I hate Cheshire

In light of the I hate surrey... I decided to start one for where I’ve just moved from. Moving away gave me more perspective.

Not all of Cheshire is like this, just the East of the county and closer to Manchester/Macclesfield and the illustrious “Golden Triangle”.

People in these areas, seem to me, to all be;
obsessed with interior design, spend a ridiculous amount of money on new sofas etc almost yearly
Live in fake period dwellings that are hugely massive
Drive big f off cars like a Landrover
May have a house in France
Try and do everything to appear to be upper class
attempt to Keep up with the Joneses

The funny thing is, that I went to comp school with lots of these people. They married well and now completely forget they are normal, and spend all day looking down their noses at people.

Always braying

I would take dcs to their private day school and see the huge brand new 4x4 turn up and their little “Sapphire and Penolopy” would tottle off in pristine clothing. The mums would talk about their big new extension and go for coffees etc How they are going to Florida

Everything is look at me, look at me.

Yes I am being unreasonable, but that’s life Wink

Should move further west. West cheshire is abit more muddy wellys and down to earth.

ChikiTIKI · 22/01/2019 06:56

The triangle is wilmslow, Prestbury, alderley edge.

M0reGinPlease · 22/01/2019 06:58

I'd also come on to say it's Wilmslow, Alderley and Prestbury

Tutlefru · 22/01/2019 07:17

newname waves from Nantwich. Grin

costacoffeecup · 22/01/2019 07:30

We moved to Macclesfield 30 years ago now and it was noticeably like that compared to Lancashire where we'd come from. Interesting to see it hasn't changed. I never went back after going to university at 18 and the rest of my family escaped shortly after.

Slat3 · 22/01/2019 07:34

I went to bowdon once to pick up a pram on marketplace. Wow - the houses were beyond what a normal person could ever afford!
A family member lives in Hale right near the centre & it’s lovely I’m jealous Grin

NoraLuka · 22/01/2019 07:37

Some parts of Cheshire aren't posh at all, actually quite the opposite Grin. I didn't even know Cheshire was supposed to be posh until I moved away as an adult.

wowfudge · 22/01/2019 07:41

I used to work in Hale and although there are lots of beautiful mansions houses what struck me was the oneupmanship. It must be exhausting, not to mention financially crippling for a lot of people.

Phineyj · 22/01/2019 07:43

I lived there in the 1990s and I recognise your picture. It does have the best charity shops though - stuffed with designer gear - and that sign 'To the Edge' is amusing.

bellinisurge · 22/01/2019 07:44

I live in the bit of Cheshire that Cheshire doesn't admit to.

Tattybear16 · 22/01/2019 07:45

Oh I thought this was a thread about cheese. I’ll get my coat then.

RedForShort · 22/01/2019 07:52

When i was returning home after a stay in the UK, I innocently stopped off in Chester on the way to Holyhead. All I can say is I'm not suprised people can't afford a fur coat and knickers. I'm still paying off the loan for the car parking fee.

Eminybob · 22/01/2019 07:54

I live in macc and the town itself isn’t like that, it’s really quite normal. Except on treacle market days when all the range rovers filled with Barbour jackets and hunter wellies decend from AE, Wilmslow etc. And of course around Kings at school run time.

MariaNovella · 22/01/2019 07:56

Not all people who choose private school are vulgar showoffs.

namechangedtoday15 · 22/01/2019 08:29

The assumptions that come out on threads like this are hilarious. I live in one of the places mentioned, work almost FT (so not a lady who lunches or Wannabee), not financially crippled or exhausted Grin

MotherOfMinions · 22/01/2019 08:57

I always assumed Macclesfield was a dive because of The Macc Lads. Didn't realise they were ironic Blush

Houseonahill · 22/01/2019 09:00

I used to live in chester and agree with you OP obviously not everyone can be held to this but it's not a very friendly place to live at all IME.

Crappywife · 22/01/2019 09:17

I’m new to my Cheshire village although I’ve lived in Cheshire all my life. I’m so surprised at some of the women my age (mid thirties) who just aren’t friendly. Don’t smile back, thank me when I hold the door or respond when I try to make polite conversation it seems to be quite common. Yet yesterday I had to kill 40 mins with my 6 month old baby and no pram and the amount of older people and younger people who chatted with me and went out of the way to help me was absolutely lovely. So there’s hope. I’m not giving up on making new friends just yet Grin

KellyanneConway · 22/01/2019 09:37

I lived in West Cheshire for a while when DCs were small and it was very similar, but with a dose of covert racism. Most people voted Tory. On the other hand, I have some lovely, down to earth friends from there so it's not all bad. I'll never ever move back there though, it's not for me.

KellyanneConway · 22/01/2019 09:38

Bellinisurge I'm guessing: Widnes, Runcorn or Warrington?

Tutlefru · 22/01/2019 09:54

Crewe Bellinsurge?

Thiswayorthatway · 22/01/2019 10:02

Macc is not a dive. More posh bits than rough bits.

agedknees · 22/01/2019 10:05

I lived in Nantwich for 8 years. It’s lovely. Loads of nice restaurants. Just up the road from Crewe - biggest dump ever.

Everanewbie · 22/01/2019 10:08

Bit of reverse snobbery i'd say. If you said that an area was littered with St George cross hanging, white van men with sit tattoos who cant keep out of the betting shop and holiday at Weston-super-mare, you'd be absolutely slaughtered on here.

FlyMayBe · 22/01/2019 10:09

I live towards Chester. It's all polo and hunting (Sad) round here. I love it. No fur coats and breakneck heels - it's too muddy at the moment Grin
