To like these baby names???

namechange943 · 20/01/2019 19:20

A light-hearted thread, these are the names people have called me crazy for liking but they're my guilty pleasure names!
Am I alone in all of them? Or does anyone else like any of these?
FWIW, I wouldn't be brave enough to use any, but I do love them! Blush

Boys: Basil, Clay, Humphrey, Pluto, Rubeus, Rusty, Tokyo

Girls: Asia, Bambi, Grey, Jonah, Kobie, Panda, Texas, Tig

Are they all as crazy as people make out? 😂
Also FWIW, my baby name list includes completely mainstream and traditional names too, these are the most 'out there' of a big bunch, I'm just interested to see if there's any other odd one out person who likes any from my out out there list!

Are you 15? These are not the choices of a sane adult.

Jiggins · 20/01/2019 20:37

Tbh even a hypothetical PM called Rusty Panda would do a better job than the current incumbent

Celebelly · 20/01/2019 20:38

@Jiggins That did occur to me as I was posting! Grin

IJustLostTheGame · 20/01/2019 20:40

Bambi and Texas are stripper names and Kobie will end up in prison.

SexNotJenga · 20/01/2019 20:41

I presume you're joking. Bloody awful, the lit of them. Clay? Why not Mud? Asia makes as much sense as Europe.

Jonah is a boy's name. Name a girl that and she'll be on the wrong list her entire life.

Jorgezaunders · 20/01/2019 20:43

I like a lot of them. Honestly people get so worked up about anything that's not Peter and Jane. I know people in middle age with original names like Bambi or whatever, and all I think is 'cool, you obviously had interesting parents, lucky you!'

Jorgezaunders · 20/01/2019 20:44

Lots of people thought President Barack Obama sounded ridiculous too. Said everything about their prejudices.

Cantusethatname · 20/01/2019 20:45

Basil....Fawlty
Clay.....Cassius Clay...or Wayne Rooney choice...
Humphrey....dirty old man from Lolita?
Pluto....on another planet entirely
Rubeus...just dreadful and he will be called Rubiks Cube (if he's lucky)
Tokyo...why? Are you planning to conceive there?
Asia...not as bad as the others
Bambi...70s porn star
Grey...boring and forgettable especially when her hair goes grey
Jonah...man inside a whale
Kobie...sounds like you made it up
Panda...see Bambi
Texas...see Tokyo
Tig...sounds like the Sloane Ranger nanny that Prince William had

Cookit · 20/01/2019 20:46

There are lots of random words and sounds that I think sound very nice but I wouldn’t want to use as someone’s actual name.

SemperIdem · 20/01/2019 20:48

Your girls names are just beyond. None of them are usuable.

Guineapiglet345 · 20/01/2019 20:50

all I think is 'cool, you obviously had interesting parents, lucky you!

Giving your child a weird name does not make you interesting, in the same way that giving your child a weird name does not make them interesting.

I have a friend who has given her child a very ‘interesting’ (stripper) name and I secretly hope that she grows up to be a chartered accountant or traffic warden.

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 20/01/2019 20:51

I hope you have a son and go with Basil as the least ridiculous option. Even then the poor bugger will likely get teased. And I say this as someone who likes the name but would NEVER use it! boom boom

OneStepMoreFun · 20/01/2019 21:00

I know a Clay - grown man. It suits him. I know two Humphreys, both really successful, cool good-looking men. Lolita was abused by Humbert not Humphrey btw.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 20/01/2019 21:10

All of them are bloody stupid for children.

We had a cat called Baz ( Basil) but not for a child .

If you want a stupid "Out There" name then change your own name by Deed Poll and live out your fantasy .

When people go to register their babies , does the Official writing the certificate ever question it ?

We gave our DS a very nice short name ( we chose the shortened version of it , there are several longer ones ) . If he decides to use another version, that's down to him.

goldengummybear · 20/01/2019 21:13

I thought that this was one of those threads which takes the puss out of famous people's name choices.

I think that the names are awful but you should contact Pixar with those names as they'd make good character names for future Cars sequels.

OwlBeThere · 20/01/2019 21:14

I get what you mean OP, I have names that I really like but would never actually use. Of your list I like Gray for a girl probably because I’ve always liked boyish names on girls, Dylan, Max, etc.
My list also includes things like Cheyanne, Star and Etienne which I love but would never use!

goldengummybear · 20/01/2019 21:14

I can also see some of these names working well as stripper names.

Raffleeight · 20/01/2019 21:18

I like Basil and Humphrey. I also don't think they are 'out there', maybe just a bit old fashioned but I think that is a good thing.

Raffleeight · 20/01/2019 21:21

If you like them though use them. And if you think they are too 'out there' then you can use them as a middle name.

ItStartedWithAKiss241 · 20/01/2019 21:21

Can’t you use those names as nicknames you use all the time? My dd is Tig all the time but that’s not her official name.
I also love Rupert, Winnie etc but would name Winnie short for Bronwyn... x

vampirethriller · 20/01/2019 21:22

I knew a drag queen called Bambi Dextrous years ago.

puzzledlady · 20/01/2019 21:26

Yikes - I don’t like any of those names - they fall under the ‘trying too hard to be different’ category. Come on - Bambi?!?! I personally know a Humphrey and even he hates his name - he goes by a totally different name and introduces himself as said fake name.

Nothininmenoggin · 20/01/2019 21:26

Yes you are being totally and utterly unreasonable to like or consider any of them. Life is hard enough without being lumbered with one of those names to introduce yourself byShock

Ribbonsonabox · 20/01/2019 21:27

Love Basil!!! And I like Tig if it's short for Antigone. Not so keen on the rest.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 20/01/2019 21:47

Basil the rat. Just ... no.
Jonah. The name of the most notorious jinx in Biblical history? I'm not particularly superstitious, but if my Mum had saddled me with a name like that I'd be saluting magpies for the rest of my earthly natural.
Grey sounds like John Major's Spitting Image puppet.

Sorry to be judgemental. But you did ask ...
