Can’t believe someone would steal a child’s coat!

Just a rant really, I’m livid took kids out to a play area. had food then moved into play area. Somewhere from moving from one room to another it seems my 2 yo had her coat taken. I’d hoped I’d just left it on the 1st table but I actually went back to check as I had left dd7 shoes under the table and double checked I’d picked everything thing up. I do the usual and keep an eye on phone/purse the obvious things but never thought for one moment someone would take a child’s coat. We searched the pub and lost property but not handed in. It’s snowing but luckily we were in the car but imagine if we’d had to walk home with a 2 yo with no coat! Obviously I’d give her mine if we had to walk. I just keep saying to myself at least a child will be warm. The coat wasn’t a cheap one so this may be why it’s disappeared. Just waiting to see if cctv shows anything. I’m so gutted and can’t buy another as it’s no longer in stock. Not sure I’m upset I’ve lost her lovely coat or the fact it’s deliberately been taken!

DS is in year 10. The school cut the lock off his locker and some thieving bugger stole his pe kit out of the locker. Bag and all. His trainers were less than a month old and he hadn’t worn them as he kept having to miss pe due to his asthma.
I still haven’t replaced it and won’t because the trainers alone cost me £68 😡

TrickyKid · 19/01/2019 23:03

My ds had a good stolen from nursery. The staff suspected they knew who it was a rang all the parents (actually just her) done so if they'd accidently took it home. I reappeared a few days later stinking of fags.

BejamNostalgia · 19/01/2019 23:06

You did think you could have left it on the table. It could have been taken in error.

popehilarious · 19/01/2019 23:06

Put the name in permanent marker all along the inside of the sleeves.

Thieves are scum, bollocks are they desperate if they're in the pub

Fiddie · 19/01/2019 23:12

It'll be on eBay by now.

What make was it?

justmakemeacuppa · 19/01/2019 23:19

The coat in question, only an F&F, would buy again but they don’t sell it now. Cost about £25/£29 can’t remember exactly. May not be a lot in some people eyes but was a lot to me for a kids coat.

Can’t believe someone would steal a child’s coat!

I really liked the coat and she has a paddy if I try putting anything else on her. So hopefully she accepts it’s gone.

Like many others posting, we have had numerous items of children's clothes nicked over the years.

The first time it happened DS was two and went to a private nursery school 2 days a week. I had bought him a new winter coat which cost £22, this was over 30 years ago. The first day he wore it to the nursery it disappeared and we got a taxi, or he had to walk home 1.5 miles with no coat in cold winter weather.

All the children's coats were hung in the hallway with no security to stop people walking in off the street. The nursery owner said someone must have taken it by "mistake", but it was never returned. We were asked to leave the coats in the hall so that the kids could play outside in winter. Similar episodes throughout primary school, coats were hung in the cloakroom and simply disappeared by home time.

When DS and DD started secondary school, we were given a list of sportswear to purchase, with the school logo and told it was "essential" the kids had this stuff to represent the school in matches.
Within a short time of starting at the school, the named clothing went missing. We reported this to the school and informed them that our kids would be wearing cheap sports clothes from Asda from then on, as we could not afford to supply other people (thieving toerags) with the more expensive sports gear.

delboysskinandblister · 19/01/2019 23:22

It's a hell of a lot of money. I feel really sorry for you. Best leave this one to Karma methinks....

stitch name labels inside the coat (aswell as the obvious coat hook collar area - like the lining at the back of the coat)

CandyCreeper · 19/01/2019 23:24

That is a nice coat someone obviously had their eye on it aswell!

justmakemeacuppa · 19/01/2019 23:28

I never had this problem with my 1st daughter. I sewed her name into all her cardigans but never lost one, not that I noticed. Only thing that went missing was a £2 Aldi skort. I have a house full of every colour of permanent marker. I could kick myself for not writing her name all over it. But like I said previously she’s not started nursery so not marked anything up. Lesson learned the hard way unfortunately.

Once mine were at nursery/school, i used to write their name in marker pen on the actual coat. Not on a label, or anything that coudl be cut out, but in large letters across the inside of the coat, just under the collar.

Same with all uniform items.
I know people who turn the sleeve inside out and write the name there as well, so they can prove it is theirs.
I also sew in anmae tag, and make it like a hook. So my kids can always hang their jumper on their peg.

I think it has worked as we have never lost a coat or school jumper.

BUT I used to help out in school, and one warm day there was a huge piel of jumpers and I started handing them out to kids at home time.

Out of 29 children there were 26 jumpers on the pile.
3 were named, and one of those was unreadble.
Outside the same set of parents regularly stood and moaned about losing jumpers. Next time a was pretty blunt to parents about naming school items

The writing thing seems to work as we have never lost a

People steal anything. I had a pair of tights nicked at school while I did PE. (I know they were nicked because they were in my bag, in the changing room, and when I got back, bag had been emptied and tights gone).

tor8181 · 19/01/2019 23:57

people will steal anything tbh if they are desperate

i had my bra stolen a few years ago at butlins, police got involved as well

we were on holiday, went swimming and it was a place that did unisex/family cubicles and lockers outside,4 of us undressed jammed 4 lots of stuff in a big locker with a key and carried on swimming

we came out hours later, opened up lockers and my bra was missing,i was so confused as i know everything was locked up and being a 44L mines not hard to miss so i know it wasnt left behind in the cubicle

we had 4 mobiles, money, bank cards, car keys, room key clearly labeled with room on all untouched, but i know someone had been in there as every thing was moved around

we got dressed i went to a staff member at the desk and explained and they checked cctv which i was shocked it as its a bloody changing room

turned out a staff member went in to the locker, rummaged about and came out with the bra, locked it back up and walked away

the staff was so confused when i said what else was in there as it was untouched

someone ran security and a girl ran off and said i will get her thats lisa, security came straight away but it took 45 mins for the other girl to come back as lisa wasnt in her accommodation (as staff members stay on site,i never knew that)or anywhere on site

security told me to carry on and will contact me when they find the girl,i didnt have my hopes up but the kids thought it was hilarious that some one would steal my booby holders

a few hours later i got a call and went to the security office there was a girl sitting there sobbing, the girl that ran off to find her earlier know her sister live in the town and went to her house, lisa and the sister was there, she couldnt have been more than 18 and was holding a bag saying im so sorry please dont take it further i needed it for my sister

after calming her down it turned out her 19 y old sister was heavily pregnant and already had 2 babies under 3 and was still breastfeeding and planned on continuing with the baby and just couldn't afford maternity/breastfeeding bras

i said how did you know i would match her size?its not even a nursing bra its a underwire push them together type, she said i didnt but i could see you had a lot up top and i just chanced it shes only 2 cup sized below(so the bloody sister tried it on and was planning to keep it) so it might fit after the baby

i asked security how she got a key and they said there is a universal key for the lockers if there is a emergency as kids always lose locker keys and its easier for staff to just open it for them and this one opens them all and as it was so busy that day they didnt see her take it or put it back, she then pulled it out of her pocket

i felt so sorry for her and said its ok if your this desperate you can have it, i paid a fair bit for it but i wont take this further but security said they had to as its butlins policy to prosecute all theft and even more so if its from staff members

i went back to the room and police and a security member knocked about a hour and half later saying shes been removed from her accommodation, fired for the season(it was may at the time)and police will decide at a later date if they will take it further

i felt so sorry for her and said its no need but was told its out of my hands now

the next morning we woke up to a note under the door asking me to contact the reception desk so i went up and and in compensation we were offered another 4 days for free as mine was a isolated case as thefts from staff never happen and even guest theft are very rare ,we were doing mon-fri so had fri to tue for free,we moved out of 1 room which was silver accommodation and was given a few hours later a platinum room,it had to be worth a few hundred pounds

my partner told me to bin the bra but at £50-£60 there was no chance,i just washed it a few times

i still have that bra but its to big as i lost weight and im now a J/K

when i see it hanging up in the wardrobe i always think what happened to that girl or her sister as we still dont know what happened as we moved a few months later and changed all numbers so if they did try to contact me i would never know

When I was at school many years ago, someone stole a pair of knickers. The senior mistress was furious to think such a thing could happen, and had everyone in the hall with our bags and coats, which were all searched thoroughly, after she had ranted and raved at us for a good ten minutes or more.

Afterwards we all sniggered about the secret knicker nicker, but I don't think they ever turned up. Maybe someone was wearing them? Grin

newlyfrugal · 20/01/2019 00:00

Someone stole my daughters Tommy Hilfiger hoodie from nursery. None of her Tesco ones ever went missing. Fancy private nursery too. Car par looks like Range Rover sales lot 🤷🏻‍♀️

justmakemeacuppa · 20/01/2019 07:38

Tor8181 you did well with Butlins as the cleaner tried stealing our camera. I tor the room to pieces as I knew it had not left the room an found her hiding place (a ledge under the bed) they did sweet fa about it. That’s a whole other thread though.

People don't steal coats because they are desperate.
The majority steal coats because they want them, not needed.
I had my coat stolen 3 times in my youth.
So cold that I had to wait until the place closed and then the owner handed me the last coat that was left and I walked home and then brought it back the day after
I always wondered if people would sell them or what
It is really bad

justmakemeacuppa · 20/01/2019 08:10

I find it shocking the lengths they will go to. They had a small time frame to take it or the really put effort into not being seen

Some people are utter scum. Stealing a child's clothing (or even a baby's Shock as a PP mentioned) is awful.

As an aside OP, please don't use the phrase "having a paddy" - it's offensive to the Irish (I used to use it as it's common where I grew up and was shocked when my Irish granny told me off!).

JacquesHammer · 20/01/2019 09:17

Any primary DD had school uniform coats.

I used to sew a special button hidden in various places (not loads of buttons, one button but in a different place each time) so if it went missing it was easily found if the name label also went missing!

Bennyismydog · 20/01/2019 09:23

Some people are awful op. I once got a taxi home from the supermarket while heavily pregnant with my shopping for the week, he left it on the pavement outside the house while I brought it in but at a time. When I took some bags through to the kitchen and walked back out someone had stolen my last two bags of shopping as they were walking past my house. I lived right on a corner so it was easy to just grab them and disappear round the corner. By the time I waddled to the corner I couldn’t see anyone. I had some nappies and babygrows in the bag too as well as some bits of food Angry
I can’t belive some people are trying to get you to feel sorry for the their. I didn’t care if they couldn’t afford baby clothes, at the time mine were stolen I couldn’t either but I was the one who had to suck it up and pay twice.

Bennyismydog · 20/01/2019 09:24

*feel sorry for the theif not their!

Busybusybust · 20/01/2019 09:27

I’ve had my children”s stuff stolen from school - a prep school!

Weetabixandshreddies · 20/01/2019 09:31

My son had a brand new pair of Clarks school shoes stolen from school once and a knackered pair of shoes left in their place.

How could the child and parent not notice the difference?
