Prince Philip back on the road

I'm annoyed to read that he allegedly has a brand new Range Rover bad is back on public roads without a seatbelt today.

With elderly parents I know it's difficult but he's being a fool. OP post edited by MNHQ

What are you supposed to do then? Sit there until the sun goes down with an ever increasing queue of traffic behind you?

TaMereAPoilDevantPrisu · 20/01/2019 20:50

The car she was in must have been doing a fair old lick to overturn a Freelander.

Meanwhile, the other thread that bluelady has exhorted people to read in full is full of stories of Freelanders toppling over at the drop of a hat.

TaMereAPoilDevantPrisu · 20/01/2019 20:51

Yes because turning onto a dangerous A road with no visibility is by far the better option than waiting until you can see.

NicolaStart · 20/01/2019 20:51

“They have also kept an eye on his driving 48 hrs after the accident. “

Or they have been monitoring the Press output.

The Police know they are under scrutiny here to.

In all honesty, without Royal involvement this accident is every day bread and butter for the police. Horrible though a broken wrist is, the police don’t roll out forensic investigation teams unless an accident is fatal or has resulted in life changing injuries.

From people I j ow who have caused and been the victims of this sort of accident (including my Mum) they take some witness statements and might get as far as doing someone, the chief culprit, for driving without due care and attention.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 20/01/2019 20:52

I always have sunglasses in the car

Recently the sub was so bright and low that it held traffic up at a roundabout people were driving sensibly and slowed down

They didn’t pull out and take a chance Hmm

TaMereAPoilDevantPrisu · 20/01/2019 20:54

Also, if you're young and flexible enough you can shift around in your seat until you're not being blinded.

TaMereAPoilDevantPrisu · 20/01/2019 20:56

I'm also impressed at bluelady's certitude that the weather is always identical all over East Anglia. And I say that as a native East Anglian myself. Weather by the coast is often different from further inland, for instance.

FedUpMum40 · 20/01/2019 20:57

Let's hope he doesn't kill anyone next time

God really? I’ve had one for years. Never turned it over. Must have just been lucky. Confused

I have seen cars in the news that have bumped up a big kerb etc and turned over. Anyone can do it. Grin

AlphaFemale86 · 20/01/2019 21:02

He's 97 years old, what the hell is he doing behind the wheel of a car? Ffs can't they hire someone to drive him about?
I get that he likes his independence but he has to be sensible about things too & realise he isn't getting any younger. I am utterly convinced that because he knows he will never face any real consequences he does as he pleases.

delboysskinandblister · 20/01/2019 21:02

You use your brain, eyes and ears and wait and wait until clear and proceed with caution as your driving instructor taught you....

What you do not do is turn into Dick Dastardly and think 'fuck it' I'm Prince Consort and drive like you stole it and wonder why you end up being stopped 48hrs later for not wearing a seatbelt on a road close to a junction at Sandringham.

FedUpMum40 · 20/01/2019 21:03

The queen doesn't need a driving lisence I wander if this extends to him also

tinstar · 20/01/2019 21:15

What are you supposed to do then? Sit there until the sun goes down with an ever increasing queue of traffic behind you?

Adjust your head position or move your car slightly so the sun isn't hitting you directly in the eyes.

StoneofDestiny · 20/01/2019 21:17

Why not if you will never face the consequences of your actions? He skips a £500 fine and 3 points for a 'wee chat' with the cops - because he is Prince Consort. Entitled? Yes, more ways than one.

delboysskinandblister · 20/01/2019 21:23

What was I thinking..? Grin

NotNowMrTumnus · 20/01/2019 21:28

Our local bridge (built in 1750) was destroyed by a lady in a 4x4 who claimed the “sun was in her eyes” at 8pm when she was driving north. Not speeding/drunk at all.

NicolaStart · 20/01/2019 21:28

The Queen trained as a driver and mechanic in tne war.
I have a feeling that drivers who learned in tne military during the war didn’t need to take a test afterwards.

delboysskinandblister · 20/01/2019 21:36

That's right. In any case the driving test wasn't brought in til the mid 1930s. The Prince still has to have supposed to have a licence.
Just the Queen who's exempt but that's more to do with Sovereign priviledges.

lynnepot · 20/01/2019 21:38

I've seen so many memes this weekend about his accident Grin

SaturdayNext · 20/01/2019 21:48

The police would have known by now if she was speeding by her tyre marks on the road

But they wouldn't have announced it, so you can't read anything into that.

Gth1234 · 20/01/2019 21:59

@craft 1905
"And there we have it. Peak idiocy been reached. Everyone else who is posting tripe can give up, as no one will beat this little nugget of lunacy."

Actually intended as a jocular observation, relative to the Duke's esteemed position in public life. Having said that, it's hard to see how the Kia driver could have made a serious attempt to slow down - or the Duke's land rover would not have turned somersaults. As I said, the Duke was clearly at fault for turning on to the main carriageway

Perhaps it's time dash cams became compulsory.

Gth1234 · 20/01/2019 22:02

@bluelady
"What are you supposed to do then? Sit there until the sun goes down with an ever increasing queue of traffic behind you?"

Is that serious? Of course you are. What else?

Bluelady · 20/01/2019 22:07

And you'd sit there patiently behind them for half an hour? Yes, of course you would.

delboysskinandblister · 20/01/2019 22:16

@Bluelady

Is that you Philip?

TaMereAPoilDevantPrisu · 21/01/2019 08:17

Imagine you're on a B road waiting to turn onto an A road known locally to be dangerous with lots of speeding. The sun is in your eyes. Do you:

a) adjust your sun visor and seat position, shift around a bit in your seat and see if that helps, and inch forward to see if it's safe, perhaps with an apologetic wave at the cars behind you who are also being blinded by the low sun and therefore realise why you're not flooring it?

Or:

b) think fuck it, I'm sure it'll be fine, and turn out despite not being able to see?
