Can’t believe someone would steal a child’s coat!

Just a rant really, I’m livid took kids out to a play area. had food then moved into play area. Somewhere from moving from one room to another it seems my 2 yo had her coat taken. I’d hoped I’d just left it on the 1st table but I actually went back to check as I had left dd7 shoes under the table and double checked I’d picked everything thing up. I do the usual and keep an eye on phone/purse the obvious things but never thought for one moment someone would take a child’s coat. We searched the pub and lost property but not handed in. It’s snowing but luckily we were in the car but imagine if we’d had to walk home with a 2 yo with no coat! Obviously I’d give her mine if we had to walk. I just keep saying to myself at least a child will be warm. The coat wasn’t a cheap one so this may be why it’s disappeared. Just waiting to see if cctv shows anything. I’m so gutted and can’t buy another as it’s no longer in stock. Not sure I’m upset I’ve lost her lovely coat or the fact it’s deliberately been taken!

Could you keep an eye on eBay etc and see if someone has posted the same coat recently?

CosmicComet · 19/01/2019 21:16

I still remember 30 years ago when another girl took my coat and my mum had to carry me home from school wrapped in her coat. The girl kept wearing my coat to school and her mum insisted it was hers. In the end my mum made me steal it back! People never change, there are always some rotters and thieves.

SaucyJack · 19/01/2019 21:16

There are some proper skanks about.

Someone stole my older DD’s school jumper from school once. Labelled inside with her uncommon full name. Only got in back ages after as one of the TAs found in on the playground at lunchtime and put it on my younger DD reasonably assuming she’d been wearing her older sister’s jumper.

Iused2BanOptimist · 19/01/2019 21:18

Prepare to get thoroughly fed up when your DD starts school.

I was moaning about lost school uniform, all named with sewn in name tags and was stunned when another mother explained that some people unpick the sewn in name tags so she always sewed in a second one in a hidden place. Not sure if she confronts or just takes back the item when she spots it.

And as they get older the children don't help. Mine had big hold all's for games kit with number code padlocks on but they'd leave them unlocked and are then be annoyed when people borrowed stuff if they'd forgotten theirs. Plus they'd offer to lend stuff to friends who would then take it home and forget to return it.

I was always careful to wash and return anything that came home that didn't belong on the basis of doing as I would be done by but that seems to be a minority view.

User758172 · 19/01/2019 21:18

We’ve had so many coats and jumpers and gym kits stolen at school.

I don’t care how desperate you are. Stealing a child’s coat is low. How on earth do you know you’re not stealing from someone just as desperate as you, if not more so?

My father had a coat pinched years ago while working on a building site. He had no other coat, not one. It was -26, he was working outside all day and was admitted to hospital later that night with minor frostbite. I sincerely hope his coat was too small for the fucker who stole it.

User079641 · 19/01/2019 21:19

Some —scrote— woman tried to steal my sons coat at soft play.

I saw it on her table and asked for it back. She said it was hers. Unlucky for her his name was written in the inside label 😂

OneStepSideways · 19/01/2019 21:21

Perhaps it was taken by a parent unable to afford a warm coat for their child. Not that this excuses theft but it makes it more understandable. Perhaps they thought if you could afford to be careless with an expensive branded coat you could afford a new one.

Always keep coats and belongings in sight at softplay. I put shoes in the pram basket with a blanket over and coats in the pram with the hood pulled down.

There will always be people who can't resist stealing nice things, better to keep them out of sight if not holding them!

justmakemeacuppa · 19/01/2019 21:21

I checked under the table and had a glance around to make sure I’d got everything. I’m one of those people that checks onset the bed and draws I’ve not used when leaving hotel rooms so I know I checked but I still wonder if I did miss the coat how I did? There is a glass panel between tables and no one sat on that table but there was a rough looking family across from us with I don’t know how many feral kids they had because they were like a whirl wind in and out. I didn’t see anyone with a child of my daughters age but like other posters have said. They will probably sell it.

As a student I saved for weeks to buy a beautiful Levi denim jacket. The first night I wore it, someone took it from the student union, and left a cheap denim jacket in its place while I was dancing. It wasn’t a mistake, because my cardi was inside the jacket, and they swapped that into the cheap one. My house keys were in the pocket too.

OP, I get why you are so upset. I was gutted more than angry.

What was her reply?

Izzabellasasperella · 19/01/2019 21:22

We were at Longleat once and someone stole a soft toy leopard that we had just brought for dd. We left it on the picnic table for a minute while we went to look something. Even if a child picked it up wouldn't you as a parent say "hey where did you get that" and then bring it back? Dd was only 4 and so upset.

donttakethebiscuit · 19/01/2019 21:24

We always seem to have coats stolen at soft play and toddler club. Either that or I just keep forgetting where I’m putting them

Iwantdaffodils · 19/01/2019 21:26

You’d have to be desperate to steal a coat

Not at all. Some people are just dishonest and would steal anything if the opportunity arises. And they don't care if it's a child's either.

justmakemeacuppa · 19/01/2019 21:26

They’ve sat in wait to take it as they had about a minute to take it or they slyly grabbed it from our table.

Not wanting to be rude but children shouldn't be wearing coats in car seats, I noticed from your posts that she was asleep in the car in a coat.

Hope it turns up for you.

TheLostTargaryen · 19/01/2019 21:26

It happens more than we would like to think. My cousin couldn't believe it when she saw someone at nursery slide her son's leather jacket under their kids coats and go to leave. She of course pulled them up on it and got it back. She was told "I thought it was my son's!" Of course no other children ever came to nursery in an expensive leather jacket but somehow they had one too.
Another time a friend couldn't find her son's new shoes. The shoes are kept in separate labelled pigeon holes but someone was walking out with them. The excuse was they she thought they were her son's too. Even though he was wearing his shoes and his nursery plimsolls were in his pigeon hole. He must have worn two pairs to nursery that day.

shecamefromgreece · 19/01/2019 21:26

Dh took dd swimming once and accidentally left her shoes in the changing room while they swam only a cheap pair of sandals but someone took them.
He had to carry her barefoot to the car.
People are just horrible sometimes.

Toughtips · 19/01/2019 21:31

We've had a car seat stolen and a pair of swimming goggles

justmakemeacuppa · 19/01/2019 21:32

I keep telling myself at least the child will have a nice coat. Wouldn’t say it’s a warm coat as it’s a smart jacket than the fleece lined one I’d have put on her if I’d dressed her. I would have preferred them to steal the fleece lined one. The annoyance will come when dd refuses to wear her other coat as she has taken to only wanting to wed that one which is probably why other half put it her on.

tillytrotter1 · 19/01/2019 21:33

Unlucky for her his name was written in the inside label 😂

I used to also put a label somewhere else, inside a sleeve for example, name tags can be removed but the extra one can be a very clear indicator of ownership.

AlexaAmbidextra · 19/01/2019 21:35

Let’s just assume that they have a child who doesn’t have a coat and they can’t afford to buy one for them. You’d have to be desperate to steal a coat.

God love you for your naivety. More likely they’re just thieving scum.

CatnissEverdene · 19/01/2019 21:35

I'd put a post on some local FB selling sites saying this coat was stolen today - if you are offered one, please can you return it? And post to your friends and get them to share it. It's surprising how far the word can spread.....

And do a search on Ebay too.

Some people are utter scum.

categed · 19/01/2019 21:37

Dd1 had school cardigan, new, taken. Checked all lost property etc, small school def not there. Over the course of p1 (4-5) 4 went missing not to be found. However on the last day of term all 4 were put in her bag, all washed with the same smelling detergent and all well used. 😠 Everyone new who it was as there was only 1 girl small enough to fit them, not her fault but the fault of the nasty people who raise her. All had names in when they went missing and were returned.

In class i have often sorted out clothes ownerships between kids and parents, some are awful what they are prepred to do and lie about however what shocks me more is the amount of lost property in our school, expensive clothes never labelled or picked up.

TheLostTargaryen · 19/01/2019 21:37

Perhaps it was taken by a parent unable to afford a warm coat for their child

Possibly but perhaps then they should forgo taking their children to pubs or softplays for a while and use the tenner saved to buy a coat from sports direct or Tesco. They're not expensive. You can actually pick up a few from a charity shop for a whole tenner and even get one free from Facebook.

BoneyBackJefferson · 19/01/2019 21:40

luckiestgirl

You’d have to be desperate to steal a coat.

Some might but most no.
