to think that Eddie Izzard is

just another rich person trying to persuade poor people to give their hard earned money to other poor people? I've just seen him on one of these tv ads guilt tripping people into donating to a worthy cause. Whilst I can understand and sympathise with the people who need money, I can't help but think it would be better if the said Eddie Izzard put his hand in his own pocket first. rather than flouncing around in full make up and nail varnish trying to be a politician

I know - I'm totally U, aren't I?

Having blown his cover and shown his misogynistic, abusive true colours, I also wouldn't be surprised if his charity feats were rooted in narcissistic self promotion actually. Shame.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 24/01/2019 14:25

Well that post about UNICEF was an eloquent demonstration of why referendums about international organisations are a bad idea.

Did you mean mine? If so, please tell me why I'm wrong - I'd be genuinely interested.

It does get very tiresome when, instead of people actually discussing their differing opinions on a public forum or offering facts to counter another person's suggestions, they just make a smug, snide "Well, YOU'RE stupid" comment without bothering or being able to give any reasoning. It's a bit like the teenage boy who thinks it so witty, original and hilarious to respond to everything anybody asks him with "Yeah, and your mum."

I reckon someone who's run 70 marathons and raised £1.35 million for charity can't be bad.

Thats the full quote. Explaining the difference between being a transvestite and a drag queen

Is that recent though? Because he has a very different attitude these days from what I’ve seen. Some people who identify as transgender are insulted to be called transvestites.

araiwa · 24/01/2019 14:37

As stated, its from 1999, his 'dress to kill' show

ShatnersWig · 24/01/2019 14:37

@RomanyRoots said my dh saw TW start a collection for CIN, he was playing in the band, for nothing, TW was on 14k for the programme, twenty years ago.

Total and utter bollocks. He never earned anything like £14k for presenting CIN. In fact, he didn't even know he was paid for it as
a) when it first started he received a nominal payment sorted by his agent
b) a couple of years later he began a lengthy exclusivity contract with the BBC which meant he couldn't work for any other broadcaster and as such was paid an annual salary and not different amounts for different jobs
c) when he came off the exclusivity contract they did start paying him separately for each job, again organised through his agent. Once it was established he was being paid to do it, Wogan immediately came out and said "I’ve never asked for a fee and would happily do it for nothing. If I knew such a ridiculous thing was going to come out of it I wouldn’t have taken the money in the first place" and he stuck to his word and refused to accept a payment and insisted the BBC put what they would have paid him into the kitty
d) the most he received as a separate payment for presenting CIN was just over £9k

He put in £20 to start it off, sent it round all the staff and people working for nothing, when it came back he took his £20 out again, I kid you not

As the first thing you said was a pile of shit, I suspect this is a pile of shit too.

squishee · 24/01/2019 14:40

the sex/ sexuality grid

The what now? How does that work? Do we need to determine what our coordinates are?

I think EI has been an AGP since before it had a label.

OutPinked · 24/01/2019 14:41

It’s easy to be a ‘philanthropist’ when you’re a millionaire.

Oxytocindeficient · 24/01/2019 14:41

Well that’s a long time ago and you’re currently using a term he no longer identifies as. I checked. He’s transgender and identifies as having boy genes and girl genes.

Izzard also believes we should rip out urinals and let everyone use the same toilets to resolve everything in one go. That includes young girls using the same bathroom as men. Like the girls he confronted in the toilets. Yes, he confronted them after they chased him out. A grown man confronted young girls after he used female toilets while they were there, and has gone on to write about it as if he was a victim and they needed ‘educating’.

This is no hero.

Weezol · 24/01/2019 14:43

I haven't read all the comments, but if it's the advert I think it is, then it is probably because it means something to him personally since he was born in Yemen (which is what the money is being raised for)

People are many faceted, complicated things. I may think his politics and gender stuff is a load of old pony, but I can also give him credit for the marathons and the charitable things he does quietly and locally.

Not exactly sure what OP wants from this thread Hmm.

Why pick out Eddie Izzard? Surely Jeremy Irons, Olivia Colman, Ewan McGregor and others who all do exactly the same thing?

This thread is vile.

I've often thought, with these celeb fronted charity ads asking for money, that there should be a statement upfront saying "XYZ celeb has given £££££? to this cause and donated ??? hours of his/her time.

I'm sick of seeing the holier than thou celebs trying to guilt trip ordinary people with no indication that they have put their own hands in their pockets. Eddie Izzard, Olivia Coleman, Jeremy Irons, Bono et al plus many many others.

They must be in a perpetual state of excitement.envy not envygrin
Probably shouldn't have, but this made me laugh!

Notmyusual80 · 24/01/2019 15:05

My issue with “rich people” asking us normals to donate to charity is this (not sure what Eddie Izzard’s wealth is but Bono, I’m definitely looking at you) - if they really are that concerned about particular issues, why don’t they just have one house and car, rather than several, travel economy, have modest holidays etc rather than live a life of excess that in comparison to the needs of the causes they claim to care so deeply about, looks absolutely vulgar. I’m sure Bono and the like could make a huge dent in world poverty with that kind of approach!!!

TornFromTheInside · 24/01/2019 15:08

We can all say that...
I don't want to see kids starving, or suffering in any form... I COULD have a smaller TV, or a less fancy phone, or not eat out as often - it wouldn't ruin my life and it would improve theirs...

But I will have those items (as we all do in some form or other). Doesn't make us bad people, just normal.

Bluelady · 24/01/2019 15:13

Having just read the extract from the link above, I know who I feel sorry for and it's not the teenage girls who were bullies.
