Can’t believe someone would steal a child’s coat!

Just a rant really, I’m livid took kids out to a play area. had food then moved into play area. Somewhere from moving from one room to another it seems my 2 yo had her coat taken. I’d hoped I’d just left it on the 1st table but I actually went back to check as I had left dd7 shoes under the table and double checked I’d picked everything thing up. I do the usual and keep an eye on phone/purse the obvious things but never thought for one moment someone would take a child’s coat. We searched the pub and lost property but not handed in. It’s snowing but luckily we were in the car but imagine if we’d had to walk home with a 2 yo with no coat! Obviously I’d give her mine if we had to walk. I just keep saying to myself at least a child will be warm. The coat wasn’t a cheap one so this may be why it’s disappeared. Just waiting to see if cctv shows anything. I’m so gutted and can’t buy another as it’s no longer in stock. Not sure I’m upset I’ve lost her lovely coat or the fact it’s deliberately been taken!

Well the coat is on it’s way home. The car that broke down was a new one parked on the drive and bonnet cold, kids in bed and to say she’s just got home the kids were in bed and she’d was dressed in a robe and just out of bath. That’s pretty quick unless she’s super woman.

Scummy people, so glad you got your property back

delboysskinandblister · 20/01/2019 21:27

My God you've become 'Vera'. I think you have done very well.

Lavenderee · 20/01/2019 21:30

One of my children has had two lovely warm winter coats go missing from school. And a pair of trainers that actually had their initials embroidered on the back and a boot bag with the same. Water bottles with the full name as part of the actual design, so not removable or anything. Never turned up. Not in lost property. Some people will steal whatever isn’t nailed down.

justmakemeacuppa · 20/01/2019 21:31

The coat is home safe and sound and now has her name and my phone number in permanent marker. It’s not going out of my sight now. Found out where her table was in restaurant and was no where near ours. I’ve done my homework on her and know her life history lol people really need to set their privacy better on Facebook lol I was working hard to getting that coat back lol think I need to train to be a detective I seem to be very good at it

Glad you got it back.

Years ago dds snow boots were taken from the snow club reception on a ski holiday. I'd like to be charitable and say someone took the wrong ones but there were no other ones left. Hers were lovely and pink with fake fur.

So we were stuck in a snowy ski resort with no snow boots. I went detective that night and narrowed the culprits down to one of 8 chalets. The boot rooms in all chalets had a window and I soon spotted her boots in one of the boot rooms. We got our chalet girl to break into that chalet (she knew the code) and we took them back. Definitely dds as they had her name inside in permanent marker!

Back when I was a child one of the parents at school altered the name on the school jumper of someone else’s child, to say her child’s name.

So the other child’s name was (it wasn’t but similar )

Cara Sting

And the parent altered it to

Catherine Stawking

My daughter came out of nursery one day wearing a lovely knitted gruffalo coat, it didn't look anything like her own one, not even a similar colour. My husband collected her and was none the wiser... I'm just glad he brought home the right child.
We swapped back the next day.

Highonthehill · 20/01/2019 22:31

My dd came home in a joules t shirt from nursery. I phoned them up the next day and said that my dd cheap Tesco t shirt was missing and I am sure a mum wants her dds lovely joules top back (and it was lovely) but I also knew it wasn't my property so wanted to get it back to its rightful owner.

Not sure how people can consider taking someone else's things and if not intentional not try to return it.

Notgotajarofglue · 20/01/2019 22:41

Well done! Scummy bastards. My 2 dd's coats cost over £300 each this winter, I'd be livid if they were stolen!

Yearofthemum · 20/01/2019 23:23

My children have definitely had stuff stolen. However youngest DD was forever telling me this or that was stolen st school, only for me to finally locate it in lost property, or elsewhere. She was a disorganised child.

pineapplepenthouse · 20/01/2019 23:36

My friend had her brand new UGG boots stolen from soft play once. There was a very well used pair in their place.
She never got them back.

CallMeRachel · 20/01/2019 23:50

Glad you got the coat back, just be sure to follow up with the cctv - that will be very telling indeed!

justmakemeacuppa · 20/01/2019 23:57

I would love to have seen the cctv but I wasn’t able to see it it had to be the police. The staff there were very helpful so I do wonder if they’d looked and seen something. The woman rang to tell me the pub had rung her but about half hour after they did actually ring her as they rang us straight after with her response which again didn’t fit with what was actually happening. Nothing she did added up. It seems a lot of work being a thief or maybe only when you steal from me lol

I think if it wasn’t for the cctv I wouldn’t have seen the coat again

£300! I’ve never spent even half that on a coat for me, let alone a child

IceCreamAndFrost · 21/01/2019 00:27

I don't know, I think people are way to quick to assume theft a lot of the time. With kids, everyone is busy and not thinking properly (both the kids and grown ups!) And it's so easy to pick up someone else's something or other and walk off with it.

We ended up with some socks once which aren't ours! Have no idea how we acquired them, they just appeared one day in DS's cupboard! I can only assume he must have picked them up at nursery and I didn't spot it when washing and putting away!

We've had people take home DS's bag or jumper from school a few times! Always turn up eventually! My sister-in law took my DS's jumper a couple of years ago - I only realised when I saw nephew in it a few months after it had gone missing!!! I didn't assume theft though, and the explanation (which I believe) was that she found it in amongst his stuff and wondered where it had come from, and didn't know what to do, so just let him wear it!

Let's assume sometimes when things go missing there genuinely is an innocent reason?

justmakemeacuppa · 21/01/2019 08:20

I’d gone with the fact is was an accidental pick up until I found out her table was about 4 tables from us with a glass screen also separating us. Also she has lied and made it as inconvenient at every opportunity for us to Collect the coat and only gave us her address after deleting messages after she realised the pub had her contact details she was on cctv and we’d got screen shots of her admitting she had the coat. Next step was the police. Hopefully it will scare her from stealing anyone else’s but I highly doubt it.

If your leaving coats in cars instead of taking them into restaurants, make sure you put them in the boot. Someone broke into my car and stole mine that I had left on the back seat!
