Can’t believe someone would steal a child’s coat!

Just a rant really, I’m livid took kids out to a play area. had food then moved into play area. Somewhere from moving from one room to another it seems my 2 yo had her coat taken. I’d hoped I’d just left it on the 1st table but I actually went back to check as I had left dd7 shoes under the table and double checked I’d picked everything thing up. I do the usual and keep an eye on phone/purse the obvious things but never thought for one moment someone would take a child’s coat. We searched the pub and lost property but not handed in. It’s snowing but luckily we were in the car but imagine if we’d had to walk home with a 2 yo with no coat! Obviously I’d give her mine if we had to walk. I just keep saying to myself at least a child will be warm. The coat wasn’t a cheap one so this may be why it’s disappeared. Just waiting to see if cctv shows anything. I’m so gutted and can’t buy another as it’s no longer in stock. Not sure I’m upset I’ve lost her lovely coat or the fact it’s deliberately been taken!

ofcourse people steal coats. My son has had 3, yes 3 coats “go missing” at school never to be seen again.

luckiestgirl · 19/01/2019 20:46

Let’s just assume that they have a child who doesn’t have a coat and they can’t afford to buy one for them. You’d have to be desperate to steal a coat.

Talkingfrog · 19/01/2019 20:48

They didn't take a coat with them it starts to rain or snow. They tell child to find someone else's to water. Your child has no coat.

justmakemeacuppa · 19/01/2019 20:48

We were sat with the coats so whoever took it either grabbed it in the minute I took my bag and coat in the other room or they’ve actually come to the table and slyly took it. I hadn’t even put her name in it as she doesn’t go to nursery yet. New coat will have her name in massive permanent marker from now on. Annoyingly she wouldn’t have had that coat on but her dad took her out in the morning and put in on and because she fell asleep in the car I never changed it. I can buy a new one that’s not a problem but I can’t buy that one ☹️

Yeah they do, not because they're desperate although usually people who could do with a little extra money. Probably put it up on ebay

Palaver1 · 19/01/2019 20:50

Yes this happens often as well as in schools parents steal coats ..jackets hats

BornInAThunderstorm · 19/01/2019 20:53

I had a pushchair stolen at a hospital appointment years ago. Was told I had to leave it in the porch area during the appointment. When I came out it was gone.

Luckily I wasn’t parked too far away

justmakemeacuppa · 19/01/2019 20:53

If they couldn’t afford their kid a coat maybe not going out to a pub is the answer. I’ve got coats I’ve offered Coats on free cycle pages so it’s not like they can’t clothe kids these days they choose not to. They even get them delivered for free as I knew the woman that ran the group plus most the folk there were all popping out for a fag. I know cigs aren’t cheap. The price of a cheap coat. I just wish she’d been wearing her cheap £7 sale coat.

"You’d have to be desperate to steal a coat."

And what if the person they steal the coat from can't afford to buy a new one?
It's not on OP but sadly it happens My nephew has had his coat go 'missing' at school as well as his new shoes

Gotstuckwiththisname · 19/01/2019 20:55

My DD's named coat was stolen from nursery once. It was a very nice looking classic tweed one. I kicked up a massive fuss, with nursery and posting on the local FB page. I didn't let it drop for a couple of weeks. It was brought back into nursery in the end. Someone took it "by accident" - yep, because of course another child with the same unusual name had exactly the same coat Hmm.

BollocksToBrexit · 19/01/2019 20:55

YANBU Someone stole DS's shoes at soft play. Who the fuck does that? Leaves a young child to walk home with no shoes on their feet. Utter scum.

Moominfan · 19/01/2019 20:56

Some people are just awful op. My friends boys T-shirt were stolen off a park. They put it down for a minute. I'd like to think they took it out of desperation but like you said people can get kids clothes for free or cheap. Some people are just shit

LaurieMarlow · 19/01/2019 20:56

You’d have to be desperate to steal a coat.

I'm not sure that's true, I think you just have to be a prick.

DS had a gorgeous hoodie that was stolen from nursery. I'm not over it.

Mudmonster · 19/01/2019 20:56

My ds1 has his coat stolen at school. It still pisses me off 3 years later.
One of the parents I see every day has taken my child’s coat and not returned it Angry

justmakemeacuppa · 19/01/2019 20:57

Maybe I’ve been lucky as this is the first item of clothing I’ve had stolen of any value. I ummed and arr’d about buying it due to the price. I may as well have just thrown the money away.

Borninathunderstorm that's absolutely awful

MakeItRain · 19/01/2019 20:57

I had the same feeling when someone stole my dd's brand new school shoes when she had her swimming lesson. I was completely shocked that someone would rifle through our stuff and do that. I was obviously very naive too. I had to carry her quite a way to our car in the middle of winter.
Now sadly I assume anything might be stolen and try not to lose sight of anything when we're out and about. It's really upsetting but you'll just have to try to put it behind you. Flowers

CandyCreeper · 19/01/2019 21:01

I dont think its desperate either. what about the person you are stealing it from?! my son had to wear his old coat with no hood and a broke zip till i could afford another new one after his was stolen. Teachers always pass it off as being “by mistake” but how can you mistake your childs coat?! I always get ds a much bigger size and surely when they realise the “mistake” they will bring it back but not happened yet!

justmakemeacuppa · 19/01/2019 21:02

I had a coat stolen years ago and I still feel angry that someone took it. It was obviously a named jacket. I actually saw my now next door neighbor wearing it. She’s still as skanky as before and two full time wages coming into the house they bought before the boom and they still live like tramps. So someone obviously knew it was a nice expensive coat and took it. I think I’ll be upset for a while. I know it’s only a coat but I work hard for nice things it makes me sick that someone would deliberately steal a child’s coat.

Stealing from a child is the lowest of the low. Hope it turns up somehow Flowers

justmakemeacuppa · 19/01/2019 21:07

The pub says they will be in touch and I hope it does turn up but I don’t hold much hope. If it’s on cctv I’d like to post it on the local selling sight and show everyone what they are!

Some one took my granddaughters wellys from the softplay, we asked on the way out if they had been handed in.
We were just about to leave and my daughter spotted someone carrying them. When I asked if they were hers she said she's taken them because she thought they were her friends little girls. Her friend said they werent. The woman still didn't hand them over and said they had been the last people out so she'd picked them up. We were the last out as it was closing time and we'd spent ages looking for them. I had to ask her for them and she reluctantly handed them over. They weren't branded ones do no idea why she wanted them. After I walked off my family heard her saying I was rude!

KC225 · 19/01/2019 21:13

I had a child's coat taken from Gymboree in Kingston - I doubt the desperation levels there. I assumed someone had picked it up by mistake. The staff emailed everyone in our class and the class after ours but no came forward. Coat was named also never got it back. So annoying.

IHateTrains · 19/01/2019 21:14

Is it not highly likely that the coat has fallen on the floor and someone has a) seen it and assumed it's their child's coat (a grandparent looking after the children may not realise it isn't theirs) b) someone has seen said coat and thought it belonged the family next to your seat and just slung it onto their table (second family subsequently leave with their additional coat). Or am I massively niave as to the coat thieves who lay in wait at local pubs....
