Is there anyone who just eats normally?

I can't believe the amount of threads where the OP claims to eat only a boiled spinach shake for breakfast, plain cous cous for dinner and a salmon fillet with veg for tea. With of course, only an apple as a snack in between.

Is there anyone like me who just has a bowl of cornflakes for breakfast, a meal deal for lunch and then whatever I can be arsed putting in the oven for tea? I'm beginning to wonder if I'm massively unhealthy in comparison to most or whether people are just making this up.

It's an old cliche, but as true today as it ever was: " just eat everything, not very much, mostly plants".

browneyes77 · 23/01/2019 22:56

I’ve never been someone who eats breakfast.

I’m just not hungry until mid morning and by that time it seems pointless as it’s nearly dinner time by then anyway.

I’ve always thought the ‘breakfast is the most important meal of the day’ thing is utter crap. Everyone is different. Some people need breakfast, some don’t.

KlutzyDraconequus · 23/01/2019 23:03

The thing is, the human body has I built systems to let you know when you should eat and when you should drink.

Too many people eat semi constantly, always nibbling on fruit, carrot sticks, breakfast bars etc.
"little and often" doesn't mean eat something every half hour.
Same as drinking, there's no need to constantly sip water and have endless teas and coffee and smoothies and God knows what.

Eat when you're hungry, eat what you like in a balanced and moderate diet.
Drink when you're thirsty, no need to ever drink at any other time.

AnotherPidgey · 23/01/2019 23:07

My diet is err... varied... Grin

Today started and finished well enough, breakfast: scrambled egg on toast, dinner: pasta (wholemeal), tomato sauce (half jar, half passata) courgette, peppers, frankfurters. Lunch didn't really happen due to a 10 mile run so for easy energy and not to upset a touchy system I was fuelled by a banana, a bag of crisps, a red bull and a couple of gels on the run. Yesterday's was a more orthodox beans on toast Wink

I'm probably lacking in the veg department. Some meals are from scratch. Others like tonight are quick and functional. Sometimes quick and lazy on a ferrying around night.

I like food, but it has to fit in with life.

Sowing747 · 23/01/2019 23:21

I eat really healthy food almost everyday but then probably ruin it with a bottle of wine and about 8 cigarettes once the DCs are in bed! 😇

Sowing747 · 23/01/2019 23:22

I know many people like me...

Mummybear80 · 23/01/2019 23:31

Love this thread Grin said as I'm munching my nightly cheese toastie,

I'm 5'7 and 9st, I eat when I'm hungry and don't eat when I'm not hungry, have three girls who keep me busy and I'm a riding instructor and yard manager..but I know when the weight starts creeping on so I just stop eating crap for a while (usually January Blush)

I don't have a planned meal, but we always have a hearty dinner, I'm from Glasgow and my parents were always skint but you always had a "good meal" and that's the way I've carried on with myself, changed it a wee bit so the girls aren't stuck in the same thinking as obviously times have changed but they don't go and snack on shit, but they do enjoy food the same as I do, and enjoy "shit food " in moderation Grin

Bugger this "spinach for breakfast" and a "slither of cheese with a crackerbread" nonsense.

Life isn't a "trial run" you get one shot at it...so bloody well enjoy it is the way I see things, nothing will come between me and my cheese and jalapeño toasties Grin

Oh and apologies to anyone who enjoys the spinach or the like, I don't want to be getting cried down, ( but I do take criticism ) I'm just saying it as it is for me and meaning no harm or disrespect to anyone else Smile

Sowing747 · 23/01/2019 23:32

Quite a few posters on here seem to have breakfast, lunch, dinner and then supper.

What and when is 'supper'? I've never heard of that - dinner is the last meal I'll eat.

WunderBlah · 23/01/2019 23:35

Supper is a light snackish meal after or instead of dinner. So if you eat dinner with kids at 5pm you might have a toastie for supper at 830 or 9pm.

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 23/01/2019 23:36

So much food is based around wheat. Growing up, we didn’t have pasta; we ate potatoes. Porridge. Maybe a sandwich at lunch. But most “normal” diets arebread and pasta based. I think is overlaid of gluten and carbs. But if you are healthy and of a Normal weight, knock yourself out

I think I eat “normally” if I lived 60 years ago! Maybe eggs and an apple for
breakfast. A proper lunch of soup or baked potato or salad with fish. Dinner is meat and three veg.

KissingInTheRain · 23/01/2019 23:37

Eat when you're hungry, eat what you like in a balanced and moderate diet.
Drink when you're thirsty, no need to ever drink at any other time.

That’s it, in a nutshell.

But somebody will be along soon enough to tell us that some people can’t tell the difference between thirst and hunger. Another myth.

Bloodybridget · 23/01/2019 23:38

I sometimes post on "what have you eaten today" threads, but certainly not to show how pure and mindful my eating habits are - I've invariably had much more than anyone else, and plenty of carbs/gluten/dairy/processed meat/sugar.

Foxandthehound · 24/01/2019 00:47

Today I had:
Breakfast - 4 slices of toast Blush
Lunch - 5 chicken selects and a milkshake from McDonald's.
Dinner- a chicken and mushroom pasty.

I'm a healthy weight. McDonald's is usually a rarity

cannotmakemymindup · 24/01/2019 01:04

Love all these normal food comments. It's definitely about eating only in hunger, to the point of being full - not stuffed, eating everything nothing is bad, dirty or guilty but all in moderation.

So many people I know yoyo diet and do terribly out of it. Makes me sad. We try to eat real food in this house but of course there's some beige!

So today I didn't eat breakfast as I didn't have the time.
Lunch homemade bacon and potato soup and toast
Dinner toast and homemade jam
Supper was 1/4 Nandos chicken and z buttery jacket potato
So I still feel I did three meals.

Adversecamber22 · 24/01/2019 02:15

My day today
Danish pastry
Porridge with banana
Crispy pork with jasmine rice and a six types veg stir fried in soy sauce, garlic and ginger.

I think my diet is quite healthy, I eat all food groups, I don’t have a sweet tooth at all My mate gave me the danish for breakfast.

maddiemookins16mum · 24/01/2019 06:51

I secretly looked at the lunches my work colleagues had yesterday (we were all on the same table).
Me - ham, salad sandwich, cheese and onion crisps.
A - cream crackers with cheese spread
B - tin of tomato soup
C - tin of Minestrine soup
D - chicken and salad wrap, muller yoghurt
E - cheese sandwich, packet of Quavers
F - tub of pasta stuff from the One Stop across the road
G - pot noodle
Not a artichoke heart, kale or organic couscous in sight.
That’s as normal as it gets round these parts.

Peanutss · 24/01/2019 06:56

I had a lemon drizzle tart yesterday from the bakery. Is that okay because it was homemade by the baker?

Not a artichoke heart, kale or organic couscous in sight.

Location is significant.
I live in very affluent south east town. My friends, colleagues - very health conscious. When friends and I have our monthly book club lunch we each cater for the group - and it’s salads, salmon, quinoa, kale.
It’s all so delicious. We are all fun attendees (you can’t swing a cat for all the gyms / health studios / yoga centres etc in town).
Location important is what I’m trying to say!

Kikipost · 24/01/2019 07:15

Fun should read gym

Kikipost · 24/01/2019 07:16

I have zero judgment of different diets but I do wonder how people actually feel when they’re diet is mainly bread, crisps etc. I wonder about their bowel movements! And energy levels

Thepenguinofbeakiness · 24/01/2019 07:36

Yesterday breakfast was chocolate mug cake and coffee, lunch was pesto on toast with a sprinkle of cheese, and dinner was half a bowl of stew like soup and half a slice of bread.

Now the important bit, the mug cake was homemade; I'm not on any restrictive diet, I just eat what I fancy, I don't tend to snack and don't overeat because social media states you need huge portions or you'll starve.

Bugger this "spinach for breakfast" and a "slither of cheese with a crackerbread" nonsense.

I really like a few ryvita cracker thins with a pate or cream cheese and cucumber for lunch, I'd happily eat that most days but I may be odd Hmm

MiniMaxi · 24/01/2019 07:38

I love this thread! Also amazed at how many people eat crisps for breakfast - not judging, it just never would have occurred to me!

Typical day for me:

B: toast, pb & jam x2

L: depends what’s in the work canteen - otherwise I’ll pop out to get a falafel wrap, soup and a toastie, or similar.

D: usually sizeable as DH doesn’t eat much in the day. Some combo of meat / veg / carbs usually.

Plus snacks. I love snacks! (Banana, trail mix, piece of toast)

StellaRockafella · 24/01/2019 07:47

KlutzyDraconequus That's interesting, thank you!

BSE was a massive part of my childhood and I became a vegetarian as a result of it. After 12 years and mostly due to various intolerances and digestion issues that made being a vegetarian really difficult, I started eating animal products again, but I decided that if they did, I wanted to know the animals had been well-cared for and fed properly. Since then I've done my very best to stick to organic eggs, meat, fish and dairy, and buy what I can from the butcher and fishmonger, people who know their suppliers, farmers and fishermen. As a PP has said, happy chickens make for tasty eggs! And I believe this is true.
So, because all this is important to me, this is why I would probably mention the fact I eat organic produce where possible.

As an aside, I'm terrified of the thought US imported meat and eggs will become part of the UK's food chain as a result of Brexit, and their methods of producing both products are questionable at best.

BadlyAgedMemes · 24/01/2019 07:49

I'm often at my hungriest in the morning, so breakfast for me is important. Not even low carbing ever eased my morning hunger. I used to try to go on without it when trying to lose weight when I was younger (mainly because I had thin friends who somehow got through with coffee until late afternoon), but I'd be all light-headed before lunch time.

My very normal to me breakfast today has been natural yoghurt with a banana chopped in.

InsanityRocks · 24/01/2019 07:50

There's been various studies that show organic produce has no provable health benefits over non organic, one of the most comprehensive was by Stanford University.

But there have been many studies to show that wildlife (including all pollinators as bees that our varied food depends on) thrive much better if the food is not sprayed with pesticides.
