Is there anyone who just eats normally?

I can't believe the amount of threads where the OP claims to eat only a boiled spinach shake for breakfast, plain cous cous for dinner and a salmon fillet with veg for tea. With of course, only an apple as a snack in between.

Is there anyone like me who just has a bowl of cornflakes for breakfast, a meal deal for lunch and then whatever I can be arsed putting in the oven for tea? I'm beginning to wonder if I'm massively unhealthy in comparison to most or whether people are just making this up.

maria did you ever watch a program called the worlds greatest diets? I think it was Iceland that won. Almost nothing is imported, and all the foods are whole. Really interesting program if you can find it! Britain was very near the bottom of the list.

MariaNovella · 23/01/2019 14:21

No - I haven’t seen it! But you are right - it sounds very consistent with my food vales system!

@MariaNovella
That sounds delicious! Can I come for dinner? Grin

I don't understand why people feel the need to demonise smoothies and kale

To be fair to the humble smoothie, I do have a machine myself and dabble from time to time. I don't have them as a meal but more like a treat in summer with lots of fresh fruit. Although am I allowed to call it fresh if it's bought from a supermarket and not organically sourced from the local farmer? I don't know anymore.

Me! I love my food and eat what I want when I want. I am a very healthy weight, never been on a diet and don’t think about my food other than when I need to eat or prepare it. I eat a bit of junk when I fancy it and good balanced meals otherwise. Love to cook and grow some of my own groceries.

I’ve got a full house this evening - there are always plenty of takers!

WendyCope · 23/01/2019 14:25

mary brown rice and vegetables is extremely healthy! It's what I eat often. I am talking about crisps, cakes and ready meals. Processed foods.

Wait until the menopause strikes... you REALLY have to cut down on processed carbs.

I am only 48, but menopause struck early, at 44. 4 years in, a gamechanger in what I eat.

marymarkle · 23/01/2019 14:26

I am in my late 50s. No I have not had to cut back on carbs. Alcohol on the otherhand I have.

notumbongo The die in Iceland has changed a lot in the last 10 years. What they sued to eat was very healthy, but pretty boring. Mainly lamb or white fish with potatoes and some veg/lichen.

MariaNovella · 23/01/2019 14:32

Factory foods and raw foods have never really agreed with me. I get inflammation from factory foods (probably from chemicals but rather than analyse it’s easier to just avoid) and digestive problems from too much raw food. However, dishes that have been simmered for hours with layers of flavour built up from caramelising meat and vegetables before slow cooking agree with me beautifully. I do think that many traditional recipes, full of root vegetables and broth, are very life affirming in multiple ways.

For everyone who is considering any catchphrase diet, anyone who says phrases like "carb free" or "processed" or "natural" or "chemical free" on a regular basis please watch this hot smart guy explain some basics Grin

Peanutss hmm, it's more that I feel (in this thread maybe!) this mocking vibe towards smoothies - if you have a blender they are the quickest thing to make; mine takes me literally less than 5 mins (that includes rinsing the blender :D
I just find it more filling than I would find toast with jam for example, though I do love toast with peanut butter and banana when I have more time for breakfast :D

WendyCope · 23/01/2019 14:34

Well then you're lucky! I am tall and slim and very healthy BMI but have to be careful not to eat too much pasta or bread. Or I get a weird skinny legs and rest of me and football stomach look.

I do not cut it out.

Anyway, I live in Spain so I have to eat paella! There are no ready meals here. Or what we could call 'takeaways'.

But maybe I should watch the red wine more... Grin

I couldn't eat what some people are saying is 'normal' on here, it's not my 'normal'

As I said, it's crap I used to eat in the 90's.

waterlego · 23/01/2019 14:35

I think I eat pretty normally, in terms of my meals, except I eat way too much sugar. 😬 I do a lot of exercise so I manage to stay a healthy weight, but I’m under no illusions that the amount of chocolate I put away is healthy.

On an average day, I will have a smoothie in the morning (purely to cram in some of my 5 a day, and because I’m never very hungry in the mornings). I have a sandwich or toastie for lunch; current obsession is feta, spring onion and sweet chilli sauce. In the evenings I eat an ordinary dinner like chilli, curry, pasta, meat or fish with vegetables, pizza... whatever. And then I snack in the evenings. 😬

WendyCope · 23/01/2019 14:35

Sorry, that was to mary

WunderBlah · 23/01/2019 14:42

dishes that have been simmered for hours with layers of flavour built up from caramelising meat and vegetables before slow cooking you mean stew?

Justanothernamechange2 · 23/01/2019 14:43

Siameasy · 23/01/2019 14:44

MariaNovella · 23/01/2019 14:56

A soup, a stew, a fricassée, a hot pot, a boeuf bourguignon, a osso bucco, a blanquette de veau... there are hundreds of variations in Western European traditional cuisines.

BeautyGoesToBenidorm · 23/01/2019 14:58

I eat healthily 90% of the time, because I do genuinely enjoy it. I wasted years on fad diets, disordered eating and frankly catastrophic alcoholism, so I gain a lot of pleasure from feeling like I'm finally taking care of my body. Today's menu is:

B: Mashed avocado with spring onions, garlic, chilli flakes and lime juice, on toasted Tesco bakery olive bloomer, with a quick-fried slice of Serrano ham, poached egg, Tabasco sauce. 2 cups of black coffee, sparkling water.

L: Grilled salmon fillet with harissa quinoa and Mediterranean veg. Herbal tea, more water.

Snack: Golden kiwi, coffee.

D: Jacket potato with beans and the Tesco Finest mini sausages I picked up off the yellow label aisle. More coffee, herbal tea, water. Some of the Aldi Moser Roth sour cherry and chilli dark chocolate.

That's pretty typical for me. Other stuff includes halloumi salad wraps with homemade hummus, jacket potato filled with mashed mackerel, horseradish sauce and spring onions with salad, paella, homemade chicken and asparagus pie, lentil and chickpea dhal, roast dinners, most things really.

I don't like sugary fizzy drinks so don't have them. I don't like cake much, but love a raisin and biscuit Yorkie or Tesco jam doughnuts (I might have an addiction to those sugary temptresses!). I drink at least 4 litres of water per day, as I'm physically active plus I run. I try to eat plenty of veg.

I don't beat myself up for eating a whole large Domino's to myself, and I love a fish finger sandwich on plastic white bread, with real salted butter (I can't bear 'spread' of any kind) and slappy cheese. The only thing that is entirely off limits for me is alcohol, as my addiction to it very nearly killed me.

IfNotNowThenWhy · 23/01/2019 15:00

It was me that said about brown rice=carbs Wendy I am most definitely peri now, and have noticed more chub round the middle, but with me it's booze and biscuits that does it. Im off the booze but have upped the biscuits to compensate..
Spain may not have takeaways in some parts but you have the Spanish hot chocolate with churros to contend with!

legolimb · 23/01/2019 15:01

No.

Haven't done for probably 30 years. Constantly on a diet/meal plan/health kick. Otherwise I would be larger than I am comfortable with.

I wish I could though.
