DH and his Brexit cupboard

Anymom · 25/01/2019 22:45

Dh has converted two of our kitchen units into his Brexit cupboard! He has filled them up with all sorts of tinned delacacies including different beans, chilli and dogs (hot!)
He's also stockpiled toilet rolls, medicines, cleaning products etc. It's all stashed away in his new Brexit cupboard, that we have been warned not to touch! I darent tell him that the dc have already been in there hunting for chocolate. They were disappointed to find numerous bags of rice and pasta but alas no chocolate. Seems he has got his priorities mixed up! 😁
AIBU to think this is unnecessary and over the top? I need help to convince him as he talking about stockpiling and filling up the freezer and I'm dreading what concoctions I will find in there! All joking aside, it is just Dh panicking isn't it? We don't really need to be stockpiling food in one of the richest countries of the world, do we?

Ah yes that makes sense, thank you.

Scandaloso · 27/01/2019 15:45

Aha! Top tip, Talk1n. I am going to try that! I'm all about maximising space at the moment.

Thank God for the internet, helping me plunder other people's ideas Grin

THis is my go to site for food storage ideas ....

Are you all dab hands at bread making here?

Or do you have loads frozen? Or just don’t eat much?

Empty bread shelves is always the first thing I notice when the snow starts falling!

Scandaloso · 27/01/2019 16:12

I've bought a few Wright's bread mixes but I've never tried them before so no idea what they'll be like. I'm also planning to buy a few packets of those long life part baked baguettes. They're pretty nice and have a shelf life of a couple of months.

I make Irish brown bread/soda bread which is simplicity itself because there's no yeast, or proving, or kneading involved. You just mix everything and fling it in the oven.

Scandaloso · 27/01/2019 16:13

Thanks for that link, Talk1n. I'm going to turn into a freezer geek! Grin

Oysterbabe · 27/01/2019 16:13

I love making bread. I find it really relaxing and the house smells amazing.

Ollivander84 · 27/01/2019 16:14

I can't be the only person that usually has a lot in anyway can I? I mean a couple of cupboards of food, not rooms full type thing!
The freezer is full anyway and that's fairly usual for me, if I use all of X/Y/Z then I buy more on the next shop, same with the cupboards
I live alone so I figure if I was unwell or something happened it's sensible to have a couple of weeks worth of food in

WickedGoodDoge · 27/01/2019 16:15

I love making bread! We don't eat that much so I don't make it as often as I'd like. I don't have a bread maker and just knead by hand.

You can get fresh yeast from the supermarket and freeze it. It tends to be a bit more reliable than he dried yeast I'd you've had problems in the past.

Ta1kinPeace · 27/01/2019 16:16

holiday
you do not need a bread mix
just flour, water, sachets of dried yeast, sugar and a bit of fat and salt.
Use a bread maker
or do it by hand
and take out all your frustrations on the dough

StoorieHoose · 27/01/2019 16:39

I could only master a decent loaf using bread mixes in my bread maker. I’m going to try sodabread next although I know it won’t be as good as my granny could make

Epanoui · 27/01/2019 16:48

No knead bread is good if you are busy. I leave mine to rise overnight (make the mix last thing, it takes minutes) then cook in the morning for a fresh loaf.

bubblewire · 27/01/2019 16:55

@Epanoui do you bake it in a pot as per the link or just stick it on a baking tray?

Lovemusic33 · 27/01/2019 16:57

I love homemade bread, I don’t actually eat much bread so won’t be too bothered if there’s none on the shelves.

I have stocked up with super noodles, there about the only dry food that dd2 will eat.

Pretty sure we could survive for a couple weeks with what we already have in the house (the contents of the freezer and tinned food).

Graphista · 27/01/2019 17:18

I've not made bread in YEARS and don't feel very confident about doing so now. But we don't eat much, indeed I got so fed up recently of throwing out at least half a loaf a week I kicked myself for forgetting it can be frozen. So now there's a loaf in the freezer. We both tend to prefer crackers or having something like cous cous which takes minutes to prep.

Although I do have part baked baguettes in the cupboard from 2 Christmases ago which I was going to use with baked Camembert. We both had flu though do they never got used I need a clear out!

nicoala1 · 27/01/2019 17:21

Irish soda bread either wholemeal or white is delish, no kneading or yeast required. Gorgeous warm with real salty butter.

Buttermilk or sour milk required + bicarb soda. There are substitutes for this though in a pinch!

Scarriff · 27/01/2019 17:24

Another supporter here. Just a few imported foods. I have chocolate, flour, salt olive oil and tinned veggies. If there are no shortages then no worries.

davidbritten65 · 27/01/2019 17:24

Rather than stockpile lobby the government to extend article 50 then scrap Brexit. Brexit is a bad idea, and our children will suffer the consequences for our badly thought brexit. Once it will be hard to get back in.

paranoidmother · 27/01/2019 17:26

DH is going to stock up. I have a holiday box and Christmas box I stock up on during the year.
Am buying extra dry goods etc each week to go in the brexit cupboard.
DH works from home and I’ve reasoned that it’s only a 4 mile walk each way to work so it would do me good for the summer.
I work in a school and most of the kids come further than I do to get there so will probably not make it in if there is petrol battering going on.

SalrycLuxx · 27/01/2019 17:26

I have a bread maker. I do know how to make it by hand, but just can’t be bothered (and I can set the bread maker to run overnight).

Epanoui · 27/01/2019 17:27

@bubblewire In a pot like the link says. It is honestly really easy and utterly delicious.

FastLane46 · 27/01/2019 17:27

Not a single person I know is stockpiling so in this case I think it's an overreaction

bellinisurge · 27/01/2019 17:28

Not a single person who is stockpiling should be telling anyone they are stocking up.

bubblewire · 27/01/2019 17:29

@Epanoui thanks, am going to try it.

Tiggy321 · 27/01/2019 17:30

Surely you do not need to put supplies of eg baked beans, Jaffa cakes etc in Brexit cupboard. They are not imported. Only stuff that is imported from mainland Europe is potentially at risk. I think it’s all a stupid hype but there again I don’t really care as don’t live in UK! Soon will have another European nationality. I am v sad about Brexit and I think it’s a tragedy and disaster for UK.
