Just about to take dd to drama classes at the library, I have a book to collect from library wondering if I'm brave enough to go to w'spoons with the book and read for an hour while I wait for dd to finish her class, the library closes at 7 the drama class is 7-8 Would you think it was odd if you saw someone alone in Wetherspoons? The car park I'll park up in is in the middle of the library and w'spoons

How is it virtue signalling

Well, seeing as this is a thread about whether to go and read a book in wetherspoons and not a discussion about Tim Martin's opinion on Brexit then it does seem a bit like some posters are trying to prove just how principled they are.

BitOutOfPractice · 21/01/2019 20:49

Did it last Sunday. In a strange city. Why wouldn't you?

InspectorIkmen · 21/01/2019 20:53

Have you contacted every CEO of every product or service you use and find out their stance on Brexit is?

Not unless they're all over every single Question Time and all over the bloody media banging on and spewing out lies, half-truths and barely disguised racist bullshit, no.

Anyway - leave it now. This is not a thread about Brexit or my opinions thereof.

areyoureallysaying · 21/01/2019 20:54

I wouldn't go in a Wetherspoons, alone or with company they are rank. However I love a loner drink and often pop into a bar or cafe if I'm on my own to read. Its one of life's simple pleasures

Jsmith99 · 21/01/2019 20:56

I might try to find somewhere a bit smarter than ‘Spoons, but if there wasn’t anywhere obvious, I would happily go there. They are very, very good value

NigelsBird · 21/01/2019 20:56

No way will I set foot in another Wetherspoons as long as I live, driven the proprietor's utterly irresponsible stance on a no deal Brexit. Plus they're pretty grim places at the best of times. But yes, I would sit in a cafe or pub alone with a book, no problem whatsoever.

MaryShelley1818 · 21/01/2019 20:56

I wouldn’t even think twice about it :)

maddiemookins16mum · 21/01/2019 20:57

Only on MN would this turn into a Brexit thread, yawn.

Lozz22 · 21/01/2019 21:03

I used to go for breakfast in spoons on my own before I started work, had dinner on my own in there too a few times.

SillySallySingsSongs · 21/01/2019 21:04

This is not a thread about Brexit or my opinions thereof.

You brought it up. 🤦🏼‍♀️

InspectorIkmen · 21/01/2019 21:07

Feel better now SillySally? Confused

lljkk · 21/01/2019 21:08

I was the first poster to mention Brexit . Yeah well, it's Tim Martin's fault. He's been a prominent public proponent for the whole project. Brought it on himself. Not that he gives the tiniest damn what I or 16.1 million other people wanted.

I'm not a fan of John Cleese, Michael Caine, Roger Daltry or James Dyson nowadays either, since you asked.

lljkk · 21/01/2019 21:09

Tim Martin has talked a lot about the Wetherspoons strategy to look unbiased in their corporate email newsletters that addressed Brexit.

Urwotu8t · 21/01/2019 21:10

Tim started it. What with his deranged Wetherspoons manifesto beer mats.

randomchap · 21/01/2019 21:11

Yes, now they have the app you don't even need to worry about losing your seat. Better than having to queue at the bar

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 21/01/2019 21:12

Never been to one and not going to, on my own or in company.

Stuff your Brexit leaflets.

I'm happy to go to a pub on my own or with my dogs, but not this particular one.

Notquiteagandt · 21/01/2019 21:18

Going pub or bar alone is no bother to me.

Weatherspoons I wouldnt though. The ones around here seem to be pretty grim. Proper rough and full of the type of old men who you see queing outside at 8am waiting for it to open.

I ashume other wetherspoons are much nicer?

lljkk · 21/01/2019 21:20

Bloody Hell. I didn't know anything about the beermats. Here are some samples.

Yeah I have done in between shifts when I was working. Just to read my book somewhere warm and cheap. You can get cheap bottomless coffee and theres usually a corner you can hide in. Some of them are lovely inside but there are a few ropy ones I probably wouldn't want to hang out in.

MammaSchwifty · 21/01/2019 21:24

I go wherever I want on my own.

OP, you know what your spoons is like.
One of ours isn't that great. It has a lot of winos in during the day and gets packed with huge crowds in the evening. The one in the next town to me is quieter and really nice. There's often single people there having a bite to eat and a drink and reading on their phone.

The politics of it are neither here nor there for me. I understood the question to be would you go in by yourself to kill time and not to have a Brexit and that's how I answered it.

randomchap · 21/01/2019 22:04

Although his views on Brexit are somewhat disagreeable, he's proud of not avoiding tax, wetherspoons pays 0.1% of the total tax revenue in the UK. Source

Because of his views on taxation, I'll always choose a 'spoons for a hot drink during the day over any tax avoiding coffee chain.

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 21/01/2019 22:09

I went the other day (well out of hours appointment) for a work meeting as my “client” would not make an appointment at during working hours even tho they were unemployed and was faced with a wedding party...

Which weatherspoons had to call the police due to the husband beating his newly wife Shock

Personally I would go at anytime do the year unless needs absolutely must.

Bipbopbee · 21/01/2019 22:12

I'm too angry at Tim Martin (about Brexit) to set foot in a W'spoons.
Would I go to another pub or cafe by myself: sure. No problem.

Me too !
