DH and his Brexit cupboard

Anymom · 25/01/2019 22:45

Dh has converted two of our kitchen units into his Brexit cupboard! He has filled them up with all sorts of tinned delacacies including different beans, chilli and dogs (hot!)
He's also stockpiled toilet rolls, medicines, cleaning products etc. It's all stashed away in his new Brexit cupboard, that we have been warned not to touch! I darent tell him that the dc have already been in there hunting for chocolate. They were disappointed to find numerous bags of rice and pasta but alas no chocolate. Seems he has got his priorities mixed up! 😁
AIBU to think this is unnecessary and over the top? I need help to convince him as he talking about stockpiling and filling up the freezer and I'm dreading what concoctions I will find in there! All joking aside, it is just Dh panicking isn't it? We don't really need to be stockpiling food in one of the richest countries of the world, do we?

Beast from the East last year was a wake up call.

NOT rural areas, far from it. But big depots just off the main artery motorway were affected. It showed how few bakeries and dairies were local anymore.

By day 2 the fresh veg was looking sparse at the supermarkets!

And it seemed to take a while to get back to normal.

PoutySprout · 27/01/2019 23:29

Hang on. We’re going to rebuild our economy with tea and jam aren’t we? Surely the Govt didn’t promise something without doing the required calculations and preparations?! 😱

Graphista · 27/01/2019 23:33

"Excellent Brexit Burns verses." I know! Love it!

I'm always worried westministenders is too well established for me to just join in.

"Yes, we grow some sugar beet in this country. Enough to supply all our sugar requirements? I'm betting no." Exactly!

And thank you Blush

Constructive and interesting posts are welcomed at all times on the Westministender threads Flowers - inCLUDing from Leavers (provided they're not just sound bites Wink) Grin

David Davis used to work for Tate & Lyle, which imports Caribbean sugar. That's why he is such a fervent Brexiter, being against the protection of the EU sugar industry.

Scandaloso · 27/01/2019 23:51

Yes the links between Belize, the sugar industry, Brexit, and various Brexit related characters (Davis, Ashcroft, Wigmore) are all a bit murky.

durgha · 27/01/2019 23:54

I live in a very Brexit town. I may forget to stock up on poo bags. (I never walk my dog through areas that children play in). I'm pissed off, but not evil.

Catsinthecupboard · 28/01/2019 00:11

Dried beans and rice work in an emergency. I put in a smoked bit of ham for flavor.
Dehydrators are inexpensive if you want friend fruit or jerky.

We lost electricity for a week. Everyone laughed at me for doing all of our laundry, they were grateful in the end.

Camp stoves and oil lamps. A tops and tails plan if there is trouble with hot water.

My ds worries about me bc I have meds that I cannot stockpile.

Emergencies and accidents are by definition unexpected so it is always good to be prepared.

AwdBovril · 28/01/2019 00:12

Graphista come & join us on the Westministenders thread. There are lots of lurkers like me, who just occasionally post (usually a somewhat obvious question, or frustrated venting...)

Catsinthecupboard · 28/01/2019 00:14

Oops. DRIED fruit, not friend

If electricity won't be a problem, I buy pineapples, mangoes, strawberries, when on sale, and freeze them in chunks that are good for smoothies. Also, frozen veg.

AwdBovril · 28/01/2019 00:22

Cats - do you have a dehydrator? Dried pineapple is the best thing ever.

llizzie · 28/01/2019 00:50

Wish we could stockpile my dh's meds for his neurological condition. He can't take substitutes. Most people with neurological conditions can't.

Fill up on vitamin E if you cannot get the meds for neurological conditions.

bellinisurge · 28/01/2019 06:12

@Graphista , those are excellent FAQs. Apart from it being a bit annoying for you personally after your work, I wish the government would put them on the gov.uk website.Wink

wildchild554 · 28/01/2019 06:20

@Graphista it is possible to make pasta and ravioli with other flour, I have done this myself, it's awkward to do, wasn't perfect but came out quite nice. Will try durum wheat version when I get a chance though and see how that turns out. However, obviously would prefer to stock dried pasta than flour and eggs to make it. :)

Belenus · 28/01/2019 06:48

we could be on the brink of a civil war!

There is the mantra that we're only ever four meals away from anarchy. And remembering the riots of 2011, sometimes we don't even need that.

Am I telling people I'm stockpiling? Of course not. I'm in an area where 70% voted out. I do not trust these people.

falcon5 · 28/01/2019 08:00

Sigh. This is not a flattering story to me. And maybe things would be different at the local farm shop but in a different time and land we had erratic food supplies.
I shopped multiple stores every day. I was also in the 1% in that country resources wise. I had standing arrangements at various places for "a bale of sugar" (a measure we used - multiple packs) and other items. These were kept under counter for me but had bugger all to do with loyalty and everything to do with me paying the person multiples of their salary a month in bribes.

BigBumandMumTum · 28/01/2019 08:04

My husband has a zero hour contract so I already have a stockpile, I think we should all have one anyway

Dillydallyalltheway · 28/01/2019 08:29

The only thing that worries me about brexit cupboards etc, is people stock piling too much medication that they might not need, leaving a shortage for people who do need it. Don’t get me wrong, I have a course of antibiotics put by “just in case “ but they are genuinely a life or death medication for me. However I really do understand people picking up extra bits and bobs because we really don’t know what is going to happen.

snoodle1 · 28/01/2019 08:41

We have a Brexit box in the garage but every time we run out of something it gets pilfered. My DD helped herself to the Cheerios we had in there this morning. Our Brexit box will be empty by the time Brexit happens.

Holidayshopping · 28/01/2019 08:43

We had been pilfering ours until Xmas time when I started to think that maybe DH had a point and wasn’t just a tin-hat wearing madman. Now, we don’t and I make sure I buy plenty. It’s well organised and we sort and rotate regularly.

TheElementsSong · 28/01/2019 08:48

@Graphista loving your work on this thread Flowers come and check out Westministenders. It's not all serious. There's swearing, and pets.

TeeBee · 28/01/2019 08:54

I've got a Russia cupboard. I love your husband. A man actually bloody taking control and planning for once.

Mistigri · 28/01/2019 08:56

people stock piling too much medication that they might not need, leaving a shortage for people who do need it.

There are a number of risks associated with stockpiling medicines, including risks to patient safety if medicines are not stored appropriately and a high risk of waste and cost to the NHS.

Nevertheless from an individual point of view, stockpiling is still rational if you rely on medicines and think supplies are at risk. It's the government's job to reassure people about this, but they won't, because they can't be certain that supplies are secure.

WaxMyBalls · 28/01/2019 09:46

It does worry me, but I don't know what else people who rely on medication are supposed to do given the lack of alternative provision that's been made for 29th March and thereafter. In my house none of us are in that position, and I'm grateful for that.

Libloo · 28/01/2019 10:53

What on earth are you doing? Feeding each other's fears sure it may be uncomfortable at first, most things are how on earth would the country have survived two world wars with attitudes like this, if the men and woman who gave their lives for Great Britain could read this they would be so sad . Come on everyone lets put the Great back into Britain and make them proud of us, isn't this what they sacrificed them selves for the world trade will be our oyster, you'll see 😀 No issue with you Stocking your cupbords if that's what you want to do for a few bumps in the road but the shortage of items will be a result from people stockpiling not brexit take heart!
