Dog fouling

Queenofthedrivensnow · 20/01/2019 11:22

I know I'm not bu I'm just curious to know what mn thinks the solution is?
I live on a lovely new build estate that borders a national trust property and an estuary. Multiple public footpaths well used by joggers, kids on bikes, dog Walkers like I'm doing right now.

This area is the worst fouling I've ever seen it's shameless. Dog bins across the estate so it's not that!!! National trust dog bins. Council dog bins. I reckon there are up to 20 bins.

I've just shooed my dog away from a dad closely supervising a little boy pottering on a verge. The dad says oh it's ok it's not the dog I'm making sure he doesn't tread in the poo!!

Going to start bothering the local council. What can I suggest?

If there are bins the dog dirt should be picked up and binned. If there are no bins the Nat Trust advises "Stick and Flick" ie don't leave it on the path. This is far better than the ludicrous situation we have where it is bagged and hung on trees where it hangs for years. More plastic bag pollution. Dog bags should be made o biodegradable material. If it was flicked off the path or better still, produced off the path it would be fine. The Dad could leave the child on the path and the Poo could be on the verge!

FilamentBabe · 20/01/2019 11:35

My local area is shocking for dog fouling. The local shops offer free bags but that still doesn't seem enough to get people to pick up after their dogs. Somebody keeps leaving dog mess at the top of our entry, which drives me insane especially when I'm juggling a pushchair, 2 year old and 5 year old out of it every morning for the school run. Will never understand why people won't pick up.

Knowivedonewrong · 20/01/2019 11:36

No idea what the answer is.
I have two dogs and we use our local country park daily.
There's not much dog poo, but like you say it's the bagged poo that people leave behind.
They've put new bins in the park, but not in the right places I would say.
I carry my dog poo until we get to the car I hate it but I have no choice, there are no bins until you get to the car park.

I think the solution would be to have council dog wardens patrolling the areas more, but I know they just don't have the resources.

Wordthe · 20/01/2019 11:38

This problem is getting worse and the tide of anger towards dogs and dog owners is rising

Queenofthedrivensnow · 20/01/2019 11:42

I buy nappy bags to pick up the poo. Smell nice and they are 11p for 150!! No excuse!!!

Boxing Day was the worst there was shit everywhere on the footpath dds were horrified

There are decent honourable dog owners who do the right thing and clear up the mess

Unfortunately there are sizeable number of people who are not prepared to do the right thing, I feel as if the drive to get people to clean up after their dogs has backfired, the arrogant 'my dog is a weapon and I'm so cool look at me' types are unable to lower themselves to do something as demeaning as stooping to scoop up the poop

Our canine friends have been our companions for millenia, we need to treat them with respect, stop breeding them into grotesque and absurd shapes and sizes, treat them properly and choose dogs that are appropriate for your lifestyle
If your lifestyle cannot accommodate a dog do the right thing and don't have one.

DreamingofItaly · 20/01/2019 11:44

You'll have a local dog warden, report it to them. The Parish Council should be able to tell you who this is. If the problem is really bad (it is where I live), they have gone out and drawn rings around poo to highlight it as well as doing patrols. Some councils can issue on the spot fines now if dog walkers don't have 2 or more poo bags with them.

I hate it when dog owners don't pick up. It gives us good dog owners a bad name and gets dogs excluded from places we should be able to take them. No one likes picking up poo but it's a necessary evil. Pick up or don't have a dog. It's that simple.

sleeplessinsomewhere · 20/01/2019 11:44

It's horrible isn't it. I was in the car park after a run yesterday and saw someone let their dogs out and mess on the grass.

I couldn't confront them. It was so shameless.

Queenofthedrivensnow · 20/01/2019 11:49

It's weird. The estate is really well maintained and looks really pretty. This seems to have no effect on the dog poo as I've said it's worse here than places I've lived before

incywincybitofa · 20/01/2019 11:57

Just to reply to the posters saying dog bins are in the wrong places it is very hard to empty poo bins in the middle of the woods or along a path that a collection van can't get down.

Its also difficult for litter pickers to pick up the small bags of poo and dispose of them.
Stick and flick or bag it up and carry it to a bin yourself

fleshmarketclose · 20/01/2019 11:58

Around here on the trails there is very little dog mess left about and the council obviously gave some thought about where bins were situated so surmise that the majority of people walking dogs out on the trails are responsible dog owners. The local park and surrounding areas are awful though even though there are plenty of bins provided. Because the play equipment is fenced off it seems people assume the rest of the park is for dogs to mess on. I don't understand the mentality tbh.

EmeraldShamrock · 20/01/2019 12:05

It drives me crazy on the school runs, dodging dog poo, wipes at the ready.
I have said it to some people, not as many as I would like too, I would probably get a punch.
Those who deliberately stare at the sky, while their dog has a poo and off they go.

There are lots of apartment blocks here, there is a small green adjacent to them, it is full of dog shit, lots of the residents use the green as their personal shit garden and don't pick it up, I imagine their dogs paws are filthy trailing in all the shit.

frankthemandoristhewoman · 20/01/2019 12:12

I never get the whole no bin thing. Where I walk my dog there are no bins...so I just carry it home and stick it in our wheelie bin there! Yes it's not great carrying a bag of poop but that's life! 🤷🏻‍♀️ Rather that than have some stuck on my shoe!

Also I've started buying scented biodegradable ones and they don't smell too bad! They cost maybe £1 more tops!

Queenofthedrivensnow · 20/01/2019 12:26

@frankthemandoristhewoman I agree - the lack of bin is no excuse!!! I often think there's a gap in the market for some kind of receptacle to put the poo bag inside so you can't smell it until you get to a bin. Like a plastic sort of small case that's so heavily scented it stops the smell completely. Someone should get on with that and go on dragons den. I would buy one!!!

Aquilla · 20/01/2019 12:39

It's awful isn't it? And it's not like you can blame a particular type - it's people from all walks of life!
From my village alone:
-teens walking dog
-joggers who aren't supervising
-Elderly people
-Yummy mummy who has her own business
-NCT types gossiping and not paying attention
-People with multiple dogs
-And lastly (and I suspect most prolific), people who walk their dogs in the dark.
My kids wear wellies everywhere now and to be honest it puts me off letting them walk to school by themselves.

Wordthe · 20/01/2019 12:40

This is just making the case for dog areas and no dog areas stronger and stronger
I would love to have dog no go zones where I could guarantee no shit left lying around
Hopefully all the nice parks and the beautiful areas can be kept dog free

Queenofthedrivensnow · 20/01/2019 12:49

@Wordthe I have no issue at all with dog free zones. I don't need to take my dog everywhere and I don't want to tread in other people's dog poo!

You have my sympathy as we experience the same on our housing development Sad

We spray jeyes fluid and a mix of lavender/vinegar/herbs to deter Angry

It is just a giant dog toilet!

We have sold our house and are moving on although a bit extreme but it is one of the reasons why we decided to move Confused

Wordthe · 20/01/2019 13:12

dogs are now synonymous with shit holes

Queenofthedrivensnow · 20/01/2019 13:59

I can't blame the developer there are loads of bins clearly visible

OP posts:
MeetJoeTurquoise · 20/01/2019 14:13

It's like that here, both estate and village. Most of us are so fed up with dodging poo. We always have extra bags when we take ours out and others have said they do too soeven if it's a case of they've run out of bags, just askanother dog walker ffs.

sleeplessinsomewhereelse · 20/01/2019 14:33

There is a receptacle on the market!

I have 2. They're called dicky bags.

Not cheap but frankly lovely.

sleeplessinsomewhereelse · 20/01/2019 14:34

www.dickybag.com

And they dispense bags

OutPinked · 20/01/2019 14:36

No idea what the solution is since the threat of fines never works (has anyone ever actually been caught and fined?!).

Have to dodge a fair amount down a footpath near DC’s school, it’s horrible.

Winnie2019 · 20/01/2019 14:43

It's not the people that you would necessarily expect that allow their dogs to foul on the pavement and don't clear it up.

I live in a "naice" area and there are three regular offenders, if they think people are watching they clear up but if they think they can get away with it they don't bother.

I called a woman out on it once as she has a habit of going into the children's play park which has a sign saying no dogs allowed let's her dog foul and walks away. When I confronted her she said that she was old and can't bend down to clear up after him. I then spotted her bending down to pick some money that someone dropped on the floor. The other two offenders are middle class mums. One is always dressed smartly in her executive business suits usually her teenage daughter will clean up but she won't bother herself with the mess. The other is a 30 something mum with a couple of preschoolers and a giant dog that she clearly can't manage.
