I'm fascinated with true crime and was having a conversation with my Grandad once. He told me that one of his brothers mates was friends with peter sutcliffe, and that he had met him a couple of times.

Interested to know if others have have had encounters or known a serial killer

Not a serial killer, but my daughter was at school with guy who murdered a friend ( whilst at school). She was good friends with the victim. She spoke to the murderer 4 hrs before it happened about a class essay. Totally shocking, no idea what lead to it.

I saw someone regularly as part of my job. At least monthly for over 3 years, sometimes I saw them every few weeks.
I then didn’t see that person for a few months.......until I saw on the news they had been arrested and sentenced for a very brutal murder. Chilling.

MrsJayy · 20/01/2019 11:28

My brother went to a boys club ran by Thomas Hamilton. He only went the once cos he didn’t like the leaders

My ,late Mil knew him through her job and volunteering.

Yes, I had numerous dealings with a seemingly respectable man who had links to law enforcement but murdered his secret lover, mutilated her body and then set her house on fire to cover his tracks. Didn't work, he was jailed for 34 years. Completely freaked me out that this man had been in my house and met my children. It was a financial motivated murder and a huge shock to everyone that knew him. I didn't know his victim though.

Aprilshowersarecomingsoon · 20/01/2019 11:30

My neighbour was a murderer.
Nowt to shout about, still creeps me out.

OwlBeThere · 20/01/2019 11:30

I know the man in prison for killing Mandy Power and her family in the late 90s. He’s a deeply unpleasant man.

2019Dancerz · 20/01/2019 11:30

Yes I have but that’s all I want to say about it!

RolyRocks · 20/01/2019 11:31

Not known personally but I did live opposite the flat from Dennis Nilson on Cranley Gardens when he was found out. Remember the police coming round to ask questions and because I was little, being ushered upstairs.

Omzlas · 20/01/2019 11:32

I once heard someone being murdered once, I didn't realise it at the time though. The flat downstairs, 1am, I woke up the next morning to police tape and a copper on my doorstep asking questions. Turns out that the daughter of the lady downstairs had come to stay at hers, the ex had turned up and killed the mother with a baseball bat because she wouldn't allow him inside to drag the younger woman away with him

Not quite the point of the thread, but still stuck with me until this day

Myusernameisunique · 20/01/2019 11:33

I went to school and was in registration class with a guy that brutally murdered his girlfriend. It wasn't long after we'd all left school actually. He was a really quiet guy kept himself to himself. Definitely never saw it coming.

RayRayBidet · 20/01/2019 11:34

At a works night out went to a salsa dance. A guy asked my friend to dance and she did. Then he joined us at the table. Seemed a nice normal bloke. Didn't come on to friend or anything.
Few months later my one of our colleagues who was a magistrate said he had been in the dock charged with murdering his wife and had been sent for trial at the crown court.
He got a life sentence.

Spikeyball · 20/01/2019 11:35

I taught someone who 10 years later murdered a member of his family. He was a very ordinary child at school.

Flowerfae · 20/01/2019 11:37

DH knew Pete Moore (he committed a lot of sex offences and murdered 4 gay men) he didn't know him that well and only knew him because he managed the cinema in town.

cricketmum84 · 20/01/2019 11:38

My DH was at school with one of the 7/7 bombers and played cricket with him as a teen.

joystir59 · 20/01/2019 11:40

I made friends with a student on a social work course, and she had been a prison warder looking after Myra Hindley. She said Myra showed no remorse.

LindaLa · 20/01/2019 11:41

My friends mum lived three doors away from the Kray brothers.

She said they were lovely, polite and ever so well dressed and as long as you weren't doing the same job as them you were fine...
a friend of hers got raped whilst walking home, they turned up at her door with flowers and asked for a description. The bloke who did it handed himself that afternoon (looking a bit battered) in and publicly apologised.

joystir59 · 20/01/2019 11:42

And I've just remembered that my nephew was taught by Sonia Sutcliffe, the Yorkshire Ripper's wife

spanieleyes · 20/01/2019 11:43

i've taught two children who went on to be killers.Shock

Oldbutstillgotit · 20/01/2019 11:47

A man my DB was fairly friendly with at school murdered his wife and the man she was having an affair with . Not condoning the affair but the H was a shit and she was planning to leave . Small country town ad her reputation was trashed as most people sided with the killer . For some reason the DC went to his parents while he served a relatively short sentence , he came out and picked up his life again. Terrible.

FaFoutis · 20/01/2019 11:47

I teach in prisons so I have known a few. There's nothing fascinating about it.

IhateBoswell · 20/01/2019 11:49

A good friend of mine worked with Colin Norris and is in total support of him, as are a lot of his colleagues.

I knew a lad who went on to become a serial rapist and killed an elderly woman in horrific circumstances. He was weird as a child too.

Yes. Worked in a training capacity and in what could be considered dangerous circumstances (knowing what I know now about him) for a summer with someone who committed a horrific murder. One of those cases where the full case was blacked out of the media.

I remember being 15 and wandering through the town centre and seeing his face on a wanted poster for the crime.

It shook me to the core.

Goandplay · 20/01/2019 12:19

I worked with a sweet boy, a bit odd but seemed sweet. Gave him lifts to and from work, my DS was in the car etc.

A few years later someone saw his ex partner on Jeremy Kyle talking about him murdering both her parents by beating them to death with a baseball bat because he was possessive and obsessive and she’d left him, gone to her parents for safety.

I still can’t connect the boy I knew to the man that did that to a family.

1stTimeMama · 20/01/2019 12:20

My manager at work was jailed for the attempted murder of his wife.

And my brother-in-law is a convicted murderer, it was a fairly high profile crime, and was sentenced to a minimum 34 years.
