Is there anyone who just eats normally?

I can't believe the amount of threads where the OP claims to eat only a boiled spinach shake for breakfast, plain cous cous for dinner and a salmon fillet with veg for tea. With of course, only an apple as a snack in between.

Is there anyone like me who just has a bowl of cornflakes for breakfast, a meal deal for lunch and then whatever I can be arsed putting in the oven for tea? I'm beginning to wonder if I'm massively unhealthy in comparison to most or whether people are just making this up.

You can eat gluten free and dairy free and still eat really unhealthily. Gluten and dairy are not inherently unhealthy.

Good point! For me it's about 'good' dairy and gluten - e.g. Greek yoghurt with fruit rather than ice cream, and cous cous rather than a white bread roll.

I do make an incredible cherry cake and that's full of good old fashioned sugar, butter and flour so I do practice moderation! My DH would be super grumpy if he didn't have his cake fix. And I have a weakness for Tyrells crisps! But I'll have them once a month rather than every day, sorta-thing. Oh and I can murder a Thai buffet. Can you tell I love food!

It's about balance, enjoying what you eat and everyone is so different it's about what works for you. :)

Don is towering over us on her bread free pedestal while we sad obese unemployed shit parents scrabble around in the dirt for our poisonous sandwiches because we can't afford a table to eat around once we are done bleeding the NHS dry.

Unihorn · 22/01/2019 16:26

And on the subject of being dairy free, I was for 6 months because of my daughter's intolerance when breastfeeding. The first thing I did was Google unhealthy things I could eat. I was averaging 3 packs of Bourbons a week and about 4 big bars of dark chocolate. Definitely easy to be unhealthy!

marymarkle · 22/01/2019 16:26

Bread is not poison you know

TheBlob · 22/01/2019 16:27

I eat what I want. I am heavier than I was when I was 21 but so what? Today I have had porridge, a sandwich, bag of crisps and 2 biscuits. Later I am having chilli and rice and some chocolate. At weekends, I drink loads of wine and have yummy cheese. Life is too short to deprive yourself I think. I need the energy for work.

Maryjoyce · 22/01/2019 16:27

We eat proper food every day no fresh air sandwiches or shakes full of grass and we all manage to stay healthy and sensible weight though I have a farm so we all are very active.

WunderBlah · 22/01/2019 16:27

Cake for breakfast is entirely acceptable and definitely expected on birthdays. The only unwise cake would be mudcake in my book.

smallgirlproblems · 22/01/2019 16:28

so having obsessed about food to the point that I spent 6 months in hospital, and nearly died, my main aim is that my kids eat, do not have an unhealthy relationship with food, and are active. They have a wrap everyday for lunch which I guess in MN world is as bad as a sandwich so what would make me a less shitty parent? What should they have instead? (i lie DS has a school dinner 2 days, which is roast on wednesdays and pizza or breaded fish on fridays)

happydays00 · 22/01/2019 16:28

An average food day for me is:

B: brown toast, cereal or porridge
Snack: fruit
L: brown bread sandwich with meat / cheese / tuna, packet of crisps, yoghurt
D: steak, Spag Bol, pizza, homemade curry etc

I drink a lot of water and about 2-3 cups of tea/coffee.

I always keep my steps above 10,000 and still put on weight if I do much as look at a doughnut. I realise I need to eat more protein and less carbs but at this particular moment in my life I'm not so bothered.

Is breaded fish as dangerous as a sandwich?

ketteringtownfc · 22/01/2019 16:31

I had a bit of a MH crisis last year, and one thing that has come up during my recovery is food. Sounds pathetic, but I'd sort of forgotten how to feed myself properly (after ranging from borderline excessive dieting to bingeing for comfort).

I found it easiest to think back to how I ate as a kid, so a typical day would be something like:
B: cereal or toast with jam, tea. Maybe a bit of fruit or a cereal bar in the morning. Lunch would be a sandwich, crisps (or Mini Cheddars), and yoghurt or a bit of fruit. Cup of tea and a biscuit at about 3, then a cooked tea; pasta and salad, curries, stir fries, meat and two veg, the occasional pizza or takeaway.

Probably not the most nutrionally dense diet, but it was easy, balanced enough and, most importantly, allowed me to focus on getting better. Eating at regular times and not thinking about food so much were key. I'm further down the road now, but still try and apply this principle. It's good that we have access to more information about what we're eating, but fundamentally food is there to keep us alive and happy, and we shouldn't be in a constant state of panic about it.

Upthepong · 22/01/2019 16:32

I eat normally, I think!

B Porridge
L spinach pasta and pesto
D corned beef and onion pie and veg

Lts of tea drunk
snacked mid morning on a handful of pick n mix.

wombatsears · 22/01/2019 16:33

Yes - normal people!

Breakfast - 2 x cups of tea. Rarely fancy morning food unless hungover in which case fry up!

Lunch - falafel salad wraps with nice sugary and salty sriracha and mint yog dressing.

Dinner - to be beef stir fry with noodles and again, nice sugary and salty packet chow mien sauce.

Tbf we do cook most things from scratch but it’s still normal stuff like a curry or pasta bake.

wombatsears · 22/01/2019 16:34

Oh yeah...and another cup of tea!

Wenttoseainasieve · 22/01/2019 16:35

I can't believe that some people are describing what they eat as 'normal' and then describe their breakfasts of crisps, lunches of cake...that's not normal is it?!

Normal IMO would include getting 5 a day fruit and veg and eating things like cereal or porridge, eggs, meat and potato etc etc.

Is breaded fish as dangerous as a sandwich?

Of course it is! And in a sandwich? Why not just serve up a few lines of coke.

BentleyBelly · 22/01/2019 16:37

@WunderBlah I think I love you a little bit (not more than bread though)

PlumpSyrianHamster · 22/01/2019 16:37

What should they have instead?

Quinoa, kale and lentil salad, of course!

bibbitybobbityyhat · 22/01/2019 16:39

I eat 2 meals a day and do my best to have at least 5 portions of fruit and veg. Snacks are varied but I don't often have them. My portions at dinner are probably too large and I drink at least 2 bottles of wine per week ... hence my excess 2 stone. But if I were younger and more active I'd probably have a healthy bmi on what I eat.

MysweetAudrina · 22/01/2019 16:40

Breakfast: red berry porridge, skimmed milk and granola on top
Break: Tea and 2 oaty biscuits
Lunch: Veg Soup and chicken, ham, broccoli salad and cauliflower cous cous salad
Snack: coke zero and couple of handfuls of valencia almonds
Dinner: spag bol
snack: biscuits or chocolate

I could lose a stone but look ok as I do an hour powerflow yoga every morning from 7-8

marymarkle · 22/01/2019 16:41

I think there is a lot of disordered eating on those what did you eat today threads.

InMyOwnParticularIdiom · 22/01/2019 16:42

I eat normally I think! I eat quite a lot for my height but my weight is steady.

Typical day:
Breakfast: tea, fruit juice, muesli, maybe a slice of toast

Mid morning: sometimes have a soya latte or a biscuit, but not every day

Lunch: sandwich, crisps, satsuma, Diet Coke

Afternoon: as much tea as possible

Tea: bangers and mash / fish pie or shepherds pie / bolognese etc etc
Yogurt (crumble or sponge about once a week)

Drink fruit tea and the occasional hot choc in evening.

Tend to share a bottle of wine with DH once a week, might have crisps/ popcorn while watching a movie

What about a Fish finger dangerwich? I heard they’ve been know to kill on sight. I actually don’t like them, so it’s only by pure luck of taste buds I’m alive.

Charley50 · 22/01/2019 16:44

Me! And I drink sensibly!
