Just for fun, what’s the weirdest thing which has scared your pet for no apparent reason. Tonight I learnt while walking my puppy a shadow is scary! After reassurance he’s ok, no counselling needed but wondered what others have experienced with their amazingly eccentric pets?

My greyhound really struggles to step over the smallest obstacle!

And god forbid something touches his foot whilst he is stepping over something Confused

DareDevil223 · 24/01/2019 16:17

Dcat isn't bothered by fireworks but me running the kitchen tap (has to be the kitchen tap, bath tap is fine) or tearing a piece of foil has him fleeing in terror.

I have vacuumed nearly every day for the eight years that Dcat and I have been together and he still freaks out, even after I pointed out that I only have to vacuum so often because he is so damn floofy and sheds so much.

Wouldn't be without the wee dafty though Smile

ALongHardWinter · 24/01/2019 16:41

My cat is terrified of plastic bags rustling. If she sees me pick up the roll of bin bags, she runs away. This is the cat who happily walked along a balcony wall 30 feet above a sheer drop to the ground, and has dealt with several massive house spiders (which I am terrified of).

ALongHardWinter · 24/01/2019 16:42

Forgot to say also, fireworks don't bother her in the slightest, either! Quite unusual for a cat,I'm told.

ginandnappies · 24/01/2019 16:45

My black lab is terrified of bridges. Won't go near them. Also snow, carrots and old men.

agnurse · 24/01/2019 17:35

When I was a child we had a cat named Misty who was terrified of my brother's hamster. (I'm not kidding. She was.) Mind, this was a teddy bear hamster and they are very friendly so he never attacked her or anything. One time Martin (the hamster) got out. Mom came downstairs one night to find him drinking out of the cat's water dish while Misty was cowering in fear on the steps 6 feet away!

DontBuyANewMumCashmere · 24/01/2019 17:39

I have a Staffie X who is nails. She is a big bully, has killed wild animals Sad is not scared of fireworks, dark, animals, anything.

Today she was spooked by a glove that had been left on a low post/bollard. She was really nervous and crept up to it as though it was about to attack her. Hilarious.

MyNameIsFartacus · 24/01/2019 17:51

My dog is scared of me coughing - doesn't take any notice if anybody else in the world/family has a cough she isn't bothered, but if I have a cough/cold she turns into a proper nervous wreck for the duration, akin to fireworks night. I just don't get it!

Ollivander84 · 24/01/2019 17:55

My horse is scared of blue plastic. Any other colour is fine Hmm
Also cow/zebra print rugs. Fine when a horse is wearing it, terrifying when it's on the floor or a door
See also, her own hoof - she spooked at her own hoof and then tripped over it, funny looking blades of grass, any estate agent sign that's fallen over
Lorries, tractors, an entire parade of 100 motorbikes are all fine 🤷🏽‍♀️

cricketballs3 · 24/01/2019 18:01

Another dog scared of her own farts - to be honest she doesn't fart often, but when she does she jumps up and runs away, not going anywhere she was lying when it happened for ages

EleanorAbernathy · 24/01/2019 18:08

One of our cats thinks that all electrical items must die - my epilator, hair dryer, vacuum cleaner, anything that plugs in! She doesn't run and hide though, she stays to fight to the death and repeatedly swipes the offending item as hard as she can. Grin

Our huge ginger boy is terrified of absolutely EVERYTHING. He's like He-man's cat when he's not the brave tiger - he'll jump up into my arms trembling if he hears so much as a bird singing!. Grin

MissConductUS · 24/01/2019 19:26

Our huge ginger boy is terrified of absolutely EVERYTHING

We have a male ginger cat too who is extremely shy around strangers. My MIL didn't believe he existed because it took him two years before he would show himself when she came to visit, which was about twice a month.

With any kind of bad weather at night he needs to get under the covers with mum and dad.

13Crows · 24/01/2019 19:58

My 11 month old Frenchie is frightened of the "snap, crackle, pop" from the rice crispies I eat for breakfast....

AntsDeck · 24/01/2019 21:15

Our beastie DDog is absolutely ferocious if he spies anyone in the street outside. It looks like he will break through the window in the lounge and he barks continuously until they have gone.

However; if he sees a feather, cows, horses, crows (!!!) or bikes laying on the ground, he freezes, puts his tail between his legs and has to be coaxed to move on his belly, to go past it, commando style.

Weirdly, he is also terrified of smoke - BBQ, pizza oven, frying stuff and will take himself to the farthest point away from it in the house, where he lays shaking Sad

We have had him since he was a puppy so have no idea why he is scared of smoke Confused

tor8181 · 24/01/2019 21:22

my small jack russel jump up and barks her head off if some one farts in the same room as her, even silent ones

Brigante9 · 24/01/2019 21:33

One of mine is scared of people in hats. We had a bad time in the woods one day where he just stood and barked like a lunatic at one poor bloke in a bobble hat! Then there’s the racist thing: he didn’t like Asian people and we live in a very multiracial area, so embarrassing!

The horse is scared of stuff that isn’t in the right place, so bringing him in one day, he freaked out at a pony grazing in the garden of the owner’s house. Ridiculous animal!

agnurse · 24/01/2019 21:52

Our Biggie doesn't really get scared by much - I think he's too thick to be scared by a lot of things. He did get a bit of a scare from the space heater, though. He got a little close and singed his nose slightly, then went around for a few minutes with his ears flat against his head. I said he was going, "Nope, nope, whole lotta NOPE!"

Justagirlwholovesaboy · 25/01/2019 04:15

Thank you for all your responses, makes me feel better I’m not the only one with this type of pet 😂. Today he was scared because someone left a bicycle in their garden on a known walking route. He was also scared because a cat was sat on the grass, as a pup first encounter. He does however want to meet and greet ever human possible. My favourite though was he was scared because someone had dropped a glove, was horrifying and he sprinted as far as his lead let him for home

Dog used to fart, jump as he did it, turn and smell it, then get off his bed (sofa) and walk away, all the while looking at us accusingly.

Same dog (large breed), asleep on the sofa. Friends brought their brand new puppy around- a tiny fluff ball. Dog was watching him from his bed (sofa), and pup went running towards the sofa. Dog got up on all fours on the sofa, and tried backing up against the back of the sofa but obviously he was already there, pup done a little jump and bark (yap), dog jumped that high in fright he went over the back of the sofa. He than ran to the kitchen door and shut it behind him. (Could also open the front door, go our for a wee, come in and shut the door behind him). He wouldn’t come in until pup in. Realistically Dog could have eaten Pup in one mouthful.

He’s been gone for a few years now but I still miss daft old man like crazy.

Fightingfit2019 · 25/01/2019 05:44

My other Dog was scared of thunderstorms. The dogs never came upstairs, but when there was a storm I would have to carry her up stairs (big one would sleep through it) where she would sleep on the pillow between mine and dp’s heads, and I would have to keep a hand on her until the storm passed. If I took my hand off her she would start to cry. She would just lay there shivering during and up to several hours after it had passed.

MrsGideon · 25/01/2019 09:33

My mum's friend has a Springer Spaniel who, when he gets scared, overwhelmed or a bit too excited, goes and stares at a wall for a few minutes. It's the funniest sight!

Blompitude · 25/01/2019 10:23

My huge drippy tabby was scared of me wearing an anorak that made a rustling sound. He also couldn't stand the creak the ironing board made when it was being opened out.

YoureAllABunchOfBastards · 25/01/2019 16:54

BastardPup hates anyone walking behind us. We have to stop and let them go in front. That's fun at school pick up time.

He's also terrified of an alcove in a house wall on our usual walk. It is at floor level - I think it was maybe a cellar window in the past - and he has to have a person between him and it. He also nearly killed me yesterday trying to get me between the postman's cart and him.

He is fine with our wooden floor but terrified of laminate - the snob!

His major enemy though is the yard brush. He can't decide whether to attack or run away. I sweep the patio a lot more than I used to just for the laugh

darkriver19886 · 25/01/2019 17:41

Cat bolted and ran for the hills when I cracked open a can of diet coke this morning.
