Is there anyone who just eats normally?

I can't believe the amount of threads where the OP claims to eat only a boiled spinach shake for breakfast, plain cous cous for dinner and a salmon fillet with veg for tea. With of course, only an apple as a snack in between.

Is there anyone like me who just has a bowl of cornflakes for breakfast, a meal deal for lunch and then whatever I can be arsed putting in the oven for tea? I'm beginning to wonder if I'm massively unhealthy in comparison to most or whether people are just making this up.

I think I eat fairly normally and non obsessively. I certainly have never calorie counted, I have tried eating paleo once before and felt very healthy on it, but long term I haven't stuck with it (but it has helped inform what will help me feel well).

Today I've had porridge, berries and honey. 2 eggs and some oatcakes with butter. A satsuma. Salmon and cream cheese bagel for lunch with a hot chocolate. Dinner was at pancake café for someone's bday, had smoked salmon and creme fraiche pancake (actually only just realised all the salmon I've consumed!) With salad. Yesterday was same breakfast only with just one egg, egg on avocado toast and some salad for lunch, spinach and paneer curry (homemade leftovers) for tea. I don't think it's particularly amazingly healthy, but it's ok. Quite expensive though! I don't usually eat quite so much avocado or salmon but I've had a few meals out for bday treats.

I can’t eat the standard diet which is bread/pasta/rice/potatoes as a staple. I wish I could but I would be about 2st overweight. These foods, along with sugar, encourage over-eating in me. I can’t just have one slice of bread. They mess with my blood sugar so much and I believe much of this is genetics.

I think when you’ve found something that works for you it’s hard to sit on your hands and not be evangelical. I try not to mention it but people do ask. Also the culture in the UK is definitely that if you’re trying to be healthy, others will assume you’re looking down on them.

I’m the first to admit that the way I eat (low carb/Keto) is not seen as the norm and it’s quite anti social but I don’t expect others to accommodate me at all and I am not “triggered” by others eating eg ice cream.

I post on those threads sometimes and I eat pretty normally!

Today I had rye toast with peanut butter for breakfast, a bag of Walkers baked salt and vinegar crisps, and three chicken thighs with cabbage and couscous for lunch. Dinner will be chicken curry. Is that acceptably normal?

Ollivander84 · 22/01/2019 17:40

Mine varies wildly
I might have a ham and pickle sandwich for lunch with some snack a jacks and a yoghurt. Or I might have a HUGE Grin salad with goats cheese and all the salad bits
Same for breakfast. Scrambled eggs or porridge or toast 🤷🏽‍♀️ depends how I feel

Peanutss · 22/01/2019 17:41

You've given me an idea for tomorrow's breakfast
itssquidstella I really like the sound of toast and PB!

What is wrong with a sandwich? Is everyone else eating special radioactive bread or something? With poisoncheese, deathlettuce and plaguetomato?

Peanutss · 22/01/2019 17:44

Yes I'm very much 'how I feel' that day.

Some days I do eat surprisingly healthy, not because I'm necessarily trying. More so in hot weather I find I actually look forward to a salad and lots of fruit. Other times I just really want fish and chips and a chocolate bar and so I don't deprive myself.

I understand that doesn't work for everyone, as I've said upthread I admire and respect people who lose weight through healthy eating and imagine it takes great will power!

I had several spoonfuls of Nutella for Elevenses today. Quite happy with my normal. Grin

CheeseAndBeans · 22/01/2019 17:46

I have had today:
Beakfast - bowl of Rice Krispies
Mid morning - 4 custard creams
Lunch - ham sandwich, bag of quavers and an apple
Afternoon - 2 finger KitKat
Dinner - will be birds eye chicken portion, cous cous, salad and coleslaw. And probably the other half of the chocolate orange I had last night!

Drank about 4 cups of tea, 2,pints of water and a can of full fat coke.

Guess everyone's "normal" is different. Sometimes I eat more/less/healthier/unhealthier. Depends on my mood, can I be arsed to cook, how much money I have that week etc!

Ollivander84 · 22/01/2019 17:46

I am a bit crap at eating veg but I make stews with loads of veg in, try and have a pack of steam veg with meals and I go through phases of eating a full bag of roasted kale a day GrinBlush
I eat a banana and some grapes daily

Peanutss · 22/01/2019 17:46

And sometimes (most weeks) we have pizza Fridays with the kids shock horror

Peanuts you should try reading some of the small pet threads. The Small Pet Police (SMPP) are even worse.

Coralnails · 22/01/2019 17:47

Op I know what you mean. I think you've got to be careful using the word normal, because everyone's normal is different.

I eat probably similar to you but I don't have meal deals very often, but I have some kind of cereal, porridge or toast for breakfast, a sandwich for lunch and then dinner is rarely anything fancy. I do cook but a roast dinner or a homemade curry is about my limitation.

Sproutsandall · 22/01/2019 17:48

Do plaguetomatoes count as one of your five a day?

BadlyAgedMemes · 22/01/2019 17:48

"Normal" is so different for different people, though, isn't it?

I have an eating disorder past, so I struggle very much with what "normal" is supposed to be, and look for healthy eating guidance to find the answer, but that "normal" is probably quite different to what many other people would find as "normal".

I've had a cheese sandwich and a salad today. As I'm currently beating back some eating disorder thoughts, the cheese sandwich is giving me guilt, and my head is telling me not to eat anything else today. But because I'm striving for that elusive "normal", I'm going to have some spaghetti bolognese later on. Maybe a glass of wine, while I'm at it. It's not a boasting thing. I'm currently overweight, because when I'm not obsessing about needing to eat too little, I'm mindlessly trying to eat away my feelings and end up binging.

Magically, with therapy, my weight has been pretty stable for some years now, though, so maybe I'm approaching "normal"?

OdeToDiazepam · 22/01/2019 17:49

Me! I've had two bits of toast and marmalade today, an orange, half a panini, a graze bar thing, a banana, a crunchie and now having pizza and chips for dinner!

Peanutss · 22/01/2019 17:50

Again, normal was not the right word for my OP I apologise!!

I understand everyone's normal is different.

OP posts:
Jakeyboy1 · 22/01/2019 17:50

I eat normally - I have to stop myself being constant.

Today -

Toast

Pitta and hummus (flash for me but trying to be healthy) ruined by chocolate and mini cheddars after

Tonight - omelette

I don't even know what half this fancy stuff is people refer to let alone buy it!

Peanutss · 22/01/2019 17:52

BadlyAgedMemes I'm sorry you're going through that Flowers

Do plaguetomatoes count as one of your five a day?

Not if they are in a SANDWICH!

OP posts:
MrsMarigold · 22/01/2019 17:53

Me too.

Breakfast: Cornflakes and a banana
Lunch: halloumi, salad wrap
Tea time: two borders chocolate covered ginger biscuits.
Supper: grilled mackerel, green salad, spuds

Asta19 · 22/01/2019 17:58

I'm not going to point any fingers but honestly I think there is a line that can be crossed between being a good parent food wise, and a controlling one. Giving them healthy meals, great. Making them feel that huge swathes of food are "off limits", not great. My mum definitely came into the latter category and the child will just grow up and rebel by eating all the crap they can!

I've spent a fair bit of time in Japan and overall their diet is really good. You see some overweight people but most are slim. But they have these desert shops where there will be a gigantic ice cream sundae with a huge wedge of cheesecake stuck in the top! Or enormous pancakes covered in fruit, chocolate sauce and cream. I'd love to go in one but I know I couldn't eat that much! They're always popular and normally full of slim women! Anyway, point being they know that moderation is the key. That is a good skill for children to learn.

DonCorleoneTheThird · 22/01/2019 17:59

And whilst yes of course, it's a public forum and so you are entitled to disagree and express that opinion, you've come on here and called people shit parents and been generally unpleasant. The only one with a superiority complex is you.

HAHAHA

the cheek of someone who started a thread designed to mock people and is trying to get approval on looking down at others who don't agree with you!

If you think it's unpleasant to have people disagreeing with you, don't start a judgmental thread. It's amazing that posters are laughing and trying to make someone feel bad when they are trying hard to give healthy food to their kids.

ShinyRuby · 22/01/2019 17:59

I do! Cereal/toast for breakfast, usually with a yogurt.
Fruit snack at work unless there's something better on offer.
Sandwich lunch or sometimes crackers, occasionally salad.
Dinner just the usual: fajitas, chilli, roast dinner, jacket potato or similar.
Do try to have 5 a day & plenty of fluids, just normal stuff including lots of tea & coffee. (& the odd Coke zero!)
Cakes, biccies, crisps if I fancy them (getting hungry now!Grin)
Average weight for height, exercise for my own enjoyment.
Really tired of seeing ridiculous posts bragging of eating next to nothing & exercising madly. Know several people with borderline eating disorders due to that crap. Competitive under eating is bloody ridiculous & I'm never taking part in it.

ScienceIsTruth · 22/01/2019 18:05

I think I eat pretty normally. During the day, I definitely eat better on the weekend, as I'm also then catering for the rest of the family (less likely to bother just for myself).

I generally have 1 or 2 slices of toast with butter (& maybe peanut butter or cheese spread) for breakfast, and although I keep meaning to have cereal, I can rarely be arsed!
On the weekend, we might have a continental style breakfast with homemade rolls/bread, soft boiled eggs, cheeses and deli meats.

Lunch is usually a homemade sandwich (cheese and pickle, or something) and a cuppa. Once or twice a week it'll be a bag of crisps or some biscuits.

Dinner is usually something homemade, but not always.

We have things such as enchiladas, pasta bake or another pasta dish, typical roast dinner, stew, soup, casseroles, mousakka, homemade pie, etc.

Probably twice a month we'll have a ready meal or a convenience meal or a takeaway.

I drink lots of tea, and will have a biscuit or a packet of crisps as a snack most days.

I always mean to eat more fruit, but don't usually manage it.

I think that's pretty normal, but who knows!
