DH and his Brexit cupboard

Anymom · 25/01/2019 22:45

Dh has converted two of our kitchen units into his Brexit cupboard! He has filled them up with all sorts of tinned delacacies including different beans, chilli and dogs (hot!)
He's also stockpiled toilet rolls, medicines, cleaning products etc. It's all stashed away in his new Brexit cupboard, that we have been warned not to touch! I darent tell him that the dc have already been in there hunting for chocolate. They were disappointed to find numerous bags of rice and pasta but alas no chocolate. Seems he has got his priorities mixed up! 😁
AIBU to think this is unnecessary and over the top? I need help to convince him as he talking about stockpiling and filling up the freezer and I'm dreading what concoctions I will find in there! All joking aside, it is just Dh panicking isn't it? We don't really need to be stockpiling food in one of the richest countries of the world, do we?

All very well stocking up but what if there is no power after 29th March

I don't really get this as an argument against filling your freezer.

Any brief foray into threads about being thrifty or household management quickly yields posts praising meal-planning, bulk-buying things on offer, and batch-cooking then freezing portions. AFAIK I don't see people showing up to argue that the Credit Crunch regulars shouldn't batch cook, and should leave their freezers empty, because "What if power cuts eh eh? Oh noezzzz!"

But if you meal-plan, bulk-buy offers, batch-cook and freeze and make unflattering reference to Brexit... Hmm

@bellinisurge & smile

Thanks for the explanation. I can see how the extra work letting things through can have a knock on effect and possible slow things down. I can see no deal being a bigger problem for things we export. At the moment, our standards are the same as the EU, and I'm not sure what extra would have to happen to those goods coming here, presumably in the short term they would just be allowed to pass through unchecked. It would prevent any dealys maybe.

I've only got a small freezer but am batch cooking and filling it up. Seems obvious I suppose but you can fit a lot more in if you freeze your food flat like this. I'm no domestic goddess so this hadn't occurred to me until I saw it on someone's blog. Previously I'd just been whacking stuff into bags and flinging it into the freezer any old way.

@MeganJPerry - I'm confused as to how a no deal would result in food and meds not getting into the UK? I assumed the only people who can stop goods entering the UK, is UK customs, and I cant see them doing that.

The choice they have under WTO rules is to wave everything through, regardless of origin, or wave nothing through, as if trading under WTO rules, you cannot treat members differently. Do you really think it is a good idea to let anything and everything in without checks?

sixnearlyseven · 27/01/2019 14:12

Surely there s no chance at all of need it causing problems with electricity?

Scandal - I remember this. It was a Jamie Oliver tip Smile

WickedGoodDoge · 27/01/2019 14:22

DH scoffed at me this afternoon. I told him I will not share any of my baked goods post Brexit apocalypse with anyone who scoffs!

borntobequiet · 27/01/2019 14:29

Quite right. Any form of scoffing is out of order as far as baked goods are concerned.

WaxMyBalls · 27/01/2019 14:30

Most of our power comes through pipelines, so aside from NI where there may well be outages, I don't think an issue is that likely. Not unless there is much wider unrest anyway. Whereas if we did crash out with no deal, as things stand at least, some disruption to supply chains would be near enough certain.

Aftereights91 · 27/01/2019 14:46

What all you people who are scoffing fail to realise is that even if supplies are only slightly affected, you will no doubt get people panic buying as soon as they realise there's less food in the shops. That then leaves even less food for you to buy. It's common sense

RuggerHug · 27/01/2019 14:47

MeganJPerry also remember, no deal is essentially no contract. Even if UK border says 'let everything in, wave them through, no time for checks' who's going to send it? Because they won't get paid. Or send their drivers into chaos. It would be humanitarian aid at best if it happens.

SwimmingJustKeepSwimming · 27/01/2019 14:59

You just pour the food into a freezer bag, seal it, lay it flat, and smush it until it's evenly distributed throughout the bag. I then put it into the freezer on a little baking tray and once it's frozen and labelled stack it with the rest of the bags.

Whatdoiwanttohear · 27/01/2019 15:20

Surely the lorries aren't checked through now hence why it's so seemless? The migrants jumping on to lorries is a massive headache and presume no different if no deal?

Threefaries · 27/01/2019 15:21

These are my usual stockpiling habits. For once I feel normal.

ClanoftheCaveBear · 27/01/2019 15:22

I’ve told DH if he laughs at my Brexit cupboard I’ll ration his loo roll Grin

Ta1kinPeace · 27/01/2019 15:22

Whatdo
Surely the lorries aren't checked through now hence why it's so seemless?
The lorries ARE checked for people
but the goods in them are not checked as there are no duties / VAT to pay
If tariffs come back it will be like pre 1992
and shops were very different back then

Ta1kinPeace · 27/01/2019 15:23

Scandaloso
Do you know the trick for freezing dry things .... fill the bag then close it almost, use a straw to suck the air out and then seal it .... makes things freeze quicker and take up less space
