DH and his Brexit cupboard

Anymom · 25/01/2019 22:45

Dh has converted two of our kitchen units into his Brexit cupboard! He has filled them up with all sorts of tinned delacacies including different beans, chilli and dogs (hot!)
He's also stockpiled toilet rolls, medicines, cleaning products etc. It's all stashed away in his new Brexit cupboard, that we have been warned not to touch! I darent tell him that the dc have already been in there hunting for chocolate. They were disappointed to find numerous bags of rice and pasta but alas no chocolate. Seems he has got his priorities mixed up! 😁
AIBU to think this is unnecessary and over the top? I need help to convince him as he talking about stockpiling and filling up the freezer and I'm dreading what concoctions I will find in there! All joking aside, it is just Dh panicking isn't it? We don't really need to be stockpiling food in one of the richest countries of the world, do we?

well..maybe then there will a be resurgence in UK farming and manufacturing led by consumer demand...

a new industrial revolution ?

theredjellybean · 26/01/2019 12:58

i am a firm remainer, and not convinced that brexit will make our economy stronger but there is the possibility that for some manufacturers, brexit will improve their market share as we all have to buy british made products

Graphista · 26/01/2019 12:58

"We would be talking about babies and children (especially those whose parents already live on the poverty line) starving to death on a widespread scale within a month."

Are you aware there's ALREADY babies & children at risk of going hungry due to austerity policies? Add this to the shit pile and no I don't think it's a huge stretch.

"Pissedoff Why would the leccy go?!?" What energy company you with? Is it British? Even if it's British where do they buy it from? Because far from all the uks energy is generated IN the uk.

Lovemusic33 · 26/01/2019 12:59

Shocked at how many brexit cupboards there are 🤣

I don’t stock pile, mainly because I’m happy to eat what ever food I can lay my hands on and I’m surrounded by local producers (will be fine for meat, dairy and veg), I probably have enough food in the house to last a week or so but it’s just stuff the kids don’t like.

PoutySprout · 26/01/2019 12:59

Shouldn’t take more than 10 mins to implement that.

Next up, training doctors to be qualified in 3 weeks.

thebabysmellsofpooagain · 26/01/2019 12:59

@theredjellybean that's all well and good but it won't happen overnight.

RosemarysBush · 26/01/2019 12:59

Yes, theredjellybean, it COULD be very good for our farmers/producers(and the environment), if they are able to supply goods cheaper than from the EU. However, it will take time to build up to being able to rely more on locally grown products so in the short term it makes sense for everyone to stock up a little.

drspouse · 26/01/2019 13:01

thered do you actually understand how the EU works?

WickedGoodDoge · 26/01/2019 13:01

I grew up in rural New England so am well used to stockpiling in anticipation of being snowed in for a week so prepping comes naturally to me. Grin

I tend to have lots of basics in anyway so we’ll be able to live off homemade bread, brownies, cornbread and chocolate chip cookies for quite a long time, but am a bit concerned about my dog so bought an extra 10kg bad of dog food for him (allergies so it needs to be a specific type) which will last a good two months.

DH thinks I’m utterly mad. Grin

thebabysmellsofpooagain · 26/01/2019 13:01

@PoutySprout 😂😂 my thoughts exactly!

Ladyoftheloch · 26/01/2019 13:02

It’s impossible to say whether it’s needed or not. You might be very grateful for it in a few months! I wouldn’t let him take over any more space than he already has, however.

theredjellybean · 26/01/2019 13:02

i didnt say it would all happen overnight...i was merely pointing out that the implication is we wont be able to get certain products, loo roll and batteries being oft mentioned, when in fact we do make them here in the uk.

i also very much agree it will take a shift in many things, not just consumers attitudes to british goods, as wages are not at levels that would support the current cost of manufacturing goods here, plus some of these items probably depend on raw materials from EU countries.

theredjellybean · 26/01/2019 13:04

drsprouse...no not particularly that well, i never said i did, i as said already was merely highlighting that the uk does make flipping loo roll.

thebabysmellsofpooagain · 26/01/2019 13:06

And if demand outstrips supply, we won't be able to get things such as loo roll and batteries. Not only that, but when they are available, there's a good chance that the prices will spike and those of us that have a tight budget to work on will be left having to go without.

drspouse · 26/01/2019 13:06

No, you said "rice isn't from the EU"

PoutySprout · 26/01/2019 13:08

Try buying Welsh lamb in Wales.

bellinisurge · 26/01/2019 13:09

The problem is @theredjellybean , the shock to society doing this in a couple of months and not making proper preparations. Which is why people should make sensible proportionate preparations for themselves now.
The impact on our country being ill prepared for this may well be catastrophic.

and a uk battery manufacturer

No use to me, as I'm in Ireland.

well maybe it will make us all start buying products produced here in the uk !
better seasonal eating of locally produced food

I saw a programme (can't remember which channel, probably Sky) where they interviewed Leave voters. One was a market gardener, most of whose produce went to the continent, he thinks he may go bust now, the other 'the biggest producer of soft fruit in the UK' who's heavily reliant on seasonal labour from Eastern European countries.

One of the things pointed out in that programme was that the year before 14,000 jobs were advertised for pickers, 14 applications were from British applicants. Who do you think does all the picking of the 'locally-produced food'?

drspouse · 26/01/2019 13:14

Anyway, our plan for food is, make our own and eat what we can get.
We will, at least, have a few of the EU workers here; the same cannot be said of imports.

Juells · 26/01/2019 13:15

...they showed fields of crops already abandoned and rotting because of the fall-off in pickers coming from Europe.

Mummyoflittledragon · 26/01/2019 13:17

I like this thread. Dh thinks I’m bonkers!

bubblewire · 26/01/2019 13:24

If you look a bit more closely @theredjellybean you will see that a lot of Shield Batteries activity is involved with distributing batteries made abroad

There is very little that Brexit won't impact on when you dig down a little.

Burpsandfustles · 26/01/2019 13:25

Baby and children and families have been going hungry throughout our history. It's got worse now but please don't forget how bad it got under the last Labour government. They admitted they 7 failed their own pledges and promises and the gap between rich and poor grew under last Labour government.

Then brown at the last minute created tax credits and that helped struggling families and helped their stats.

supersop60 · 26/01/2019 13:25

Urggh.
I haven't RTFT, sorry, just enough.
Anybody who stockpiles is contributing to potential shortages.
We've had bread and milk shortages in the past, made worse by people rushing to the supermarkets and clearing the shelves. By the time the shops had realised what was happening, and starting rationing, it was too late.
It's going to be the same. There will be enough stuff, OP. It will all be in your DHs cupboard.

Buteo · 26/01/2019 13:26

but rice ???? really, why rice ?

Depends whether you use basmati or arborio?
