/01/2019 16:43

Best: Italy- Venice Rome Pompeii Amalfi coast Tuscany... Loved them all but Tuscany pips it.
Worst: a wet week in a tent in Cornwall. Grim. I know I'm in a minority but I've never had a good english holiday. More expensive than taking Eurostar and a tent to Europe, we always have crappy weather in the UK and days out cost lots and packed with other people.....sea unpleasant to swim in too. Really like a day out in London or a Scottish holiday though.

FrankieHeckisinTheMiddle · 27/01/2019 16:46

I’ve been loads of places and loved most of them, was very underwhelmed by Barcelona, just don’t get the fuss.
Worst place I stayed was a thatched cottage in Taunton. It reeked of dying Labrador and it rained all week.

Clavinova · 27/01/2019 16:55

Best - Boston and New England fly drive - 2 weeks Sept/Oct. Loved the historical stuff and seafood restaurants in Boston, a few days relaxing in Cape Cod, fantastic autumn colour and mountain scenery in Vermont, New Hampshire etc. Blue skies and t-shirt weather.

Worst - Costa del Sol in August.

serenawren · 27/01/2019 17:01

Worst:
Langkawi in Malaysia. Best thing was our hotel. Everything else was terrible, fuck all to do.

Cebu, Philippines - dirty, felt unsafe and everyone stared and made things so uncomfortable.

Best:
Sri Lanka- so much to do and see, been there 5 times and have had different holidays each time. People are so friendly!

Kazakstan - exceeded expectations! Scenery and weather was unreal. People so friendly.

Japan - so different to our normality, love the food, love everything about it!

KirstyAllsoppsFatterTwin · 27/01/2019 17:05

All those saying that they do their research are probably much younger than me, and forget that it wasn't so easy to do this pre internet.

Our horrible Tunisian holiday was in 1985, and the only information I could find was from the Airtours holiday brochure and a guide book.

That's very very true. You used to get a half of very generalised info per resort, then about 1/3rd of a page per hotel, with a photo of a room and a photo of the pool. That was it. It was like Russian Roulette.

Most holiday disasters now are probably due to either not researching or having a crap budget and over-optimistic expectations.

LJdorothy · 27/01/2019 17:06

Edinburgh is a stunning city. I've never seen vomit on the pavements there and I visit regularly.
And there's plenty to do in Dundee. It has the brand new V & A, the gorgeous McManus Galleries and the Discovery Centre.
My favourite places to holiday are the Amalfi Coast, Menorca and the East Neuk of Fife.

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 27/01/2019 17:11

Best - Southern Ireland road trip (twice)
Worst - Malta

Clionba · 27/01/2019 17:15

Wow! Malta is getting a hammering on here! It's somewhere I fancy visiting - can people tell me why it's so bad?
