DH and his Brexit cupboard

Anymom · 25/01/2019 22:45

Dh has converted two of our kitchen units into his Brexit cupboard! He has filled them up with all sorts of tinned delacacies including different beans, chilli and dogs (hot!)
He's also stockpiled toilet rolls, medicines, cleaning products etc. It's all stashed away in his new Brexit cupboard, that we have been warned not to touch! I darent tell him that the dc have already been in there hunting for chocolate. They were disappointed to find numerous bags of rice and pasta but alas no chocolate. Seems he has got his priorities mixed up! 😁
AIBU to think this is unnecessary and over the top? I need help to convince him as he talking about stockpiling and filling up the freezer and I'm dreading what concoctions I will find in there! All joking aside, it is just Dh panicking isn't it? We don't really need to be stockpiling food in one of the richest countries of the world, do we?

@PoutySprout

There is always plenty of Welsh Lamb in Sainsbo's etc. here in my part of Wales, to be fair.

pointythings · 26/01/2019 13:28

I currently have enough in my stores to feed the three of us for about 3 weeks and am keeping stocks at that level. Have started upping stocks of shampoo, sanpro, painkillers. It's all stuff with a long shelf life that we would use anyway. I would love to be wrong and see how brilliant everything is after a No Deal Brexit, but having worked in the background in the runup to Y2K I'd rather be sensible.

bubblewire · 26/01/2019 13:28

Anyway, I too have a little Brexit cupboard. It really can't do any harm.

loobylou10 · 26/01/2019 13:30

You'll be ok then won't you supersop60. Stocking up doesn't cause shortages by the way, it's panic buying that does that.

Buteo · 26/01/2019 13:32

loo roll and batteries being oft mentioned, when in fact we do make them here in the uk.

Ummm, where are the raw materials from? That loo roll manufacturer linked imports its wood pulp from Sweden.

thebabysmellsofpooagain · 26/01/2019 13:34

@supersop60 that's not true.

If/when the shtf it will actually be people like you who are causing the shortages by rushing out to fill your cupboards. Our cupboards are already full so we have no need to go to the supermarket and join in a bun fight for a loaf of bread. Same as a few years back with the petrol shortages. I filled my tank up, and topped up where I could, whereas people who weren't prepared dashes out to be local filling station causing queues and general mayhem.

I have a small DC and, no matter what, my child will not suffer due to something that is totally beyond their control. As their mother, there is something I can do to reasonably lessen the impact, whether they understand what is happening or not.

Fail to plan, plan to fail.

bubblewire · 26/01/2019 13:34

@supersop60 is that true though? If people are just gradually buying more stuff week on week why would there be issues?

For example if sales of tinned toms are up one week, the Supermarkets will just get more in as there are no current supply issues. It's only when there are shortages of supplies of tinned toms and everyone at once rushes to the shops and panic buys that there are problems. Stockpiling now when supplies are plentiful means fewer people will do this?

bubblewire · 26/01/2019 13:36

Cross posted with thebabysmellsofpooagain!

borntobequiet · 26/01/2019 13:37

The wood pulp for the UK made bog roll upthread comes from Sweden. It says so in the article.

@bubblewire no worries, at least we're singing from the same hymn sheet anyway!

surferjet · 26/01/2019 13:38

I’ll start panicking when the supermarket shelves are half empty - no sign of it yet in my area, no where near.
I’m not worried about starving to death.

borntobequiet · 26/01/2019 13:38

Oops X posted

EverlyNow · 26/01/2019 13:41

It’s a sensible idea, assuming it’s items you will use at some point. Maybe not so much if the stockpiling consists of pot noddles etc and you wouldn’t usually eat them!

I’ve got enough stockpiled for my family for 3/4 weeks (or longer if I ration it). Just whilst the supply chains work out kinks with delayed Customs entry.

DH initially thought I’d gone OTT, but actually it’s all food we will eat sometime over next 12 months (with the exception of the UHT milk, but that’s the only oddity)

theDudesmummy · 26/01/2019 13:44

It is absolutely not bonkers. We are not bonkers. We bought a 300l chest freezer for ourselves for Xmas and I have several shelves of larder supplies now. ONLY things we eat normally, and especially things that my picky SN child will eat. Why not? At worst (ie at best) we have smaller grocery bills in April and don't have to spend as much time at the shops.

The people saying "why rice" etc, because that does not come from the EU are spectacularly misunderstanding the situation. As are the people who think we have existing trade deals if we walk away from the EU without a deal.

I actually lean towards believing Brexit won't happen (maybe wishful thinking though) but that scenario would have its own dangers in the form of potential unrest in the short term I am glad I no longer live in a city, either way.

HoliestGoat · 26/01/2019 13:45

I'm making sure we're well stocked up on dry goods/tins etc but not going wild filling the freezer. I think it's unlikely we'll have no power but given how we frequently struggle to meet demand in the UK and our reliance on other countries, it's not inconceivable that electricity isn't available as consistently as it is now. That said, if our manufacturing is stuffed then the demand might drop...

WaxMyBalls · 26/01/2019 13:45

I doubt most people getting some extra nom perishables and toothpaste in are worried about starving to death...

theDudesmummy · 26/01/2019 13:47

I am not worried about starving to death. But I'd like to think that I would aim a little higher for my ambitions for this April (especially for my child) than just failing to die of starvation.

bubblewire · 26/01/2019 13:48

I just want to avoid going to the supermarket if there are problems. I would prefer to stay well away!

Scandaloso · 26/01/2019 13:51

Stocking up doesn't cause shortages by the way, it's panic buying that does that.

Crazy there are people dim enough to need this explaining to them. Buying a couple of extra bags a rice and a few tins of tomatoes a week is not going to empty the shelves. As you say it's panicked buying the week before Brexit that will do this.

As the cool people on Twitter say 'smh'.

PerfectlyPetty · 26/01/2019 13:51

Personally I don’t understand stocking up on things like herbs or freezing butter and cheese.

If things run out we’ll do without them for a while 🤷🏻‍♀️

If it’s horrific and there’s no food left in the UK at all then your months worth supply of dried herbs and frozen cheese won’t save you in the end 😂

Pissedoffdotcom · 26/01/2019 13:51

That's a good point bubblewire...our supermarkets are shit as is people wise. Avoiding panic buying locals sounds like a great reason to stockpile

Buteo · 26/01/2019 13:53

I’ll start panicking when the supermarket shelves are half empty

Bit late then.

- no sign of it yet in my area, no where near.

Well, have we crashed out yet?

bellinisurge · 26/01/2019 13:53

@PerfectlyPetty , well if you get a pantry buffer of extra supplies of what you actually eat, dried herbs and frozen cheese might top it off nicely and make it taste better than some grim "making do with shit you don't like but that's what's available "

PerfectlyPetty · 26/01/2019 13:57

I’ve got low standards Bellini.

I love good food but have also been known to have plain pasta or rice for dinner (quite happily) 🤷🏻‍♀️

I’m not particularly bothered...we’ll all eat pretty much anything and there’s not a fussy bone in our bodies out of all 5 of us...pretty sure we won’t starve and if meals are plain or repetitive for a while then we can appreciate it all the more when things are back to normal 😊
