Is £32 too expensive...

...for Shellac nails?

I only get them done once a month but I've just noticed the price has gone up from £30 to £32. I know it's only a couple of quid but it's just taken me out of my justifiable price bracket.

I'm fairly low maintenance in other beauty areas. Don't dye my hair, wear fairly inexpensive make up, but love the 'polishedness' of having my nails done.

So if you have your nails done, how much do you pay? And would £32 (with a complementary glass of fizz) be too much for you?

I used to pay £20-£25 but even that felt like a bit of a rip off for what it was, so I got the whole kit with four polishes for £70, and I get a few new colours each month. It's paid for itself with three new applications!

onlyhereforthefood · 20/01/2019 20:11

I pay £25 in a small town with zero competition. If I went in to the city it would be £20 tops so £32 seems a lot to me!

Angelil · 20/01/2019 20:16

@MenoMum4
Lots of things I have read suggest it weakens the nails significantly, even in the short term. (e.g. "A study out of Miami School of Medicine used ultrasound to demonstrate that that gel manicures do cause nail thinning” - www.marieclaire.com/beauty/a16686803/do-gel-manicures-ruin-your-nails/
That was also my own experience the one time I had it done.

Notso · 20/01/2019 20:19

I only have shellac done once in a blue moon as it seems to wreck my nails but at the salon I go to for wax, facials etc it's £30 for gel polish, quick file and a tea/coffee or £40 for a proper manicure and gel polish, removal is £15 on top of that.

There are a couple of Chinese nail bars that charge £15.

KimchiLaLa · 20/01/2019 20:19

There's a place near me (relatively middle class area) that is known as the "posh" place in town. They do them for £28, for a full gel mani, £23 if it's just a gel polish. They use CND only. I wouldn't pay more than that tbh. Some places in Mayfair charge £50+!!!

Bouledeneige · 20/01/2019 20:30

I pay £16 for new and £20 to take off and manicure.

Bluelady · 20/01/2019 20:31

It may weaken your nails but I've had mine done continuously for 18 years now so I'm not about to stop any time soon.

hiccupgate · 20/01/2019 20:39

Find a new salon. £32 is way more expensive than any place that I've ever been for a simple manicure, gel and soak off - £25 tops...

Meangirls36 · 20/01/2019 20:40

32 pounds is fine as long as it's top notch and uses the latest equipment.

puppy23 · 20/01/2019 20:44

If they're lovely staff, do your nails well and its a special treat for you - go for it and spoil yourself! You can always test other salons around that are cheaper and see if they're as nice but lets face it you pay for more than the nails - its the experience

GoofyIsACow · 20/01/2019 20:45

Is it extensions or just shellac?

Bigpizzalover · 20/01/2019 20:46

I pay £27 for mine, mine tend to last 3-5 weeks.

April2020mom · 20/01/2019 21:05

Do you think it’s too much? I do my nails at home to save cash.. I buy nail polish from the shops then pay a trained friend £10. This includes a cup of coffee and a snack. I’m a thrifty bird. For haircuts I drive to my local salon.

LeSquigh · 20/01/2019 21:07

I love in quite an upmarket area (but I am not upmarket!, I was just born locally!) and I pay £25 plus £5 if I need removal at a “decent” salon but if I go to the place that is run by Chinese I pay £20+£5. My nails were wrecked so I ask them not to use electric file and they are fine with that. The gels always last longer and are better done at the cheaper place but the experience at the salon is much nicer in that you get to have a conversation and the whole process is much more relaxed and “properly done”.

MenoMum4 · 20/01/2019 21:09

Ah ok - as a qualified nail tech I can testify that any form of gel polish doesn’t damage the natural nails if applied and removed correctly.

This, obviously, depends on the nail technician used (and that the gel polish wasn’t bitten/picked off) ....

quizqueen · 20/01/2019 21:16

I wouldn't pay a penny for them They look totally false and very unattractive and your own nails underneath are dead because you have killed them. How disgusting is that.. The more natural look in all aspects of beauty is so much more attractive.

Jiggins · 20/01/2019 21:17

NAIL MURDERERS! SHAME! SHAME!

Bluelady · 20/01/2019 21:37

Mine don't look false because I pay a trained technician who knows what she's doing.

Horsemenoftheaclopalypse · 20/01/2019 21:41

your own nails underneath are dead because you have killed them

You do realise nails are keratin, which is just a protein, right? Confused

AlaskanOilBaron · 20/01/2019 21:47

I'm in West London and I pay, I think, around £30 for shellac including removal and a quasi-manicure.

It's a fairly down-market not-fancy place.

Consider what you would want to earn for say, an hour's fairly skilled work plus the overhead of a shopfront.

Fluffycloudland77 · 20/01/2019 21:50

Nails are dead once they leave the matrix 🤦🏻‍♀️

Please read all Doug Schoons work & find out about nails.

TillyMint81 · 20/01/2019 21:55

I have my nails done every two weeks. They are re-filled and painted with gel for £17.
I have been going to the same place for two years. Probably depends on where you live.

Nanalisa60 · 20/01/2019 21:56

I pay £15 if she takes the old stuff off!! But when I have been naughty and picked off the old stuff then it’s only £10. Get mine done every two weeks. Find toe nails seem to last much longer get them done every two months

zenasfuck · 20/01/2019 21:58

I get mine done every 2 weeks, full manicure, all cuticle work done etc and to a very high standard, so much so that I travel 40 minutes to the appointment. I pay £20
Knowing I am getting a great job done, I couldn't justify paying any more

Racheyg · 20/01/2019 22:01

I pay £32.00 in east London for sns. If I get tips it's an extra £5.00 get them done every 2-3 weeks
