Dog fouling

Queenofthedrivensnow · 20/01/2019 11:22

I know I'm not bu I'm just curious to know what mn thinks the solution is?
I live on a lovely new build estate that borders a national trust property and an estuary. Multiple public footpaths well used by joggers, kids on bikes, dog Walkers like I'm doing right now.

This area is the worst fouling I've ever seen it's shameless. Dog bins across the estate so it's not that!!! National trust dog bins. Council dog bins. I reckon there are up to 20 bins.

I've just shooed my dog away from a dad closely supervising a little boy pottering on a verge. The dad says oh it's ok it's not the dog I'm making sure he doesn't tread in the poo!!

Going to start bothering the local council. What can I suggest?

We have the exact same problem in the village we live in. It’s a small, semi rural village. A lot of households have pet dogs and most people are great but the minority let the rest down. It’s everywhere and the other day someone left a big dog poo directly outside the school grounds. What the hell?!

You have to dodge it walking on the pathway to the school every day and my children have stood in it a few times as well as the pushchair wheels. My DD has mobility issues and falls over a lot and the amount of times she’s nearly fallen in dog crap. Sometimes I just drive the 1/4 mile walk to school to make life easier.

However, I do think that most dog owners are great at picking up and it’s the minority that ruin it or those with dogs off leafs who pretend they don’t see their dogs poo and walk on.

I live in Cornwall and have recently read an article that only one person has been fined in the county for not cleaning up. It doesn’t seem to be enforceable.

I have no advice but it seems to a problem everywhere because people are too lazy to pick up after their dogs.

We have a dog and it’s cleaned up without fail. It’s not pleasant but it kinda comes with the package when you get a dog!! He village shop were even handing out free bags, but surely everyone can afford poo bags??

Yinv · 20/01/2019 14:49

Our society is broken. This is unacceptable behaviour but the offenders number millions. The rest of us have no hope.

pigsDOfly · 20/01/2019 14:49

I'm another one who doesn't accept the problem is made worse by a lack of bins. I think many people are just lazy.

No bins? Pick it up and take it home with you. It's your dog's poo, it's not the responsibility of the local council, it's the dog owners responsibility.

The places I walk my dog generally have bins but when there's no bin I take it home to my bin, it's really not difficult.

A problem with many of the bins is the idiots who seeing the bin is full, as happens sometimes, then continue to pile it on top of the full bin or pile it around the bottom so you end up with a horrible stinking mess, that seems to happen more in the summer where I live.

I've noticed though, over the almost eight years I've had my dog, that not picking up is something that seems to get worse during the winter months. I often take my dog to the country park and at the moment it's cover in dog shit. It's the same every winter.

Winnie2019 · 20/01/2019 14:58

Yes that is true about it being worse in the winter as soon as the clocks go back and it gets dark the problem gets worse.

Queenofthedrivensnow · 20/01/2019 15:02

@sleeplessinsomewhereelse they are ace but quite dear.

I'm wondering whether to venture on to Facebook (Angry) and try and mobilise some residents to tackle this head on.

Not only bins but BAGS. Where I live biodegrade bags are available.

pigsDOfly · 20/01/2019 15:09

This conversation has been had on our local fb page several times and it makes no difference. Some people just don't care.

I wrote a long rant appealing to people's better nature, pointed out that it get's on children's shoes, the wheels of buggies and mobility scooters and so on and so on.

Lots of people agreed with me. Didn't make a jot of difference.

I hope you have better luck than I did.

Queenofthedrivensnow · 20/01/2019 15:11

Yy to the winter being worse though at least it rains and somewhat washes it away. In simmer it just stinks. There is a section of bridge here made out of some material that looks like a waffle - some arsehole let's their (huge by the look of the poo) dog shit continually there and the square holes are filling up with shit it's more than gross

Queenofthedrivensnow · 20/01/2019 15:11

I'm pretty sure there is a Facebook page for the estate

Dimsumlosesum · 20/01/2019 15:14

No idea about solutions. It pisses me off too. They tend to do it early in the morning (we start walking to school at 8am and there's always fresh shit along the route every single bloody day). No matter which route we take- dog shit on the pavement. I have to bring a bottle of water and wipes etc just to does it off the kids shoes/the buggy if they don't see it in time.

Babymamamama · 20/01/2019 15:18

I wish done sort of licensing system could be brought in for dogs. Quite expensive/prohibitive. In tandem with much stricter and enforced laws about leaving dogs crap lying about. It is so antisocial and I'm so sick of it.

arranbubonicplague · 20/01/2019 15:23

One of the everyday annoyances that used to distress one of my aunts when she developed cataracts was that she would tread in several lots every single day without fail (she lived on the outskirts of a park). She would end up trailing it into the lobby and lift of the block of flats in which she lived and then her own home.

Of all the inconveniences and distress associated with the cataracts, this was the one that she found humiliating.

Queenofthedrivensnow · 20/01/2019 15:25

The poo around the school perimeter is also site but I'm wondering if that's an easier problem to tackle

They look brilliant, sleeplessinsomewhereelse. Expensive but are exactly what I’m looking for. The way they explain the size differences is the best I’ve ever seen. I’ll definitely be ordering one of them and a treat bag. I look after other people’s dogs, so I’m usually running around with bags off poo and often end up bringing it home in the car. 🤢

I think the licence should be increased, but not to a stupid amount as more people will just not get one, in order to pay for more dog wardens and the park workers should also have the power to take details and fine the arses that leave it behind. I don’t want to walk in shit any more than a none dog owner.

agedknees · 20/01/2019 16:03

It’s not so hard to pick up dog poo and keep it until you get to a appropriate bin. People are just lazy, entitled twits.

sleeplessinsomewhereelse · 20/01/2019 16:27

Oh and if I don't have my dicky bag I carry it in the usual poo bag then put it on the rear windscreen wiper to bring home. This way it doesn't stink the car out.

We have weekly rants in FB all with photos. Makes no difference here Sad

KarBB · 20/01/2019 16:46

Drives me mad round where I live in london. I've heard of council initiatives where you use bright pink spray paint on them to call people out & guilt them into stopping such antisocial behaviour. I've no heard evidence to support this but could be worth a try.

Wordthe · 20/01/2019 16:50

are there any councils who have successfully reduced the problem?

GhostsToMonsoon · 20/01/2019 17:04

Many people are just so disgusting, lazy, selfish and inconsiderate. Cows, horses and other animals have died from eating poo bags.

I can't remember the last time I went on a walk when I wasn't confronted with the sight of dog poo lying unbagged on the ground, numerous dog poo bags left on the ground and dog poo bags hanging from trees and bushes. However, I have yet to catch anyone in the act of not clearing up their dog's poo, or bagging it but not taking the bag with them. I read in my local paper that someone actually got fined £75 for leaving bagged dog poo in a car park.

I wish all new dog owners would be given a Dicky Bag. I have one and it is great.

If you don't want to carry poo around, there is a very simple solution. Do not get a dog.

Wordthe · 20/01/2019 17:17

I've seen people not picking up, mostly people who look like they (and the scary looking dog) would respond very badly if I tried to point out the error of their ways

Sparklesocks · 20/01/2019 17:18

It’s so gross, IMO If you aren’t able to pick it up or hold onto the bag until you find a bin you are unfit to own a dog.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 20/01/2019 17:20

If I was in charge there'd be a doggy DNA database. All poo could be traced back to dog and would generate a big fine.

I realise that there are many practical reasons why this couldn't happen but it's an idle thought I used to have while steering two small children through a poo gauntlet on the way to school a few years back.

HisBetterHalf · 20/01/2019 17:25

too many people looking at their mobile phones instead of watching their dogs

Saucery · 20/01/2019 17:28

Baby bottle insulated holders that zip up can also be used to carry poo bags round on a walk with no bins.

Wordthe · 20/01/2019 17:32

too many people looking at their mobile phones instead of watching their dogs
yes that's one of the tactics, along with walking the dog at night and generally letting it please itself off lead so that the owner doesn't see when and where it defecates
