Fed up with woman at nursery... pilots licence!

She’s taken her children more places than anyone else. She travels more than anyone else. Her children have been to more countries than anyone else. And now she’s announced she is taking her pilots licence so she can fly more than anyone else.

It’s become embarrassing now. She has a history of exaggerating (she tells stories that one of us have told her as if it happened to her iyswim) but who knows, it may be true.

But please give me strength if she’s around this week. I can’t take much more.

Take a step back, then another few steps back and wave politely and don't engage.
You're not saying you work there are you? If not get on with your business and make a run for it Grin

I had one of those and enjoyed topping her with ever more outrageous lies then when she looked sceptical I’d just laugh and say I was joking.

So, she says she’s been to Tenerife for the weekend, I reply that I went to a tiny island in the Pacific for the weekend. wasn’t that a long flight? No, our Concorde went supersonic, so only took 2 hours. But didn’t Concorde stop flying? Yes, we chartered it for the weekend, really wanted some beach time. Etc etc. You can have fun just being absurd.

MixedMaritalArts · 21/01/2019 04:00

Pretend you thought she meant captaining a tug boat down at the local docks providing safe passage for shipping - not a private plane. Make up outrageous things like the time you went to swim with dolphins and they had overbooked so you were upgraded to Orca instead - make it fun!

You once lost your Harrods credit card whilst skiing on the Alps. It was returned to the store and Al Fayed flew out to the ski resort to return it personally.
On return to UK he arranged to pick you up and took you on his private plane to go shopping in Harrods at his own expense.

She's contributing to global warming more than anyone else with all the jet fuel?

Fluffymullet · 21/01/2019 05:59

Id take what she's says with a pinch of salt unless you've seen proof. I knew someone who had similar stories which got more and more outlandish. She had a lot of issues.. ..

yakari · 21/01/2019 06:13

Smile and wave, just don't engage.

blackcat86 · 21/01/2019 06:37

Sounds like my MIL. My dad really wound her up one Xmas by stating that she had really 'seen' the country because she had only been to the tourist parts and there were no doubt areas of real poverty and deprivation next door that she turned a blind eye to. Then when she used her catch phrase that they've spent '£250k' on travelling in their lives but don't regret any of it. My dad followed with 'that's nice, we like where we live so don't feel the need to go away all the time". That really pissed her off.

CurlsLDN · 21/01/2019 06:51

Ummmm... My cousin has a pilots licence, but works a normal office job. It's perfectly possible to learn to fly a small plane just as you would a car, through a series of lessons in your own time. Lots of people do it as a hobby, you just need a private airfield nearby that offers the courses. It's expensive but not outrageously so. So I don't understand why you think it's so impossible?

Dimsumlosesum · 21/01/2019 06:59

Meh, avoid her. She can try and get her pilots license but it's a) not a cake walk, and b) very very expensive. What's she going to do, do jaunts off to France etc in a light aircraft?

tillytrotter1 · 21/01/2019 07:12

Tell her your relative's an AIr Crash Investigator who knows some horror stories about private pilots!

KC225 · 21/01/2019 07:17

How annoying. In always think I am going to play them at their own game or make fun or them but I never do. I had a neighbour who would haunt her own doorstep in order to imoartnhiw busy she was packing for her next luxury mini break. I used to smile and laugh 'Wow but nobody loves a smug person' or I would try to avoid. They always been to catch you though. Worked with a girl who would say 'Groupon?' to anyone boasting. Used to make me laugh.

ReaganSomerset · 21/01/2019 07:19

@tillytrotter1

To be fair, it does seem to be the most common way for wealthy families to die. Gets reported a lot in the news, amateur pilot crashes plane, everyone dies. I wouldn't bother, personally.

Oblomov19 · 21/01/2019 07:22

Why would this bother you. Maybe she has been to loads of countries, and is doing her pilots licence. Not unusual.

TulipsTwoLips · 21/01/2019 07:23

Surely unless she learns to pilot a jumbo her destinations won’t be all that far away!?!

BathshebaKnickerStickers · 21/01/2019 07:24

Oh I've got one of those....

Every anecdote in the world happened to her....

AND mine founded her own charity..!!!!

Yankeedoodlecandle · 21/01/2019 07:35

OMG my ex SIL was like this. Maybe it is her your talking about 😂😂 are you in Scotland by any chance

SaturdayNext · 21/01/2019 07:35

Do the head tilt and ask whether she doesn't worry about what she's doing to the planet.

YourFly · 21/01/2019 07:39

Tell her "Thats nice" then tot up all the time she is using up in your life by talking shit & bill her.

Fusioluxe · 21/01/2019 07:41

CurlsLDN OP has doesn’t “think it’s so impossible”, you made that up! She’s says it “may be true” Hmm

seanceinterrupted · 21/01/2019 07:42

But she can't have, because I've taken MY children more places than anyone else 😁

CherryPavlova · 21/01/2019 07:42

Why might she not be doing her pilots licence? People do.
You sound jealous but wanting to dismiss her as a fantasist rather than bothering to discover the truth. Talk to her as any other mother and try to be less judgemental and unkind.

One way to deal with these types is to sit back and marvel at it all... it can become quite funny. Try to see it as comedy gold about what she'll come up with next.
Whether it's true or not, it doesn't much matter, just treat it as slightly crazy fun.

I've done this with people who insist on name dropping, mentioning their prestigious brands, or awkwardly managing to squeeze in the price of something - it's effectively stealth boasting. You can either let it get to you, or you laugh it for what it really is - and that's saying it for others to overhear, because they need that validation!

anniehm · 21/01/2019 07:46

She sounds braggy, but she may be learning to fly - yes it's expensive but maybe they are very wealthy. I've travelled to unusual places because I've been fortunate so it might sound like I've been to a lot of places but I've never been to some of the common places (i get an itchy allergy from the beach so avoid those sorts of holidays)
