Is £32 too expensive...

...for Shellac nails?

I only get them done once a month but I've just noticed the price has gone up from £30 to £32. I know it's only a couple of quid but it's just taken me out of my justifiable price bracket.

I'm fairly low maintenance in other beauty areas. Don't dye my hair, wear fairly inexpensive make up, but love the 'polishedness' of having my nails done.

So if you have your nails done, how much do you pay? And would £32 (with a complementary glass of fizz) be too much for you?

Not sure if someone has suggested it (not RTFT), but that doesn't sound too bad, although shop around.

If you have a college near you, some have a hair and beauty salon if they teach hair/beauty and carry out treatments for a lot cheaper as it is giving the apprentices training. If may not be as good as an experienced therapist (depending on how long they have been training) but you could save money whilst helping someone train.

My local one doesn't do shellac, but do gel nails for £10.

Livirex · 21/01/2019 17:32

I have sns which lasts 3/4 weeks and is £25 without tips £30 with? Maybe try that wait will last longer! X

BitOutOfPractice · 21/01/2019 17:35

Depends on where you are but I think that's really expensive!

mrst3 · 21/01/2019 17:37

£20 here in Liverpool thats hands and feet

Gilld69 · 21/01/2019 17:39

i pay 15 for plain 20 for art worked shellac , she charges 25 for acrylics and 30 with artwork that includes removal

FairyFlake45 · 21/01/2019 17:41

My Mum has someone who does shellac for £10 including removal.

Veganforlife · 21/01/2019 17:44

TheOxymoron

Can I say that some therapists use brands that cost £3.99 a bottle, others use brands that are £18 a bottle.
You get what you pay for.

This ^
My previous tech used some kind of shellac and the colours were so deep and beautifully glossy. She did a fantastic job and they could last 4 weeks.
I went in Sheffield the other day, they said it was shellac, it is rubbish. The time before, also gross, like thick nasty stuff.
Both 26.
The good one was 22 but in her home. I wish I could still have her.

TigerTooth · 21/01/2019 17:47

Quite expensive area of north London - £28

lkmc01 · 21/01/2019 17:49

I just buy glue on ones and do it myself, including my cuticles. Don't use thin false nails and buy good strong nail vanish remover to get the glue off afterwards. They last 2-3 weeks depending on what I'm doing, as I garden. People often ask me where I get them done

Thisworldsnofun · 21/01/2019 17:51

Shellac is just a brand name of gel polish tho. As long as it's applied and removed correctly there's no damage done to your nails. The price seems reasonable to me. Don't forget you're not just paying for nail polish. She's had to invest in training, equipment, polishes plus pay for her overheads and public liability insurance. When you add it all up she's probably barely getting minimum wage.

Downtrod · 21/01/2019 17:53

My daughter has done the course she's mobile and does gel nail varnish for £8 including the base and top coat. She charges £15 for the full gel nails as she's just started out she needs to build a clientele up before she charges more £32 seems excessive salons around here charge around £20

TurquoiseWeekend · 21/01/2019 17:57

I wouldn't pay that. I pay £20 every 3 weeks or so for acrylics to be infilled and a new shellac colour on top of that. Usually get a cuppa too.

Kikipost · 21/01/2019 17:58

Includes removal? That’s great

Min £39 with removal here (south east v affluent town)

AlexaAmbidextra · 21/01/2019 18:04

I have gels two-weekly and pay £40.

SundayGirlB · 21/01/2019 18:04

Depends really. I live in a nice Kent town and can get it done for £22 incl. removal. Where I work in London though its £40.

Glitterbug76 · 21/01/2019 18:07

I must live in a cheap area ! They are priced £11 and £18 , they last 4 weeks.

Bluffinwithmymuffin · 21/01/2019 18:14

I pay £20 every 4 weeks for new shellac and removal of old gel; nails always last the course and have survived washing up without gloves, painting and decorating etc.

I’m in south east London, it’s a family business; staff behave as if they’re in their living room and there’s often something kicking off with a couple of the clients, which is always hilarious.... Grin

kezibear · 21/01/2019 18:14

Personally I think £2 is not a massive mark up. I would imagine her product costs have gone up lately. If she does a good job I'd stick with her.

Maztoo · 21/01/2019 18:16

Superdrug charge £25 too remove and reapply. I don't know how good Orly products are but mine don't chip and I've been pleased with the standard. I couldn't justify more than that.

SchnitzelVonCrum · 21/01/2019 18:32

That’s a lot for Shellac I think. I wouldn’t pay over £22. I’ve recently been going to a beauty school it’s £14 and the girl that’s been doing them is amazing!

WhyDontYouComeOnOver · 21/01/2019 18:35

That's loads.

£12 here for branded Shellac including all removal and work. Local salon run by local people.

Gin0clock · 21/01/2019 18:37

I’m in Herts & pay £32.00 for bio sculpture nails, removal of old gel, manicure & new polish - Doesn’t use metal instruments to remove old gel, it’s soaked & lifts, so no dril damage to nail beds etc which you can get with some of the other places

Scarriff · 21/01/2019 18:41

I had a virus in December which left me very flat. As a treat I had a very good person come to the house and did finger and toes. Cost £70 which was very expensive I thought. But it took two and a half hours and looked brilliant. With the fizz your salon is going for the treat rather than maintenance Id say. The local Vietnamese salon would have done the same job faster for £40 but would have felt different.

BowStreetStunner · 21/01/2019 18:43

I think that is a bit more expensive than most in my area although I do not get shellac I have acrylics the salons charge £25 not seen any as much as £32 try looking around having said that my nails are my one indulgence and I would not give them up unless absolutely necessary!
