Crystal wine glasses

Are crystal wine and whiskey glasses old fashioned?

OP posts:
knittingdad · 25/01/2019 21:43

Maybe. Perhaps that's a good thing for wine and whisky glasses though?

The older the wine or whisky is the better.

CoperCabana · 25/01/2019 21:45

I think they are back. But anyway are lush to hold and drink from so go for it (although don’t keep putting them in the dishwasher like I do)

BowBeau · 25/01/2019 21:49

Not necessarily. Depends on the style.

combatbarbie · 25/01/2019 21:52

Do you mean the old style square cut type? I have my grans set but the sentimental value means they are not used.

We have a set we designed ourselves 2yrs ago, gin, wine, flutes and tumblers all crystal but look modern, bloody heavy as well and terrified I'll break them so they only come out at Xmas.....I do like looking at them though Grin

Aquamarine1029 · 25/01/2019 21:52

I don't think they're old fashioned, but I would bet not too many people use them much anymore. I have a gorgeous set of crystal wine glasses but only use them on special occasions. Normally, I am not concerned if dishes and glasses get broken, but my crystal glasses are so bloody expensive I cringe to think of breaking one. For every day, I use my cheap wine glasses.

DimProblem · 25/01/2019 21:55

Crystal glass can be sleek and elegant. It can be beautiful to drink out of. Cut glass crystal is less so, in my opinion. It seems chunkier, heavier and more old fashioned.

Seniorcitizen1 · 25/01/2019 22:00

Classic not old fashioned - quality classic goods are always the best

buckeejit · 25/01/2019 22:03

I would like to invest in some!

Sexnotgender · 25/01/2019 22:05

Depends what you mean. I have both very fine crystal wine glasses and cut crystal wine glasses. Both crystal but totally different styles.

FWIW I like fine crystal for wine and cut crystal for whisky.

importantkath · 25/01/2019 22:13

I love them and aspire to own

Nacreous · 25/01/2019 22:17

I mean you can get crystal glasses that just look like wine glasses? Cut glass is probably "old fashioned" but I like it, like I like teapots and milk jugs.

Sparklesocks · 25/01/2019 22:25

if you like them you should get them Smile life’s too short!

samakita · 25/01/2019 22:31

They’re cut glass crystal and they were my mums. Just a bit worried that they were dated

OP posts:
Sparklesocks · 25/01/2019 22:33

There might be a slight retro quality to them but I would think of them as vintage rather than dated. And if they remind you of your mum it might be a nice thing to have.

SpringForEver · 25/01/2019 22:39

I have some and only tonight I was thinking it is time I sold them as they are never used any more.

SpringForEver · 25/01/2019 22:40

Just to add, they are not used as I don't entertain now, they used to be used often, not because no-one uses that kind of thing. I would if I still had guests.

tillytrotter1 · 25/01/2019 22:45

If you like something why does it matter if some consider it to be dated, are people really so desperate to be 'on trend'? I still have some beautiful cut glass crystal wine glasses and whisky tumblers, the wine glasses keep you sober as they don't hold half a bottle!

Justajot · 25/01/2019 22:47

@combatbarbie

How can you design your own? It sounds really cool.

TeeniefaeTroon · 25/01/2019 22:48

I'm drinking wine out of a crystal glass right now. My great aunt gave them to me. I've also got about 6 Crystal decanters that are not in use but I can't bear to get rid of them.

AnyFucker · 25/01/2019 22:49

I only drink my wine out of fine crystal glasses

They were passed down to me and quite old. I swear they make the wine taste better.

OhDearHowSadNeverMind · 25/01/2019 22:49

Absolutely what tillytrotter said.
'On Trend' will be tragically 'Off Trend' by the end of the year. Quality and classic design will stand the test of time.
I have Waterford Crystal glasses - whisky and wine - been in the family since the 60's. I wouldn't have anything else.

bluebump · 25/01/2019 22:52

I too am drinking wine out of a crystal wine glass tonight, I had some of my nans when she died. I was also bought some for my 40th from a relative, I quite like them.

Scandaloso · 25/01/2019 22:53

Love crystal. Cut glass and the more modern designs too. Also love a whiskey in a really heavy crystal tumbler.

Can't stand the trend for wine glasses that are like a fish bowl on a skinny stem.

samakita · 25/01/2019 22:54

Thanks for all your replies. I will keep them. I would have anyway but I think I’ll keep them for special occasions unless I’m feeling extravagant lol otherwise I’ll use my plain ones

OP posts:
AnyFucker · 25/01/2019 22:55

Don't keep them for best

Use them !
